Story 2 Part 1 In this story, Kate is surfing in New Zealand with some new friends. They tell her stories about the dangerous things that have happened to them. Kate doesnt have a story to tell, because nothing dangerous has happened to her. *************************************************** Kate is on the Auckland Isthmus with Terry, Theo, and Thelma. After a fantastic day of surfing, they all sit on the beach to eat a delicious barbeque of burgers, sausages and huge marinated prawns. The three friends watch the sun set into the sea. They all feel tired and happy. Terry, with his mouth full of sausage, starts to talk. This reminds me of Cape Town in South Africa, last February. The coastline is amazing there, but its quite rocky and dangerous. There I am, surfing. I wait and wait for a bigger wave, and I dont realise that the sea is pulling me further and further from the beach. Suddenly, the wind gets stronger, and I know Im in danger. I lie on my surfboard and try to reach the beach, but Im not strong enough. I start to panic. The Atlantic Ocean isnt as big as the Pacific, but it is still enormous. Im hungry, thirsty, and really sunburnt. Finally, the current takes me to Robben Island, and I get a ferry back to Cape Town! On the ferry, people laugh at me because I am as red as a tomato. I dont mind, as Im happy to be alive. A terrifying day! Everyone tells Terry that he is lucky to still be alive. The sun has set, so the three friends light a fire on the beach. The night sky is clear. There seem to be a million twinkling stars in the sky, and a beautiful, golden full moon is rising. The air is cold, but the fire keeps them warm. Kate thinks: Im so lucky. I often wait in the sea for the perfect wave, just like Terry, but Ive never been in real danger. I hope something like that never happens to me. If it does, I dont think I will be brave enough to go back in the sea.... Kate moves a bit closer to the fire. Kate reaches into her bag and pulls out some bananas and chocolate. Her friends are delighted, as they know how delicious chocolate bananas roasted on the fire taste. Ouch! cries Thelma...

Story 2 Part 2 Ouch! cries Thelma, as she bites into her dessert. Thats the hottest banana Ive ever eaten! Ive burnt my tongue! Theo, Thelma and Kate are much more careful with their chocolate bananas. I was almost burnt alive once. Theo starts to tell his story. Luckily, I managed to escape... I am in Sicily with my father. We decide to climb Stromboli. We are part of a group, with a guide, who leads us to the top of the volcano. It is the longest climb Ive ever done four and a half hours. We arrive at the top just as it is getting dark, and everyone is very tired. The air gets cooler, but when we sit on the ash-covered mountain, it is warm. Suddenly, we see thin plumes of smoke rising up from lots of vents nearby, and then there is an eruption. It is quite small, but Dad and I are really scared! Lava is flowing out of a vent. The guide turns to us and says, Dont worry, we are safe here. I am glad that you are seeing this eruption, not everyone is so lucky. The whole group panics. It is the nearest I have ever been to death, so I ask the guide to take us back down to the village. The journey down, in the dark, feels much shorter. We are almost running! Now I realise that running down was much more dangerous than staying by the volcano, but I just wanted to get back down to the hotel! Everyone laughs, because this is typical Theo. He always has the smallest problems, and they always become the biggest problems when he talks about them. The fire starts to die down. Everyone is tired and they go to bed. Kate is in her bed, and she thinks that she is the luckiest girl alive, as she loves adventure but she has never been in any real danger. Just then, her bed starts to shake...

Story 2 Part 3 Just then, Kates bed starts to shake, and she hears the loudest rumble she has ever heard. The windows shake, her rucksack falls out of the wardrobe, and she jumps out of bed. The floor is shaking under her feet, and she realises that this is an earthquake. Her heart is beating very fast as she runs into the corridor. She runs into Thelma, who tells her to lie under a table, or a bed, quickly. Kate hides under a table in the dining room. The tremor only lasts half a minute, but these are the longest 30 seconds of Kates life. She wonders how near to the epicentre the hotel is, and whether the fault is at sea. If it is, then there will be a tsunami, which will be even worse than the earthquake. When the floor stops shaking, Kate and the other guests crawl out from under the tables in the dining room. They turn to Tom, who works at the hotel. He is completely calm. He is checking the tsunami warning system on the computer, and he tells everyone that they will be safe. This earthquake was only 5 on the Richter Scale, he says. We get earthquakes like this quite often. Its really nothing to worry about. I was so scared, Kate tells him. This is my first earthquake. Im glad Im still alive. You have probably been in one before, replies Tom. We have them almost every day here in New Zealand, but theyre normally smaller than todays earthquake, so you dont notice them. Kate says goodbye to Tom and goes to her room. She tries to sleep, but she cant. I wonder what Bob will say, when I tell him, she thinks to herself, I will pretend that I wasnt scared when the ground was shaking, but he knows me well, so Im not sure he will believe me...
