Calfresh Now Accepted At All Farmers Markets

CalFresh recipients in Butte County can now use their benefits to buy fresh fruits, vegetables, seeds, and seedlings at every farmers market in the county. The federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is called CalFresh in California and it enables food insecure households to buy fresh, healthy food to feed themselves and their families. Using CalFresh at farmers markets is a great way to buy healthy food and support the local economy. This summer marks the first time that every farmers market in Butte County will have a point-of-sale (POS) device that makes redeeming CalFresh benefits easy and convenient. Farmers markets are great places to purchase healthy food and prevent hunger, says Jessica Collar, Public Health Education Specialist. Now is a great time to buy seeds and starts to grow your own food all year long! CalFresh recipients receive their benefits monthly on a Golden State Advantage Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card, which works like a debit card. A recipient who wants to purchase produce at a farmers market can take their Golden State Advantage EBT Card to the market managers POS station. The card will be swiped and tokens will be issued for the amount of money the customer wishes to spend at the market. The tokens are used like currency to shop at all eligible booths in the market. Legal residents who do not receive SSI/ SSP and have a gross monthly income under $1,180 (for one person) can apply for CalFresh. Income guidelines are set based on family or household size and go up approximately $414 per additional member. For example, the monthly income limit for a household with four people is $2,422. Adults who are not eligible based on immigration status can still apply for benefits for their children. Anyone interested can apply online at c4yourself.com. Once the application is submitted, the applicant will have an in-person or phone interview with an eligibility worker from the Department of Employment and Social Services. Health Education Specialists from Butte County Public Health are available to answer any questions and assist people through the application process. Look for the Health Education Specialists at many farmers markets and food distribution events this summer! For more information, visit Californias CalFresh website at: http://www.calfresh. ca.gov, or contact Adrienne Gilleran, a CalFresh coordinator from Butte County Public Health, at (530) 538-6765.

Part 4: Browsing at Harrods, Walking Through War, Jiving with the Jersey Boys & Dining at Cafe Rouge g
run at night. (You can see a great deal by riding busesmany have enclosed upper decks, with lovely views but since buses are slower, with many stops before arriving at your destination, theyre not my favorite, if you have a full day of sightseeing ahead of you and only a few days there.) Since London has the most expensive public transit in the world, tourists should always use a multi-ride pass (either Oyster or Travelcard). Both couples on this trip bought the Oyster cards on our first full day in London and added to them a couple of times. Ami and I loved browsing in Harrods huge Food Halls with their costumed staff, Edwardian tiled walls, 3-dimensional ceilings and gorgeous food displays. (I saw blackberries there the size of p plums!) I all the guidebooks Ive reviewed. (But Ami/I have had enough of war.) This museum covers mainly 20th century warfare WWI biplanes, walking through trench warfare (including the smells of the trenches), Montgomerys Africa campaign, the noise/stress experience of Londoners during the WWII Blitz during which 30,000 Londoners died, the Holocaust (rated one of the best exhibits in the world to tell that story), through the Cold War, Cuban Missile Crisis, Northern Ireland, wars in Iraq, and terrorism. The museum doesnt glorify war, but tells the story of war and documents the social effects of war, as much as the technology involved in fighting ita clock in the basement shows the continuing mount of war dead, now over 100 million. Dave/Ken both loved it, & wished theyd had more time to explore there. y p And theyd hoped to stop at a pub after their experience at the War Museum, but didnt have time. Ami/I had hoped to take a bus from Harrods back to our hotel neighborhood, since we werent all that far away, but the bus routes at the stop outside Harrods didnt include any of ours, and since I was short on time because Dave and I had tickets for Jersey Boys that night, to which Ami and Ken had declined, we taxied back to

The remainder of Amis and my Thursday afternoon was spent making our way to and enjoying Harrods, possibly the worlds most famous department store. (Opened for business in 1849 and moved to its current location, with its four+ acres on seven floors, in 1905). You know its a special place when the doormen look you over for backpacks (those must be checked in) and torn jeans (not allowed here, thank you). They turned away a group (6-10) of college-

aged youths, j as we were entering. d h just i We took the Tube from near the British Museum to Harrods, and maybe this is a good time to talk about public transportation in London. One of my guidebooks says that London is the best taxi city in Europecabs are everywhere, and their drivers must take an extensive test on London geography before earning a license. Also, that groups of four should usually go by taxi, rather than by Tube in terms of cost (except rush hour traffic by taxi can be slow; so, you need to take that into consideration). They also point out that tourists should never pay individual fares for Tube or buses, and when using the multiride passes, Tube rides are 1.90 Lb. or 2.50 Lb. depending on time of day, & that buses 1.30 Lb. per ride, but all bus routes do not

bought a small, beautifully packaged box of dried mango for friends here who have a very discriminating palate, and Ami bought a few items, too. Then we headed to a tea room overlooking the Food Halls, one of the nearly 30 eateries in this landmark, for a drink and good conversation. Next we walked to the center of the store where we rode the Egyptian Escalator, lined with lamps, sconces and balconies with themes of papyrus plants, pharaohs, and hieroglyphics, to the top where we viewed a huge pharaohs head. Quite a ride! While we were doing that, Dave and Ken were enjoying the Imperial War Museum, which gets high ratings in

our hotel. Dave arrived shortly thereafter announcing, We need to leave for the theater right away. (As if I didnt know that.) We were out the door in less than 8 minutes and walked to our Bayswater Tube station, and boarded. We had to transfer, but our trip was quite speedy, though the Tube was very crowded at that hour (between 5:45-6:20), and we alighted (the English use that word so often and so charmingly, I think) at Leicester Square and walked to a famous pub a few blocks away. Originally wed planned to eat before the musical, but it was 6:30 when we arrived, so, we knew wed have to settle for a quick drink and

C.W. Mickey Foster 3/1/1936-3/5/2012 A man worth missing, Mickeys family and friends are going to celebrate the lines he left, a thousand miles behind. We are having a Mickey Party at the Monday Club located at 2385 Montgomery Street, Oroville on Saturday, June 23rd at 6 p.m. Jim Halsey and his partner, Jeff Rubeck are coming to entertain as we all dance, sing and laugh. Mickey believed in living life to the fullest. Lowell Weatherford, Mickeys musical buddy will also be there singing for him. Song writer and poet, Mickey left a legacy of love and joy. We will be serving soup, sandwiches, desert and coffee/tea. If you knew Mickey and want to come, please RSVP by calling Carol Kitchen at (530) 533-6911.

then walk to the nearby theatre. I had photocopied maps out of my three guidebooks, depending on which ones I thought wed need for a given day, and those were a godsend to Dave and I when we were on the ground without Ken and Ami, who had been to London 12 times before this. On the map we used this evening, Id put an X on the pub location I wanted to visit, and an X on the Prince Edward Theatre, and Id circled the street names we needed to navigate. It served us very well and by 6:30, we were outside the French House. The French House, mentioned in two of my three guidebooks, gained its name during WWII when this was a meeting place for the French Resistance Forces. It was also frequented by the likes of Francis Bacon, Dylan Thomas, Peter OToole, and DeGaulle; so, I was anxious to eat or at least have a drink here. Thus, we entered the door where the French House sign was posted just a few inches above/to the left of the doorway, and while Dave went to the loo, I found a seat in the cellar-like room, two rooms over from the bar, cause the bar had very loud music. Since, we didnt think we had time to eat and get to our seats by 7:30, we opted for just a drink. When I mentioned the history of the French House to our waiter, he said he was sorry to burst my bubble, but the French House was next door, their entryway was not lined up with their sign. So, we had a drink in a pub next door to the French Housewed try to eat there, after Jersey Boys. Our drink was in a neat, old, cellar-like room, nonetheless. We found our way to the Prince Edward Theatre, and though I had some trouble getting into the very early scenes of Jer-

sey Boys, the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, by the interval (in the states, we call it intermission), I was enjoying it, and by the end most of the audience (we among them) was standing and singing/clapping to the music. And by the way, the performers had the Jersey accent nailed quite nicely, I dare say! When the theatre let out, we were ready to eat, and we stepped inside the French House and learned that all of the pubs must stop serving food at 10 p.m.; so, we walked on and eventually found the charming French Cafe Rouge, where we shared a few small plates, feeling very European again, and then took the Tube back to our neighborhood, arriving in our room just a few minutes past midnight.

Olive Festival, June 23

Butte County Historical Society to hold 2nd Annual Olive Festival Celebrating the Olive, on Saturday, June 23, 11:00 to 4:00 at the Ehmann Home, 1480 Lincoln Street, Oroville. What better place to have an Olive Festival, but at the House that Olives built. Freda Ehmann came to Oroville in 1898, founded the Ehmann Olive Co. and started the canning industry of the olive. She is written up in Whos Who as the Mother of the California Black Ripe Olive. Therefore, it is fitting that an Olive Festival is held in Oroville and at her home. It is expected that it will get bigger and better every year. This year it is being co-sponsored by the City of Oroville and Feather Falls Casino and Lodge. The Olive Festival is extended into the parking lot next to the Ehmann Home and will be decorated with Olive Trees and tents with Olive and Olive Oil Growers of Butte County. The event is free to the public, with live music by The Feather River Gypsies , and a Beer Garden with beer tasting by Brewmaster, Roland Allen of Feather Falls Casino Brewing Company. There will be Olive and Olive Oil Tasting and Olive Sales, Gift Drawings, Door Prizes, a Silent Auction, Gift Shop Sales of Olives and Olive gifts and an table of tasty delights, everything made with olives for $5.00 a plate and a free booklet of the recipes. There will be tours of the Ehmann Home-Admission by donation, of this lovely 1911 home, now 100 yrs old, which was built by Freda Ehmann and her son. She lived in the home with her son and daughter -in-law and two grandchildren until 1925. Then the home was the Butte County Annex for 53 years. When it was learned that the home was going to be torn down to make a parking lot, Butte County Historical Society became interested in it and it was deeded to them by the Butte County Supervisors and has been the headquarters of BCHS ever since. This Colonial Revival/ Craftsman Home is regularly open every Saturday from 11-3 and a tours are given by the Ehmann Maid, The Lady of Butte County-Alberta Tracy, for over 25 years. So come share the fun right here in Oroville. Lets celebrate the Olive at the home, the house that olives built. For info call 533-9418 or 877-7436. buttecountyhistoricalsociety.org

Why Shoppers Want OneOwner Vehicles

(NAPSI)One is the luckiest number when it comes to pre-owned carsone owner, that is. Many car buyers prefer cars that have previously had only one owner. Shoppers tend to pay more for these cars because they think they are more reliable and a better valueand they may be right. While cars with multiple owners can be a good deal, one-owner cars generally tend to have better trade-in value. Either way, when it comes to buying used cars, the more you know, the better decisions you can make. Its important to nd out all you can about the cars ownership history. The two easiest ways to do that are to get an inspection and check the Carfax Vehicle History Report. You can also look for the Carfax 1-Owner Vehicle symbol when you shop to help identify cars with only one previous owner.

Investing In Your Car Can Pay Dividends

(NAPSI)When it comes to taking care of your car, keeping to a regular maintenance schedule can be like putting money in the bank. Thats because regular maintenance is an investment of sorts. This is particularly evident when an owner sells a car. Used cars with a documented history of regular service are usually worth more, to both the buyer and the seller. Thats why, in addition to getting the maintenance done, keeping records of that work is also essential. Fortunately, a growing number of repair facilities are now reporting maintenance information to Carfax. Having this documentation appear in the vehicles history can help sellers demonstrate that they have kept to the recommended maintenance schedule. A Carfax Report can include the location of the facility that did the work and the kind of work performed on the vehicle. To learn more, visit www.carfax.com.

America Needs Ination

The Facts The U.S. Department of Energy says properly inated tires can improve fuel economy by 3.3 percent and save 1.2 billion gallons of gasoline nationally. four properly inated tires, according to a Rubber Manufacturers Association tire pressure study. Worse, at least 15 percent of vehicles were found to have at least one tire underinated by at least eight pounds per square inch (PSI). What You Can Do Heeding a few hints, however, can not only help motorists stay safe, but help them save money. Good driving habits help keep tires in optimum condition (avoid fast starts, stops, potholes and curbs). Take ve minutes a month to check all your tires. Simple, regular maintenance can help drivers save as much as 12 cents per gallon at the pump and keep tires rolling longer so they dont need to be replaced as often. To be tire smart, you need to play your PARTPressure, Alignment, Rotation and Tread. These are the key elements of proper tire care. Pressure: Check tire pressure monthly with a tire gauge and inate to vehicle manufacturers recommended pressure. Alignment: Misalignment of wheels can cause uneven and rapid tread wear. Rotation: Rotate tires every 5,000 to 8,000 miles to help you achieve more uniform wear. Tread: Advanced and unusual wear can reduce the ability of tread to grip the road in adverse conditions. Vehicle Maintenance Tips

(NAPS)Maintaining your car throughout the year is vital to ensure safety. These tips will prolong your vehicles life and may save you from costly repairs. Change the oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, depending on make and model, to keep the engine lubricated and prevent breakdown of engine parts. Inspect tires regularly to ensure they have proper air pressure, are in good condition with no puncture marks, and have a solid tread to achieve better gas mileage and avoid safety issues like hydroplaning on rainy days. Cleaning the engine, the heart of the vehicle, can protect it from dirt and grime buildup that can cause overheating. Using an engine-specic cleaning system like GUNK Original Engine Degreaser in tandem with GUNK Engine Protector will remove caked-on buildup from the road and leave a layer of protection, allowing the engine to run cooler and more efciently. Cleaned and protected engines are less susceptible to salt and grime accumulation, lessening the chances of engine troubles. For more information, visit www.gunk.com. Check hoses and belts before road trips to ensure nothing is loose, frayed or cracked, which can cause parts to snap or break. Have a mechanic check out any parts with excessive wear to determine if they need to be patched or replaced. Preventative maintenance on your vehicles engine with a trusted cleaning system will help it last longer and run more efciently.

The Mudskippers, June 23

Grab a friend and let the fun begin. The sixth annual Mudskipper Race will be held on Saturday June 23, 2012 at 9:00 A.M. at beautiful Meadowbrook Ranch located at 15424 Skyway in Magalia. Registration begins at 8:00 A.M. This years race proceeds to benefit the Playground Project at Pine Ridge School. This year the event features three race categories. Basic Course. Both partners start at the same time, one running and one biking. The course consists of two, separate loops, one biking and one running. The running loop is approximately 1.25 mile long. The biking loop is approximately 2 miles long. the two loops converge near the start/finish area, this is also where the obstacle course and transition are located. The biker will drop the bike and conquer the obstacle and start running. The runner will then approach the transition area, conquer the obstacle, and hopefully find the bike (assuming the biker is traveling faster than the runner), or wait until the biker arrives to make the transition, then start riding. The team will continue to leap frog throughout the course switching between biking and running. Each racer will need to run twice (2.5 miles) and bike twice (4 miles). There will be a different obstacle each time the racer reaches the transition zone. Obstacles may be challenges such as a balance beam, a wall, monkey bars, or a hay bale obstacle. This is a great area for spectators to view the race. To cross the finish line race teams will have to conquer the famous Mud Pit before crossing the finish line together. Advanced Course - The Advanced course is four loops of the course described above for a total of 5 running miles and 8 biking miles. Youth Course The Youth course is one loop of the Basic course for a total of 1.25 running miles and 2 biking miles for each participant ages 8-16.

Oroville Orcas Swim Team

The Oroville Orcas Swim Team hosted their first trimeet on Wednesday, June 13th. Swim teams from Gridley and Colusa competed with Oroville swimmers for a fun family event. Over 125 swimmers competed from ages 4 to 18 years old. First through sixth place ribbons were given out to all swimmers 8 years old and under. The Oroville Orcas Youth Swim Team has 55 swimmers this year from ages 4 to 18 years old. Swimmers compete in weekly fun duel meets and weekend Invitational Meets throughout Northern California area. Orcas swimming is a fun family orientated activity.

Dog Faire In Paradise

The annual Lezlie Morrow Memorial Dog Park Faire will be held on Sunday, June 24th, from 10:00 to 3:00, at the Moore Road ballpark located at 6705 Moore Road in Paradise. This is a fun event for the whole family, especially canine members, stated Dale Paul of Paradise Animal Shelter Helpers (PASH), one of the organizations sponsoring the event. Its a great way to get your dog out for some fun, meet other dog owners and their pets, and access some important services as well. Activities at the annual Dog Faire will include fly ball race demonstrations, a doggie dress-up contest with great prizes, a dog obstacle course, and a huge raffle with lots of donated prizes. To participate in the doggie dress-up contest, participants should pick up an application at the Paradise Animal Shelter, Paradise Recreation and Park District, Skyway Feed and Pet, or your local veterinary office. Vendor booths at the event will include pet supplies and services, pet photography, arts and crafts, food, and more. The event will also feature live music this year. In addition to the fun and games, dog owners will be able to get their dogs licensed, micro-chipped, and vaccinated against rabies at the event. This is a great opportunity to access several dog-related services in one spot, stated Paul. The event is an annual fundraiser for the Lezlie Morrow Memorial Dog Park and for PASH (Paradise Animal Shelter Helpers). The funds raised will be used to make improvements to the dog park, and to help pay for the spaying and neutering of animals brought to the Paradise Animal Shelter.

National Parks Offer Affordable Summer Fun Close To Home

(StatePoint) You can make history, culture, natural beauty and scientific exploration a part of your life this summer by visiting a National Park near you. The nations 397 national parks not only protect some of Americas most iconic treasures, but they also tell diverse stories and teach valuable lessons about our shared heritage. National Parks are fun and affordable tourist destinations for families, friends and even solo travelers looking for a healthy dose of exploration. School may be out for summer, but the pursuit of knowledge should never take a break and a national park is like a classroom, but way more fun. Here are some great ideas for how to learn at a national park near you: Commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War with a trip to a battlefield. Visit the childhood home of a historical figure to learn about day-to-day living in a different era. Experience the log cabin in Kentucky where Abraham Lincoln was born, or marvel through Teddy Roosevelts childhood home in New York City. Connect with your past at a place that has special meaning to your family history. Discover an array of wildlife and plant life and truly appreciate the parks biodiversity. On your visit, take a guided walk with a Park Ranger. Be sure to look up, look down and all around to make a game of spotting as many species as you can. Encourage your children to connect to the science, history and natural wonder of parks by becoming a Junior Ranger, or if you cant make it to the park, explore the WebRanger program online. Howd that boulder get there? Discover the geology of canyons, mountains and other scenic landscapes. National park visitor centers can provide you with resources to help you understand the ground below you. Challenge yourself to an outdoor adventure like camping, biking or rafting. Pick up skills like pitching a tent and cooking outdoors. National parks face many challenges, from threats to wildlife, to the need for more funding. Learn about these concerns and what you can do to help locally and nationally. Our national parks are the soul of this country, says Tom Kiernan, President of the National Parks Conservation Association. These are special places that can inspire us and connect us to nature and our shared heritage. The National Park System was created with enjoyment in mind, so plan a trip that will be fun for you and your family. The good news is that you might not need to travel far; there may be one close to home. Plan your trip at www.nps.gov/findapark. The National Park System, which covers over 83 million acres nationwide, preserves natural and historical sites, creates jobs, benefits local economies, and educates a diverse public. This summer, help protect its future by fostering the next generation of park-lovers. For more information on how you can help protect our national parks, and plan your next vacation visit www.npca.org.

Louis here...
Good news about Dilly, my girlfriend. Wow! She plays with me now! Mom puts me down on the golf course to play, and Dilly no longer snaps at me or hides in the golf cart. We run and play and have a great time! She is no longer afraid of me. I think I have worn her down with my big, brown eyes and being nice to her. We have so much fun. Austin also comes over, and now he plays with me, too! I guess when you are a rescue dog from the pound you come with a lot of baggage! Not sure what they go through, but I dont ever want to go there! Road Trip: Mom is packing things up again! I think we are off to visit someone or somewhere. First my toys then my dog food and nally they put my bed in the car! I know Im going. They didnt pack a lot of stuff, so it must be a short trip. Mom bought some new thing for the windows to keep my nails from putting holes in Dads car window sill. Nice, it gives me more traction. Must be a long trip, cause we stopped for lunch at McDonalds. Too many people so they went next door! Carls Jr. Chicken tenders. I like them. My favorite food is chicken. But I never eat when we are on the road! When I eat, I have to poop. And I never know if I can, and I wont do it on a leash. So, nothing for me til we arrive at our destination! Sure smelled good. Oh boy, we are at my sisters house! Great, she has a backyard, and I can go in and out! She also plays with me. She is kinda crazy, but I love her anyway! She lets me sleep on her couch, plays with me, feeds me and laughs at me all the time! Guess she likes my big ears and brown eyes. I am happy to be here and out of the car! I get to run in and out of the house! And I can sleep with my Mom at night, on the bed! I always sleep with her or dad when we travel so this is just the same! No laundry room for me now. Sometimes I sleep on Dads side sometimes on Moms side. But Dad moves around a lot, not so with Mom. She gets in one position and stays put! I like that! On the road again! here we go! Just a day and a half and we are on the road again? Good grief, this was a fast turnaround. Not sure what we did here, or why, but I guess we are going home again! I so enjoyed the cool weather. It was sunny, but cool! Now I think we are headed back to the oven. Oh well, Dilly and Austin and even Nikkie are there! Love my friends and miss them. What a drive home, rst there was a re on the way, trafc was stopped going the other way, then rush hour in L.A. and a car re on the freeway. Got home a little later than normal. But home sweet home it is. Now I can go poop!
