Title: Coin Operated Automatic Car Parking System

Abstract:

The project designed to develop a coin operated automatic car parking system to be installed in the areas like street-side parking near office areas, shopping malls, supermarkets etc. This is a fully automated car parking system could be used anywhere specially for on the road by the side of the foot-path. For design purpose it has been decided that the system will operate only for a five rupee coin and not for any other coin of same, lesser or bigger size. A novel mechanical design has been used which identifies the impact force of the object dropped from a specific height, there by operating a lever to swing to give a signal to the electronic system. The electronic system is designed to detect the presence or absence of a car in a particular spot by infrared transmitter and receiver system. For every five rupee coin dropped, there is a fixed time allotted. The time of parking allowed can be extended by dropping multiple coins. After the set time is over and if the car has not been removed from the slot, an alarm starts ringing for manual intervention. The system is very economical and estimated that each system may not cost more than Rs 1000/-

Body of the Article:

Road side parking is one of the common problem that is seen almost at all places in developed citis. To make a way out of this chaotic problem, we have configured this project which is expected to wipe out all the mishaps that take place while parking a car, as our

project is totally automatic. We have made this project very cheap keeping in mind of the current economic situation. Our project is full proof and works totally automatic, be it from opening of the gate to the departure of the car.
Parking Operation: Firstly there should be a parking slot where the car can be kept and where

this system can be installed. The slot is supposed to have a gate. There should be a switch to open the gate by making the switch ON. At first the owner of the car opens the gate of the parking slot then he places the car inside the slot. The system is such that infrared sensors will be placed at the end of the slot, which will be sensing the presence of the car. When the owner of the car parks his car then an alarm is raised indicating the proper insertion of the car in the parking slot. Then while the car is properly inserted in the slot, the gate is closed automatically. The system is designed as such there is a time interval for which the car can be kept and there is also an automatic charging scheme so that the owner of the parking slot is not deprived of its actual profits. For design purpose it has been decided that the system will operate only for a rupee five coin and not for any other coin of same, lesser or bigger size. A novel mechanical design has been used which identifies the impact force of the object dropped from a specific height, there by operating a lever to swing to give a signal to the electronic system. So keeping in mind of the time for which the owner will be placing the car in the slot, he will have to put that number of coins. There should be one display in which the number of coins inserted can be seen. For each coin inserted a counter will count from zero to fifty nine i.e. a duration of one minute (the time duration is taken one minute for demonstration purpose). Which means for a five rupee coin the owner of the car will be given a time period of one minute. This time period of one minute can be increased or decreased as per the requirement of the authority. So if the car has to be parked for five minutes then the owner should drop five five-rupee coins one by one through the drop pipe which has got one lever to activate the circuit. This is the total parking operation as mentioned above.

Count-Up Sequence: For each coin dropped the coin counter will count up one, and when the

allotted time period allotted for each coin is over, the coin counter will count one down. This will continue and will count perfectly for each and every coin dropped.
Taking Out Operation Of The Car: While taking out the car from the parking slot there may be

two case, firstly when the owner comes within the allotted time to take out his car, secondly if the owner of the car comes after his allotted time. We have solved this problem efficiently. Firstly when the owner comes within the allotted time then he can take out the car by opening the gate of the parking slot by applying the switch provided outside the parking slot. In the second case when the owner comes late to take out his car then he cannot take out his car by opening the gate using the switch as the switch is disabled by the system .The owner now has to face penalty as he blocked the parking slot by keeping his car for more than the allotted time. Thus the owner has to drop again a coins of five-rupee to enable the circuit and then he can take out his car.

A further planning can be implemented in which the counter counting the number of coins will count down after becoming zero, if the owner fails to appear in the scheduled time. Thus the owner will have to drop coins one by one to make the counter zero again to enable the circuit and then he can take out the car. In this way the company can make money for the

extra time the owner has parked the car and all this is done automatically through the system and no individual is required to keep track of it. Thus when the time is over then an alarm is raised indicating that the time allotted for the parking is over and the owner can take out his car.

Innovative Thought Of The Project:

The innovation of the project lies in the mechanism where we have made the whole circuitry work by the application of a lever under the coin drop pipe. When the coin falls from a certain height it gains some potential energy which is ultimately transferred into the lever to make the whole circuitry work.

Materials And Methods:

The total circuitry is implemented using simple digital ICs like 7408, 7432, 7404 etc. For the counting operation counter ICs like IC7490 can be implemented. The whole circuit is designed using basic digital ICs which are of nominal cost. As for the methods are concerned, we have implemented simple digital logics of the gates to make the entire circuitry work according to the logic thought. Simple chip pinout design is merged properly with the digital logic keeping in mind of its working conditions.

Results And Discussion:

The circuit works if all the conditions of its constructions are satisfied and made properly. The system is fully automatic be it from the parking of the car to the disposal of the car. Thus this system is totally automatic and is economic as the parking slot owners also get the money that is been charged to the owner of the car. Car parking is a sector of the economic

cycle, today all the parking complexes are fully manual controlled, which causes a delay in parking and removing a car. Also the customer could be cheated by the parking administrator. The authority could also be deprived of the actual profits. Our automatic system will overcome the above mentioned difficulties. The customer will be charged as per usage time. The number of parking slots can be increased as per the requirement of the authority implementing this design. The sensors will be placed for each and every parking slot made. The gate operation will also be separate for each and every slot. But the clocking can be made central which will be controlling all the slots. Again the slots readings can be stored in the computer for the further processing and operations.
Cost Of The Project:

Total cost

IC 555timer 1pc Rs.7/9. 7 segment display 3pc Rs.36/10. IR Sensor 1pair Rs.16/11. Resistance 7pc Rs.2/12. Capacitor 1pc Rs.1/13. Vero board 2pc Rs.60/14. Al plate (8*3*1/2) 1pc Rs.150/15. Al rod (6) 1pc Rs.20/16. PVC pipe (4) 1pc Rs.50/17. Iron channel (6*3*2) Rs.120/18. Stand & clamp Rs.30/Conclusions:

The system is a very cost effective system, costing less than 1000Rs. per unit. The cost can further be reduced using centralized clock system and removing the optional display part. The system is faultless and requires only 5v DC supply which is very less as compared to the benefit that is obtained from the project. If there is a fault then that fault could be rectified by changing that particular chip without disturbing the whole circuitry.
