The objectives of this course are to: 1. To demonstrate and introduce the concepts of the basic complex analysis.

Course Objectives

2. To provide students with the fundamental approaches to solve problems that arises in nature using complex analysis. 3. To introduce students to different boundary value problems. 4. To present the power of partial differential equations in modeling engineering problems. 5. To develop a clear understanding of the techniques for solving partial differential equations. Learning Outcomes Upon completing this course, students should be able to: 1. Evaluate the limits, the derivatives, the integrals and contour integrals of complex functions. 2. Use Residue to evaluate proper and improper integrals. 3. Solve Bessels and Legendres equations by using power series method. 4. Find Fourier series for a periodic function. 5. Solve boundary-value problem by using Sturm-Liouville method. 6. Solve Heat equation, wave equation, and Laplaces equation in different systems of coordinates. 7. Analyze problems with multiple stages and components then solve them systematically. Content Outlines Weeks Topics 1-2 Complex Functions and Their Derivatives: Review, Region of the complex plane, complex functions, limits and continuity, derivatives of complex functions (Cauchy-Riemann equations), polar coordinates, harmonic functions. 2-5 Elementary Complex Functions: Linear function, power function, linear rational function, exponential function, trigonometric functions, hyperbolic functions, logarithmic functions, complex powers. 6-7 Complex Integrals: Indefinite integral and antiderivative, curve and line integrals, contour integrals, independent of the path, Cauchy integral formulas, bounds for moduli of analytic functions 8-9 Residue theory: Cauchys residue theory, evaluation of definite integrals, improper integrals. Mid-term Exam, 03/11/2011 05.00 pm---07.00 pm 10-11 Orthogonal Functions and Fourier Series: Orthogonal functions, Fourier series, Fourier cosine and sine series, Sturm- Liouville problem, Bessels equation, Bessels and Legendres series.

Partial differential equations and boundary value problem in rectangular coordinates: Introduction, classical boundary value problem (Heat equation, wave equation, Laplaces equation), solution of Heat, Wave and Laplaces equations by separation of variables, boundary value problems using orthogonal series expansions, boundary value problems involving Fourier series in two variables. 14-15 Boundary value problems in other coordinate systems: Problem involving polar coordinates, problem in polar and cylindrical coordinates (Bessel function), problems in spherical coordinates (Legender polynomials). 16 Integral Transform Method: Error function, application of Lapalce Transform, Fourier integral, Fourier Transform. 17 Numerical Solutions of Partial differential equations: Method for elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic partial differential equations.
