INTRODUCTION
CAD/CAM is the advance technology available in the field of Engineering used for designing and manufacturing the products with the assistance of computers and softwares. CAD part is used in almost all the branches of engineering but CAM technology is specially used in Mechanical/ Automobile/ Aeronautic/ Production engineering Computer Aided Design(CAD) involves the use of computer hardware and graphics software to generate design drawings. Modern CAD equipment enables the designer to quickly produce very accurate and realistic images of products to be manufactured. Computer Aided Manufacturing(CAM) is a system of automatically producing finished products by using computer controlled production machines. CAD and CAM work together in that the digital model generated in CAD is inputted to the CAM software package. The CAM software needs to know the physical shape of the product(CAD model) before it can compose a proper set of fabrication instructions to a production machine.

DEFINITION OF CAD/CAM.
Computer Aided Design(CAD) involves the use of computer hardware and graphics software to generate design drawings. Computer Aided Design CAD CAD is technology concerned with using computer systems to assist in the creation, modification, analysis, and optimization of a design. Any computer program that embodies computer graphics and an application program facilitating engineering functions in design process can be classified as CAD software. The most basic role of CAD is to define the geometry of design a mechanical part, a product assembly, an architectural structure, an electronic circuit, a building layout, etc. The greatest benefits of CAD systems are that they can save considerable time and reduce errors caused by otherwise having to redefine the geometry of the design from scratch every time it is needed. Computer Aided Manufacturing CAM CAM technology involves computer systems that plan, manage, and control the manufacturing operations through computer interface with the plants production resources. One of the most important areas of CAM is numerical control (NC). This is the technique of using programmed instructions to control a machine tool, which cuts, mills, grinds, punches or turns raw stock into a finished part. Another significant CAM function is in the programming of robots. Process planning is also a target of computer automation

Explain the capabilities of Cad/Cam system.

What is the importance of Cad/Cam system in manufacturing Industries?

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF CAD/CAM SYSTEM

Advantage: Software Flexibility Using CAD software enables design changes to be made rapidly. Before CAD, a particular design change would have required a draftsperson to completely redraw the design to the new specification. CAD software allows designers to tinker with designs and make small changes on the fly. It can also be used to simulate the behavior of the design in software. For example, CAD software can be used to simulate the airflow around an engine. This allows for greater flexibility in the software design process. Advantage: Design Flexibility Another term for CAM is rapid prototyping. Rapid prototyping allows designers to construct physical prototypes during the design process. These physical prototypes can be used to test various aspects of the design. For example, if the goal is to design a steel object, then a prototype can be made out of transparent acrylic. The transparency of the acrylic prototype allows designers to view the pattern of stresses and strains within the object. This allows for greater flexibility in the physical design and prototyping process. Advantage: Automatic Specification Checking Using CAD software enables the designer to automatically check if the design is within specification. CAD software also enables clients to view designs at an earlier stage in the design process than is usually the case. CAM also enables clients to check the progress of functional and semi-functional prototypes at a much earlier stage than is possible in the traditional design process.

Advantages: Can be easily erased and changed Can be zoomed in for more detailed sections Can be copied and pasted many times Depending on skill, can be neater Can be quicker Can be sent to elsewhere quickly Can be stored in a safe place Can be checked for measurements by the computer Can easily mass produce identical products Can work throughout the night so can produce product 24 hours a day

Disadvantage: Processing Power Limitations and Cost CAD software often consumes large amounts of computer processing power. This requires high-quality computer hardware that can be costly. CAM requires advanced manufacturing devices that are also very expensive. The cost of hardware is a significant disadvantage of CAD.CAM and a major barrier to the wider uptake of CAD.CAM technologies. Disadvantage: Software Complexity As CAD software advances, it becomes more flexible and adaptable. However, this comes at the cost of making the software more complex. This complexity makes it more difficult for first-time users to learn the software. Combined with the cost of training personnel in CAD.CAM technologies, this complexity represents another disadvantage of CAD.CAM.

Disadvantages: If computer problem, all data will be lost If not checked properly, the object created can go very wrong Can be very expensive Can be hard to do and handling needs training Since not manual, can be slightly irritating because if not familiar with technology, it is very hard to insure exactly what is wanted by the designer e.g. If wanted something engraved instead of cut, the line colour has to be changed into blue instead of red. Sometimes you can't do everything you want to because the tools aren't available Lots of people lost their jobs when CAD CAM originally came out
