My how this summer is fying by!
The
Fourth of July is coming up, and since it
happens on Wednesday this year, we will
be publishing next weeks Beacon on
Tuesday, July 3, in time for the holiday.
So for those of you who wanted to place
classifed ads or send us news items,
please be aware that our deadline for
both will be much earlier next week. In
fact, get it to us by 4 p.m. this Friday,
June 29. Our regular deadline for clas-
sifeds is Monday at 4 p.m. We still get a
lot of calls on Tuesdays, many of which
we cant accommodate.

A pair of old replicas will be making
our area home for a while. A rebuilt
Ford Tri-Motor airplane will be giving
rides out at the Erie-Ottawa Regional
airport. Also, a true U.S. Navy PT Boat
will be docking at Port Clinton for a
while as well. It came into PC earlier this
week and was recently purchased by the
Liberty Aviation Museum which will
soon be open on State Road next to the
airport.

The Catawba/Marblehead Parade
of Homes is coming up and our big
kickoff event will be held from 6 to 8
p.m. on Thursday, July 5, at Crows Nest
in Danbury Township. The tickets for
that event are $20 each and include a
huge buffet and wine tasting with ALL
the proceeds going to the local unit of
Salvation Army. Tickets are on sale at
Crows Nest, Mon Ami, Crabby Joes,
Minuteman Press, The Beacon and at
the Salvation Army unit in the Sutton
Center.

Home sales activity through-
out Ohio jumped 19 percent in
May, according to a report from
the Ohio Association of Realtors.
Locally, the number of units sold
in May in the area covered by the
Firelands Association of Realtors
actually dropped slightly in the
same period. However, the good
news is that the average sale price
actually by nearly 9 percent and
nearly $10,000 per home sale in
the same period.
Our market appears to be es-
tablishing a very solid foundation
following the downturn we expe-
rienced as a result of the onset of
the economic collapse of 2008,
said Robert Miller, president of
the Ohio Association of Realtors.
The industry remains cautious-
ly optimistic that were making
strides toward having a sustain-
able, growing marketplace going
forward.
Despite the lower sales fgures
in May, the Firelands Associa-
tion of Realtors numbers show a
nearly $2 million increase in vol-
ume to go along with the $10,000
increase in the average sale price.
The trend line for the year also
remains strong, as the total of
units sold is up nearly 13 percent
and the total dollar volume is up
nearly $12 million.
We remain extremely con-
fdent about the Ohio housing
market as interest rates remain
at historic lows, prices have begun
to trend upward, inventories are
declining, sellers are increasingly
realistic in their pricing expecta-
tions and consumers understand
that long-term, owning a home is
a tremendous investment, said
Miller.
Local home values jump in May
The Portage Township Trustees and the
VFW Post 2480 Honor Guard met at the
Shook Cemetary last week to add the fn-
ishing touches to the revitilization proj-
ect that had been started by the Portage
Township Elementary School children
years ago.
The students began the project by
planting fowers by the sign. The Por-
tage Township Trustees continued the
effort by obtaining a grant from the
Ottawa-Sandusky-Seneca County Joint
Solid Waste District. With that grant,
the Trustees acquired the picket fence
and arbor.
For the fnal touch, Commander Rich-
ard Ellis of the VFW Post 2480 contacted
the Port Clinton City School Board and
requested the fag pole that was being
removed from the Bataan Elementary
School be donated to the Portage Town-
ship Trustees to be placed at Shook Cem-
etary. The school board agreed and Ellis
picked it up, took it to Shook Cemetery
and painted it. The Portage Township
Trustees then dug the whole and set the
pole. Now the American Flag donated by
the VFW 2480 fies high in honor of the
seven Civil War veterans interned there.
Meeting set to plan
future of Live Here

Leadership Ottawa County will host a planning
meeting to discuss the continuation of the
Ottawa County Live Here Buy Here cam-
paign and Taste of Ottawa County event.
Live Here Buy Here was developed as a class
project by the Leadership Ottawa County Class
of 2010 and carried on by the Class of 2011.
The meeting will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday,
June 28, at the Ottawa County Board of Devel-
opmental Disabilities, 235 N. Toussaint South
Road, Oak Harbor.

There is suddenly a major rebound hap-
pening with the local restaurant/entertain-
ment businesses. A number of new names
will appear on the local horizon giving lo-
cals and visitors more choices where to dine
and be entertained.
The Listening Room is being launched by
local entrepreneur Ron Miller, who owns
the two Our Guest Inns in Port Clinton.
He has been a Nashville music maven for a
number of years and on several recent visits
to Music City, Tennessee, came up with an
all new entertainment concept. In the small
banquet room in the downtown Our Guest
Inn, Ron will launch an intimate entertain-
ment featuring some the top up-and-com-
ers in Country Music. The purchase of al-
coholic beverages during the performances
will fulfll two-drink minimum charge of
$13.50. The shows will be at 6 and 9 Friday
and Saturday nights. The room seats 100
patrons. The atmosphere is patterned after
such renowned music clubs as the Village
Vanguard in New York City, The Trouba-
dour in Los Angeles and the Bluebird Caf
in Nashville. To purchase tickets in advance

The Island House is coming back! Since a
group of Toledo-area investors purchased
the Island House at the corner of Perry and
Madison streets in Port Clinton, food ser-
vice success has been spotty, at best. Now, a
new investor has stepped forward and has
brought in Kevin Lowe, long-time restau-
rant manager at Nates, the NorEaster Club
and Nagoya. His longest experience came
working for Nate Buchantz. He remembers
how Nates became one of the most popular
bar/restaurants in the area.
Lowe told me last week that their intent is
begin small and build the business back up.
They will have a limited menu of the most
popular items, and should resemble the old
Nates cuisine. They have named their dif-

passed away peacefully with his family by
his side on Tuesday, June 19, at Firelands
Regional Medical Center, Sandusky.

Clinton, followed by a Celebration of Life
at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Christy

Aubrey Alexis Johannsen was born at
3:37 a.m. June 11 at Firelands Regional
Medical Center to Todd and Stacey Jo-
hannsen of Marblehead. She weighed
7lbs. and was 20 inches long. Grandpar-
ents are Bob and Sheila Johannsen of Ca-
tawba Island and Bill and Nancy Kihlken
of Marblehead. Siblings are Mike and Lexi
Mitchell.

As the church God created evolved through human his-
tory, Jesus said, Go therefore and make disciples of all na-
tions, baptizing them in The Name of The Father and of
The Son and of The Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe
all that I have commanded you.
Of the state God created, speaking through St. Paul,
God decreed Let every person be subject to the govern-
ing authorities. For there is no authority except from God,
and those that exist have been instituted by God. And, of
course, it was on these beliefs and other Biblical teachings
that our own richly blessed nation was founded. This is
what James Madison, the fourth president and known as
The father of Our Constitution, meant when he made the

bility under God.

With all of the national concerns, even
protection of our funds in a nationally
insured banking institution can be at
issue. Several years ago the government
increased the amount of coverage from
$100,000 to $250,000 per depositor, per
insured bank, for each account ownership
category. The government devised a very
complicated formula to determine exactly
how much would be protected. It com-
bines the entire depositors like accounts
in the calculation. Protection is granted
based on ownership and stated benefcia-
ries.
SINGLE ACCOUNTS
Single accounts are accounts that are
held by one person in their individual
name. The total of account protection for
each banking institution is $250,000.00.
This would include checking, savings,
money market or certifcate of deposits
or any form of those listed. All of these ac-
counts are added together and considered
one for insurance purposes. It has noth-
ing to do with the number of accounts
but rather the ownership of the accounts.
Included in this category are any business
accounts that are held in a doing business
as nature. The account is separate only
if it is a corporation or totally separate
entity and has its own identifcation num-
ber, otherwise it is included in the above
account totals.
JOINT ACCOUNTS
This is an account owned by two or
more individuals. This would include
Joint with Right of Survivor or Tenants
in Common. Each person may have a
total of $250,000.00 in any one banking
institution. Each owner is considered to
have an equal ownership interest unless
clearly stated otherwise. If there are three
owners then each has a one-third owner-
ship. Each co-owner must have signed the
signature card and have an equal right of
withdrawal. If a person has $200,000.00
in various individual accounts and is a
one-half owner of an account that has
$160,000.00 then he or she will have
coverage of a total of $250,000.00 and
$30,000.00 will not be covered. All ac-
counts are considered taken together and
the use of the social security number is
not relevant for insurance protection
qualifcation.
PAYABLE ON DEATH ACCOUNTS
This is an account with a stated benef-
ciary. One must know the correct rules
to guarantee protection. These accounts
protect the benefciary. If there are two
benefciaries and one dies, coverage
terminates as to that benefciary and only
half of the account would be covered.
Bank input is important to insure proper
protection on this type of account.
INDIVIDUAL RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS
This is an account that is owned and
directed by you and not the plan admin-
istrator. This includes, IRAs, Roth IRAs,
401(k), Keogh plans, simplifed Employed
Pension Accounts and all 457 accounts.
All self-directed funds owned by the same
person are added together and protected
up to $250,000.00 in EACH banking
institution. It is irrelevant how many
benefciaries are listed. The only deter-
mination is $250,000.00 for each owner
in each banking institution. Remember,
this relates only to money accounts in an
insured bank. This has nothing to do with
stock. If an individual has seven different
accounts ranging from $20,000.00 to
$100,000.00 and many benefciaries listed
such as children and grandchildren only
a total of $250,000.00 is covered and the
balance is uninsured.
My recommendation if you have con-
siderable funds in several accounts at one
banking institution is to have the accounts
reviewed with a qualifed bank employee.
This will give you the comfort of know-
ing that the funds are totally protected
with the full faith and credit of the United
States.

ASSE International Student Exchange
Programs, in cooperation with the local
high school, is seeking local families to
host boys and girls between the ages of 15
to 18 from a variety of countries around
the world.
Students come with an enthusiasm to
practice their English and experience
American culture food, sports, shop-
ping and more. They will also share their
own culture with host families. Host fami-
lies welcome these students into their fam-
ily, not as a guest, but as a family member,
giving both the students and families a
rich cultural experience.

Local families needed
for exchange students
Immaculate Conception School has
hired Mike Gabel as the Kids Care Direc-
tor. Gabel holds a Bachelor of Science in
Education from Bowling Green State Uni-
versity with a major in Comprehensive
Business Education. He will be helping
with the marketing of ICS, will be visible
on the playground daily and will substitute
in the classroom when needed.
Gabels previous experience of 27 years
in the Catholic school in Fremont was as a
ffth grade teacher and coach for football,
baseball and basketball. His experience
also included a principal ship, Dean of
Students, athletic administrator and busi-
ness and computer instructor. He has been
involved in Relay for Life, CYO basketball
coach, Athletic Booster, Rotary Club mem-
ber, School Council, Holy Family Forma-
tion Team and is a Eucharist Minister in
his Parish of St. Josephs. He describes
himself as having an
excellent rapport with
students, a strong
commitment to Cath-
olic education, strong
family values and ac-
tive in his Catholic
faith.

mont with his wife of
30 years, Beth. They
have three grown
children: Brad, Carrie
and Jenny (Scott) Moyer, all living in the
Columbus area. He is the proud grand-
father of 5-year-old Derek Moyer and
19-month-old Grady Moyer.
Fremont educator joins team at ICS
GABEL
EHOVE Adult Career Center is proud to announce
the graduation of 15 students in the EHOVE Medical
Assistant program on June 21. Among the graduates
is Port Clintons Jordan Norman .
Medical Assisting is one of the nations fastest grow-
ing careers, according to the United States Bureau of
Labor Statistics. This is attributed to a predicted in-
crease in the number of physicians offces and out-
patient care facilities. The growing number of elderly
Americans who need medical treatment are factors
for the increased demand for medical assistants.
Medical Assistants are multi-skilled personnel who
can perform administrative and clinical procedures.
Physicians value the unique versatility more and
more, as managed care compels them to contain costs
and manage human resources effciently.
The EHOVE Medical Assistant students worked dil-
igently in this program to complete their 900 hours
required. The last 200 hours of their practicum ex-
perience were completed in surrounding physician
offces to include Norwalk, Bellevue, Clyde, Lorain,
Sandusky, Wellington, LaGrange and Vermilion.
We cannot thank the healthcare community
enough, said Tonya Lloyd, EHOVE Medical Assistant
Director and Coordinator.
Their support is instrumental in continuing the
students education with hands experience outside of
the classroom.

Clinton. He told me that the investor
group has suffcient capital to slowly

Mango Mamas, located behind Ko-
komo Bay on North Madison Street
in Port Clinton, has become an en-
tertainment venue of note. They are
now featuring a comedy club every
Wednesday, the popular Island Idol
Karaoke contest on Thursdays, and
live musical entertainment every Fri-
day and Saturday evening. Wednes-
day night jazz has become extremely
popular at Slaters on Madison Street.
Two other venues have appeared or
will appear in the near future. Bran-
dys Steak House is now operating at
what was the Islander on Sand Road.
Also, now ownership has taken over
the old Ponderosa Steak House, which
has been re-named The Thirsty Pirate
at the corner of Ohio 53 and 163.

The Tin Goose EAA Chap-
ter 1247 will be hosting the
Ford Tri-Motor rides at the
Erie-Ottawa Regional Air-
port in Port Clinton from
June 28-July 4. The aircraft
is a 1929 Ford from the Ka-
lamazoo AirZoo Museum
where this plane was just
released from their restora-
tion hangar last year after a
lengthy and detailed reno-
vation. It is back in the air
looking better than ever and ready for ser-
vice.
The particular plane has a celebrated his-
tory of being Northwest Airlines frst Ford
Tri-Motor and few for them in the early
1930s. It also few for Alaska Airlines oper-
ating out of Fairbanks, and carried smoke
jumpers later in the 1950s for Johnson
Flying Service operating out of Missoula,
Mont. It currently has Army Air Corps
ambulance markings on it painted in hon-
or of the U.S. military.

Fair through July 6. Anyone in the community is in-
vited to attend this fun reading event that helps inspire
children to become lifelong readers. The fair offers spe-
cially priced books and educational products, includ-
ing popular series, award-winning titles, new releases,
adult bestsellers, and other great reads from more than
100 publishers.
The Book Fair will be open daily from June 25 to July

The Salvation Army needs volunteers to ring the bell
for the Christmas in July Red Kettle event from 10 a.m.

and The Jet Express. All proceeds will go The Port
Clinton Salvation Armys current programs.

The newly formed Port Clinton Area Democratic
Club will be holding its meetings at 5:30 p.m. on the
second Wednesday of every month at club headquar-
ters, 432 Fremont Road, Port Clinton.
The clubs goal is to have guest speaker programs,
instructional workshops, recruit and support of can-
didates representing the Port Clinton area and sur-
rounding townships, encourage and foster youth in-
volvement as well as additional programs as the club
grows.
The Port Clinton Area Democratic Club would like
to extend an invitation to any and all interested parties
to attend the monthly meetings and become part of a
growing organization.

Club Reds sixth annual Sherry
& Chocolates event was hosted re-
cently by the clubs founder, Cindy
Amerine, at Love on the Rocks, the
lovely home of Kim and Liz Skri-
nak of Catawba Island. The annual
membership drive featured not only
a home tour, but also speakers who
shared information about Club Red
and its mission to educate the public
of the many Red Cross programs and
services offered locally and across the
country.
Special guest, vocalist Carmen
Miller, entertained the 75 women
present with her fabulous rendition
of I Have Nothing. Miller will be
joined by local piano man Greg Fox
during the cocktail hour of this years
Club Red gala, Black & White with a
Splash of Red to be held on Friday,
July 20, in the Catawba Island Club
Pavilion.

held on the campus of Bowling Green
State University. The event began
Sunday, June 10, and will end with
graduation and closing ceremony on
Sunday June 17.
American Legion Buckeye Boys
State is an eight-day hands-on expe-
rience in the operation of the demo-
cratic form of government, the orga-
nization of political parties, and the
relationship of one to the other in
shaping Ohio government. Founded
in 1936, Buckeye Boys State is the larg-
est Boys State program in the nation
with an attendance of 1,200 young
men annually. Boys State programs
throughout the nation are sponsored
by the American Legion, the nations
largest veterans organization.

Adamov will be signing copies of his sixth

Ive been a fan of Lakeside for years
and it was fun to write in the scenes at the
Clock Shop with Joe and Cindy when the
U.S. President appeared unexpectedly at
the back door. The witty exchange between
the three of them captured Joes stoicism
and Cindys excitement. Joe and Cindy
have been wonderful friends and it was a
privilege to feature them, the author said.
Adamov was the featured author at the
2006 Ernest Hemingway Literary Festi-
val in Key West. He was named Writer of
the Year for 2010 in regional competition
sponsored by the University of Akrons
Wayne College. His frst novel was a 2003
runner up as the top fction novel in the
Great Lakes (won by Pulitzer Prize winner
Middlesex.) All of his novels were rated 5
Stars by the Midwest Book Review and sev-
eral were named as top novels in northeast
Ohio by the Akron Beacon Journal. His
novels have won awards at the Hollywood
Book Festival, London Book Festival, New
York Book Festival and the Indie Awards.
Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimers
staff compared Adamovs writing style to
Clive Cussler and Tom Clancy. Cussler has
become a fan of Adamovs, had him speak
at his October 2008 and September 2010
convention and endorsed his last novel,
The Other Side of Hell.
A screenplay has been prepared on the
frst novel, Rainbows End, at the request
of Dominic Sena, director of Kalifornia,
Gone in Sixty Seconds, Swordfsh and
Whiteout. The screenplay is currently
being revised. A screenplay is under devel-
opment on Tan Lines.
Adamov is planning on a fall 2012 release
for his next novel, Sanduste, which takes
readers from Put-in-Bay on a worldwide
race as rivals seek to identify and interpret
pieces of a puzzle leading to Lincolns se-
cret code and a valuable treasure.

St. Joseph Church Choir will be
hosting Marblehead Summerfest in
James Park, Marblehead, on July 6,
7, and 8. Summerfest is a new parish
event replacing the Parish Fall Fes-
tival in September. This event, held
in the Parish Hall, featured carnival-
style games, food and live music.
The newly developed Marblehead
Summerfest will consist of carnival
rides, carnival games, vendors, bake
sale and more. Bar-B-Que Traveler
will be preparing chicken and ribs.
Other foods will include summer-
time favorites such as funnel cakes,
hand-dipped corn dogs, cotton can-
dy and taffy. There will be a beer tent
and live music overlooking the park.

Marblehead Peninsula Community
and surrounding areas.

Marblehead Summerfest 2012
Each summer, the Genoa Area
Chamber of Commerce invites car
enthusiasts from across northwest
Ohio as they sponsor the Genoa Su-
per Cruise-ins. Proud owners of their
new and restored cars, trucks and
motorcycles line Main Street of his-
toric downtown Genoa as Cruisin
Zeake announces cars and plays 50s
and 60s classic rock music. The event
is open to the public. The downtown
restaurants also offer sidewalk grilled
foods and drink for a good ole fash-
ion family adventure.
For participants, the Cruise-In in-
cludes: free registration, door prizes
from Genoa Merchants and drawings
for gas cards. Also featured is a 50/50
raffe to beneft local charities.
The Super Cruise-Ins are sched-
uled the last Tuesday of the summer
months, June, July and August. The
next 2012 Super Cruise-In is sched-
uled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 31.

the event before passing away in No-
vember 2007 from cancer.
Cars, trucks and bikes from virtu-

hicles and waxing eloquently about
the history and renovations of their
