Families Are Forever

Materials Needed: Temple picture, family member cutouts, envelope, story ‘A Family
Forever”, Family Dice – folded and taped shut

Opening Song: A Happy Family (Children’s Songbook p.198)

Lesson: Ask your family, "What is the most important organization on the earth?" (our
family!) President Gordon B. Hinckley stated: "I believe the family to be the basic and
most important unit of society" (Ensign, August 1992, 5).

Before we were born on this earth, we all lived together as part of a heavenly family with loving heavenly parents. Heavenly
Father has also sent us into families here are earth. He loves all the children and has told all parents to teach their children the
gospel. When we die and leave this earth, Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ want us to live again as families in heaven.
They have shown us the way for this to happen.

Show the temple picture. What is a temple? (bring out the following points: They are sacred buildings, We learn many
things in temples, Each one is called the house of the Lord, We make special covenants with Heavenly Father)

One of the special things that happens in the temple are families are sealed together forever.

Do the following object lesson: Place the family cutouts into an unsealed envelope. Say, "Someday every member of our
family will die and we will not be able to live together as a family in the next life unless we are sealed together." Shake the
envelope and allow the cut-outs to fall to the floor. Put the family cut-outs back into the envelope, lick the seal and close it.
Shake the envelope to show that none of the cut-outs will fall out. Explain that when we are sealed and keep the
commandments Heavenly Father has promised us that we can all be together forever.

We are going to learn about a family from Tonga who prepared themselves to be sealed in the temple. Read ‘A Family
Forever.’

If your family is not sealed to one another discuss ways your family can prepare themselves to one day be sealed together in
the temple. (Pray, Attend church, Live the Word of Wisdom, Pay a full tithing, Follow the prophet, Be morally clean,
etc.)

If your family has been sealed discuss some of the things all family members must do to continue to qualify for those blessings:
(Pray, Attend church, Live the Word of Wisdom, Pay a full tithing, Follow the prophet, Be morally clean, etc.)

Activity: Takes turn rolling the family dice. When it lands on a member of the family say something you can do to serve that
person. When it lands on the saying “I am part of a family” say what you love about your family.

Closing Song: Families Can Be Together Forever (Hymn 300)

Refreshments: Make microwave s’mores. Place some chocolate chips and one large marshmallow on half a graham cracker.
Heat in microwave about 15 seconds. (Watch the marshmallow expand!) Place the other graham cracker half on top.

A Family Forever
(use the corresponding pictures as you tell the story)

1. The Saints in Tonga were very happy when a temple was built in New Zealand.

2. The New Zealand Temple was two thousand miles away from Tonga. But it was the closest temple to
Tonga.

3. Many Tongan families worked hard to earn money so they could go to the New Zealand Temple.
They wanted to be sealed in the temple so their families could live together forever.

4. One Tongan family grew vegetables and made things to sell.

5. The family earned a lot of money. But they did not have enough money to get to the New Zealand
Temple and back to Tonga again.

6. They asked Heavenly Father to help them. They wanted to be sealed in the temple so they could live
together forever.

7. They decided to sell everything they had--even their farm. The family sold everything except their
clothes. Finally they had enough money to get to New Zealand and back to Tonga again.

8. The trip to New Zealand took several days. The family had to sleep on the deck of the ship because
they could not pay for rooms to sleep in.

9. When they got to New Zealand, they were very happy. Finally they could be sealed in the temple.

10. First the parents were sealed to each other. Then the children were sealed to their parents. With tears
in his eyes, the father said, "Before we came here, we had nothing. Now we have each other forever."

The following pictures are from the Beginning Course Kit CD available from the Church Distribution. I
highly recommend it for every family. There are over 55 pencil illustrated TRUE stories that are part of the
collection. There are also lessons and tips on teaching from the Scripture Readers.
