SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT (STP)

Sewage Treatment Plant is a facility designed to receive the waste from industrial sources and to remove materials that damage water quality and compromise public health and safety when discharged into water receiving systems. It includes physical, chemical, and biological processes to remove physical, chemical and biological contaminants. Its objective is to produce an environmentally-safe fluid waste stream (or treated effluent) and a solid waste (or treated sludge) suitable for disposal or reuse (usually as farm fertilizer). There are two types of plants based on sewage treatment a) Green Belt b) Brown Belt HONDA is a Green Belt water treatment plant which uses zero discharge policy. In zero discharge policy company is responsible for wastage and treatment of water , in other words no amount of water is discharged outside the company. Also two types of sewage plants are available based on treatment i) Aerobic Digestion - Aerobic biological treatment is performed in the presence of oxygen by

aerobic microorganisms (principally bacteria) that metabolize the organic matter in the waste water, thereby producing more microorganisms and inorganic end-products (principally CO2, NH3, and H2 O). Several aerobic biological processes are used for secondary treatment differing primarily in the manner in which oxygen is supplied to the microorganisms and in the rate at which organisms metabolize the organic matter.
ii) Anaerobic Digestion - It is a bacterial process that is carried out in the absence of oxygen. One major feature of anaerobic digestion is the production of biogas (with the most useful component being methane), which can be used in generators for electricity production and/or in boilers for heating purposes. Sewage treatment generally involves three stages 1. Primary - The objective of primary treatment is the removal of settleable organic and

inorganic solids by sedimentation, and the removal of materials that will float (scum) by skimming.

2. Secondary - The objective of secondary treatment is the further treatment of the effluent

from primary treatment to remove the residual organics and suspended solids. In most cases, secondary treatment follows primary treatment and involves the removal of biodegradable dissolved and colloidal organic matter using aerobic biological treatment processes.
3. Tertiary The objective of Tertiary treatment is the improvement of color and odor of water . Treated water is sometimes disinfected chemically or physically (for example, by microfiltration) prior to discharge into irrigational purposes. such as groundwater recharge and agricultural purposes.
