The Americans took over this fort for almost two years after the British abandoned it following their defeat at the Battle of Lake Erie. War of 1812 Bicentennial Events Take a guided bus tour with Mackenzie Hall experts through various War of 1812 sites with a special focus on Olde Sandwich Towne. Living history re-enactments happen at the Maidstone Museum Encampment. Learn about the War of 1812 from the waters, where many stories made a splash in our history, by enjoying the Macassa Bay Cruise through the Detroit River and the mouth of Lake Erie. Windsors signature event, The Capture of Detroit, on August 25, 2012 features a march from Sandwich Towne to downtown Windsor followed by an exciting riverfront Windsor Symphony Orchestra performance that will debut new music commemorating the War of 1812.
