I understand how to set up the VPN on the Windows 7 machine, but where do I find the information to connect now from outside the network, i.e., L2TP or PPTP, Server IP, etc...

Is there any ports i need to open on my dlink router? Also, what about the Windows 7 firewall? Do i need to disable the windows firewall?

As you create a VPN network on your system it is possible that some third party security application or your firewall is blocking the connection. For this you might need to disable the same for some time and check back. Disable the firewall and other things for ports assigning is done by Windows itself. You can also add the connection under exception list.
