Process Simulation and Flowsheeting

Task1: Describe shortly all programs which have been discussed in the course. For each program give an example of a chemical batch process Task2: In which model of Aspen Plus one can define a Light and Heavy Key recovery? Do you know other models where you can specify similar recoveries? Task3: Which property models uses Aspen to describe Vapour Liquid equilibria? Mention the Advantages and Disadvantages of each group of property models Task4: Describe shortly the differences between True and Apparent Component Approach? Give a specific example Task5: How combines Aspen batch and continuous processes? Task6: Describe the difference between a Flow and a Pressure Driven Simulation in Aspen Dynamics Task7: Describe the effect which may have a constraint in an optimization problem? Give an example Task8: Describe the difference between the Heater and HEATX model? Task9: Describe the use and difference of Tray Sizing and Tray Rating in the Radfrac Model Task10: What is a tear stream and why may arise some problems during simulations? Task11: We got some messages of the Control Panel and we had to explain what could be concluded in respect to the convergence. Hint: The important thing is to identify the convergence method, the degree of nesting of each loop, the convergence method and which variables converge at the end Task12: We have a feed stream composed out of 60 mol/s MeOH 40 mol/s EtOH and 40 mol/s Water, send to a distillation column. In the distillate stream we get 58 mol/s MeOH, 20 mol/s EtOH and 2 mol/s of Water. Chech which of the following Design Specifications fullfill our case.

Case 1 Case2 Case 3 Case 4

Mol Purity Mass Purity Mol Recovery Mass Recovery

Value X Value W Value Y Value Z

MeOH MeOH MeOH MeOH, EtOH

Hint: In this exercise you need for the first time the Calculator, The calculations are easy and you can solve the exercise very quick Task13: Stream 1 is 100 mol/s of component A. Aspen uses the Sequential Mode to solve such a problem. With the following information try to calculate the amount of A in each stream In the Reactor you have a conversion of 70% of A In Stream 4 you have 60% of A of Stream 3 In Stream 7 you have 10% of A of Stream 5 What kind of models of Aspen would you use for rigorous calculation for this flowsheet

Hint: Try to solve it first without any guess for the recycling stream to get some initial values. Then use them to calculate the flowsheet once again. After 3-4 iterations it converges. IMPORTANT if stream 6 does not converge you choose a better value for it but you have to show that stream 4 has been converged before you get to 5. Task14: A process was described and we had to draw the corresponding flowsheet by using rigorous models (Do not worry, it is easy). Then we had the following tasks: Describe how would you try to solve such a kind of problem from the beginning? Hint: First short cut models afterwards rigorous (For example firstly DSTWU to see how many stages you need afterwards RADFRAC or firstly you just use HEATER and

afterwards you check if you can combine streams with a HEATX). After the simulation do a sensitivity analysis, design spec. At the end an optimization What kind of property models would you choose? How would you proceed? Hint: In this example we had some ionic species, therefore you have to use NRTL. But you do not need to define this property globally, it can be also be locally. For the rest of the system you could use something else for example RKS because the reaction was in the gas phase. Corresponding the second question I answered that I would do a binary analysis if I had some experimental data in order to compare them with the property model. (I am not sure if he wanted sth else but you may have also other ideas) Which part of the flowsheet should be checked more carefully? Hint: I think he meant the recycling stream, due to possible convergence problems. Do a simulation with an opening recycle stream to get some good initial guesses. If it does not converge use other convergence methods or change parameters of the methods.
