INTRODUCTION
Over 50% of the milk produced in India is Buffalo milk, and 45% is Cow milk, Indian raw milk composition is as follows: Type of milk Protein % Fat % Milk sugar % Ash % Water % Buffalo/Yak 3.60 7.40 5.50 0.80 82.70 Cow 3.50 3.70 4.90 0.70 87.00 Where as pasteurized packaged milk as specified can be divided according to fat content as follows: Type of milk Fat % (Solids-non-fat) SNF % Whole/Full cream milk 6.00 3.60 Toned/standard milk 3.00 3.50 Double toned/skimmed milk 1.50 3.50 Presently only 12% of the milk market is represented by packaged and branded pasteurized milk, valued at about Rs.8,000 crores. plastic pouches replaced the bottles. Plastic pouches made transportation and storage very convenient, besides reducing costs Milk packed in plastic pouches/bottles has a shelf life of just 2-3 days. Milk production in India is pegged at about 122 million tonnes per annum. Of this, processed milk accounts for 35 per cent, while unprocessed (which is the unorganised sector) is 65 per cent. 1.1 The Indian dairy industry is contributing significantly to the country's economy, besides improving the health standard by increasing the nutrition value of the food. The value of output from Dairy Sector increased to Rs.5,00,510 million in 1994-95 from Rs.2,75,080 million in 1990 and is expected to reach the level of Rs. 8,50,000 million by the year 2000 A.D. 1.2 India occupies first position in the world having a total bovine population of 288 million compared to the world's total bovine population of 1420 million. Need of the study

The project was an attempt to know the reasons behind low shelf life of dairy milk. Despite of being the best in the industry,and having the first mover advantage and the brand name, the like Dairy India ,Reliance , Paras, Madhusudan and others, consumers find difficult to store the milk for more than 2 days.. With the help of the responses given by the consumers and data analysis, the company will be able to understand its strengths, weakness , opportunities and threats. The survey report submitted by me will assist the company to take right decisions to increase the turnover and market share. Objective of the study The objectives of the study are the following :1. The main objective of this project is to probe the reasons for decreasing market share of Mother Dairy and to find out the measures that can be adopted to increase the sales 2. To study the distribution channel in the retail chain of Mother Dairy 3. To identify the issues related to Mother Dairy retailers and distributors 4. To get the retailers feedback from specific regions 5. To add up new retailers in the area Summer Internship Report, PGDM 09-11 | 6

6. To study Mother Dairy positioning in the mind of the consumers vis--vis competitors 7. To find out the factors that affect consumers decision to purchase milk 8. To find out short term problem in every sub-region that can be sorted out 9. Suggesting viable recommendations to be implemented in the area Mother Dairy markets approximatley 3.2 million litres of milk daily in the markets of Delhi, Mumbai, Saurashtra and Hyderabad. Mother Dairy milk has a market share of 66% in the branded sector in Delhi where it sells 2.5 million litres of milk daily and undertakes its marketing operations through around 1400 retail outlets and over 1000 exclusive outlets of Mother Dairy.

Reliance: Reliance Dairy Foods, a subsidiary of Reliance Retail, is muscling into the country's branded milk product market with a new brand that will take on established players such as Amul, Mother Dairy, Nestle The organised sector process about 1.3 crore tonnes annually while the unorganised sector processes about 2.2 crore tonnes. During the same year they established their first factory plant at Siyana (Distt. Bulandshahar) having a handling capacity of 75,000 - 1, 25,000 liters per day.
