KENTUCKY THOROUGHBRED ALUMNI CLUB NEWSLETTER | MURRAY STATE UNIVERSITY

SPRING / SUMMER 2012

Alumni Club News

The alumni club has been very busy over the past year updating our chapter role. We have worked with MSU alumni relations, the international headquarters, and individual brothers to nd some our lost members. If youre in touch with any brothers who dont receive this newsletter please let us know by contacting us at KyThoroughbred Alumni@sigmapi.org. Weve also assisted the active chapter over the past two years by giving them money for rush, paying for advertisements in the MSU News, and paying $1,000 to headquarters to cover some of their debt. We wouldnt be able to do this without so many brothers being willing to pay their alumni club dues. Dues are still $25 per year. Please send checks payable to: Kentucky Thoroughbred Alumni Club c/o VP/Treasurer Brian Rickard, 609 Bailey Road, Murray, KY 42071.

LYNCH NEEDS A DONOR KIDNEY

Graham Lynch was diagnosed with a rare kidney disease called IGA Nephropathy. In the last year and a half he has gone from being a healthy working person to a fully disabled person spending about 11 hours a day on dialysis. Graham has gotten on Medicare which takes care of most of his medical expenses. His condition has somewhat improved since he started dialysis. Now he just has to start the long wait of being on the donor list to hopefully one day receive a kidney. Graham is stuck at home all the time dealing with this condition. Were sure he would like to hear from people. If you would like to contact him you can do so on Facebook or at his e-mail address kaaotiko@hotmail.com.

Its with mixed emotion that we signed a contract to sell the house on HWY 121. The sale closed on Dec. 16, 2011 to SBG Investments who are renovating the property to be their new ofces. Although the sale of the house marked the end of one era, we should all recognize that it isnt the end of Sigma Pi at Murray State. Selling the house relieved us of the burden of maintaining a too big house that was too far from campus. Additionally, with the condition the house was in it would have taken a very large investment to get it back into livable shape. The house had been rented to Phi Kappa Tau fraternity since June 2010. Rental of the property allowed us to catch up on back taxes as well as make our mortgage payments. A few details The selling price for the house was $150,000. The sale didnt involve a realtor so we saved about $10,000 on commissions and closing costs. To make the sale happen, we amended the lease with

and open to corporate matching funds. Once the fund reaches $25,000 we may begin using it for purposes ranging from scholarships to the down payment on a new house. Our balance as of February 2012 was $18,075. Contributions can be made on-line at www.sigmapiedfund.org. Remember to select the Murray State CEF in the drop down menu. If you would like to donate by check please e-mail the alumni club and we will send you a form with the address to mail it to. Once we have $25,000 in our account a board of chapter alumni will make decisions on how the money is spent.

Our Chapter Educational Fund board is composed of these alumni: Les Wright Andy Morris Paul Hetrick Larry Ruff Keith Nance Chad Hall

Through the work of James Jennings and several other brothers we have established a Chapter Educational Fund that is managed by the Sigma Pi Educational Foundation. This fund will allow us to be proactive with the needs of the chapter instead of always being reactive. Since the SPEF is a 501c3 entity, all donations made to the fund are tax deductible
