What I enjoy most about marketing is that its not just about numbers or selling something its about the connections you make with people. Why do they want to buy this product? Why do they want to support this company? Its your job as a marketer to connect the product with the people who consume it.

As the academic director of the Zarb Schools Martin B. Greenberg Trading Room, I am proud that Hofstra students receive hands-on experience with world-class resources such as the Bloomberg Professional terminals. I am excited to teach in the trading room, and our students are extremely motivated to take courses in this unique learning facility. The skills they learn in the trading room make them even more marketable in the ever-changing world of finance.

I love teaching at Hofstra because the students are smart and very spirited. Theyre not afraid to take risks, intellectually or personally, and that means I can take risks too. I can be very creative in the way I teach, which is really liberating and a lot of fun.

I would like to focus on international relations, working to formulate foreign policies for elected officials, ideally at the U.S. Department of State.

A brilliant college president once told me, Colleges and universities have qualities you can almost sum up in human personality terms. Its true. Hofstra Universitys more than 500 full-time faculty members are noted scholars, writers, scientists, artists and professionals but above all, they are inspiring teachers. Among them you will find National Endowment for the Humanities Fellows, Guggenheim Fellows, an Emmy Award winner, major grant recipients and dozens of respected textbook authors. Our professors, more than 91 percent of whom hold the highest degree in their fields, are acknowledged leaders in a wide variety of arenas, and they share a passion for passing on what they have learned and being the agent of your enlightenment. And we make certain you have every opportunity to establish life-changing, sometimes lifelong relationships with these extraordinary men and women. In fact, one thing that distinguishes Hofstra from so many other colleges is that virtually all of our faculty teach undergraduates, and many of our most eminent faculty make it a point to teach our newest students. Whats more, at Hofstra all classes are led by faculty members, not teaching assistants. With small average class sizes (48 percent of our classes have fewer than 20 students), youll be in an environment that encourages a free exchange of ideas. You wont find our professors only in their classrooms, either. They take pride in being accessible, during and after office hours. They welcome your questions, and can offer not only the academic knowledge of an expert but also the life experiences of one who has labored in the field you wish to explore. They will work with you, inspire you, and teach you to stay hungry for knowledge and constantly quest for self-improvement. At Hofstra, thats what we call teaching and a great way to find your edge.

Together, each years class follows a common reading list, attends class-wide lectures, and actively explores topics in depth through small group discussions with some of Hofstras most highly regarded faculty. In fact, Honors College faculty members are specifically selected for their ability to fire your imagination and stir you to achieve more than you ever thought possible. Honors College graduates have gone on to outstanding graduate programs such as the law schools at Harvard, Columbia, NYU, University of Pennsylvania, and Georgetown, and to Yale University's Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program.

Major: Global Studies Minors: Dance, Photography Hometown: Port Clinton, Ohio I came to college to learn so I chose global studies because it interests me; photography and dance, the same. Hofstras Honors College takes advantage of its relatively close proximity to New York City, and its given me access to museums, shows, and countless cultural and dance opportunities that an honors college elsewhere might not be able to offer. That, plus the international study opportunities Ive taken, has let me accrue a lot of life experience in a short amount of time, so I do not worry over being able to find a position that I am passionate about when I am ready.

Its about the conversation. Honors College is an invitation into a conversation that reaches back to the beginnings of human history and extends to the very specific questions, problems, hopes, and dreams students bring to our classrooms and offices.

We want our new students to feel comfortable with New York City right away. So, each fall term, we offer faculty-organized, course-related trips. For example, this fall the politics and history cluster traveled to Ellis Island, the geology seminar climbed over rocks in Central Park, the business cluster visited Bloomberg Media, the engineering cluster traveled to Underwriters Laboratory, a seminar studying the problem of child labor worldwide visited UNICEF and Human Rights Watch, the pre-med cluster explored the wonder of the human form at Bodies: The Exhibition, and the labor studies seminar enjoyed a walking tour of Chinatown. We want our students to think of New York City as one of our classrooms albeit a rather large one. These trips are one way to introduce you to all the city has to offer.

Class of 2011

Andrew Schuetz

Major: Television Production Activity: Hofstra Association of Black Journalists Hometown: Medford, New York
When Jordan Gee arrived at Hofstra, he expected it to be a great next step toward a career in television production. What he didnt expect was a world of new friends and a positive, collaborative educational atmosphere. Before coming to Hofstra, Jordan had already turned a successful internship into a part-time job at MSG Network, and working as a production assistant on telecasts of New York Islanders hockey games keeps him busy during the long hockey season. But that hasnt kept him from plugging into the Hofstra scene. At Welcome Week, the students and staff really went out of their way to make sure everyone felt like part of the community. And thats the way its been in all my classes. The faculty, the students everybody wants to help each other however they can.

Major: Marketing Activity: Hofstra Marketing Association Hometown: Red Lion, Pennsylvania
Jill Reinholt chose Hofstra University for its close proximity to New York City and because of the feeling she got when she first stepped foot on campus. I did some surveys online, and Hofstra kept showing up, so I visited and I loved it. It was by far the most welcoming university. In Jills opinion, Hofstra has lived up to its early promise. As a first-year Honors College student enrolled in Culture & Expression, she had the chance to get to know a small group of students and teachers intimately as they explored the connections among disciplines. The friends Ive met, the administrators everyone has just been great. But Jill reserves special praise for her teachers. Ive been amazed by the professors here. I came in with the expectation that they would be more interested in their research. that students wouldnt be their No. 1 priority. But that hasnt been the case. Theyre right there with us, and theyre willing to help.

Major: Entrepreneurship Activity: Spirit Support Hometown: Kennewick, Washington

Andrew Schuetz knew in the sixth grade that he wanted to own his own business. When he found out that there was such a thing as an entrepreneurship major, he thought, Wow this is perfect! For Andrew, deciding on a school meant choosing among the relatively few colleges and universities that offered an entrepreneurship major. I sat in on a class at my top three choices, he said, and my classroom experience at Hofstra [in Dr. Hayes entrepreneurship class] just blew me away. There were only about 20 students in the class, and it seemed like the professor knew the students on a personal level. It was just what I wanted. Andrews first three years at Hofstra have been, in a word, fantastic. There are so many opportunities here, he said. There are 170 clubs on campus, and then theres the city. Its been a great experience. As a first-year student, Andrew enrolled in a First-Year Connections cluster that included economics and math courses. The cluster was amazing, he said, and it was a nice way to meet other students with a common interest in business.

Major: Biochemistry Activity: Resident Assistant Hometown: Akwa Ibom, Nigeria

Going to college in America wasnt part of Kinni Akpabots original plans, but circumstances in her homeland and learning about Hofstras plan to start a medical school clinched her choice of colleges. After I took the SATs, I received information about Hofstra by e-mail, said Kinni, who dreams of working for the United Nations World Health Organization. Ive wanted to become a doctor for a long time, and when I read that Hofstra was opening a medical school, I decided it was the right place to start studying. Kinnis first year was a whirlwind of activities, including singing in the Hofstra Gospel Ensemble, participating in the Model United Nations program, serving as secretary of both the Residence Hall Council and the Pre-med Club, and volunteering at nearby Winthrop-University Hospital. There are so many things available to us on campus so many opportunities. The best equipment in my chemistry classes, a wonderful fitness center, and especially really helpful advisers who want you to succeed.

During my student orientation, I remember having a conversation with a senior who was in the process of successfully starting his own business.
