Exam Questions: Section 1 1. Describe in detail how the process of forgiveness, both receiving it from God and giving it to others, assists in addiction recovery. Does this correlate with any of the 12 steps? How and which one(s) or why not? The process of forgiveness, both receiving it from God and giving it to others, assists in addiction recovery by opening your eyes to a different perspective, to something more than just yourself. By trusting god and knowing that he forgives us for our sins how can we not forgive others, what would make us think we were better than god? It Gives us humility and trust that our hearts will be taken care of so that we can have peace with our selfs and have the strength and ability to let go of the resentments, allowing forgiveness to others in turn having the ability to accept forgiveness from others . The Steps come in 3 sections, trust god (higher power and admitting there is a god, spiritual awakening), admit faults (sins), cleaning out your house (forgiveness). 2. What is fragmentation? How does the process of fragmentation start? Why are Surrender and the admission of needing help vital steps to becoming whole? How are these themes assimilated into the 12 Step Support Groups? Fragmentation starts there is a destruction of the family. One of the parents is absent full time or part time. It causes the family to have a disruption so that the child is raised with a major lacking component. Different parenting rolls cause different emotional strains.

When you surrender you are allowing yourself to have someone show you something different. Strength is in vulnerability. Applied to the steps surrendering is opening yourself up to being taught a new way of doing thing and youre more trusting. Being able to trust in a new way of life is an important component to a recovering addicts life. 3. Discuss Jesus statement, It is finished. What does that mean? How does an addict Apply it to his/her life to move forward in freedom? He was referring to his work on earth and salvation bei9ng done on earth. It applies to an addict in recovery because they have been saved. They dont have to look back. The focus is moving forward and staying clean. No need to dwell on the past. 4. Describe how the statement, I am an addict hinders mental and emotional freedom From addictions/fragmentation? Why is this? I am an addict hinders freedom because it keeps you stuck in the mentality that you are broken and continuously being healed instead of you is healed. An example of a car crash was used in class. You arent always healing from an accident. At some point you heal and you move forward in your life. Always thinking you are an addict or claiming to be a recovering addict assumes you are continually healing and god says he can heal all sickness. Claiming to be an addict takes away from the Faith that god sticks to his word and puts doubt in his word.

5. How have the seven statements of the Cross affected the recovery process for the interviewed Sponsors Sponsees? Its all about helping someone else. You cant keep what you have without giving it away and that includes you sobriety. N.A. is based on one addict helping another. Section 2 This section is intended to address information obtained primarily from the readings. 1. Combining what you learned in lecture and what you read in the article titled Spirituality and Psychosocial Rehabilitation, what were the five purposes of the Spiritual group intervention? How did these purposes help 100% of those in the SG reach their goals? How are these different from or similar to the Support Group You? Attended? They focused on a higher power and healing. I havent went to many support group meetings the ones I have been to were very similar. Taught skills based on healing self so you had new techniques to use to handle situations. 2. Combining what you learned in lecture and what you read in the article titled Spirituality and Faith-Based Organizations, what benefits and coping mechanisms Does faith offer for both mental health and substance abuse addiction?

They have a lot to offer, I feel like it is closely related to motivational interviewing. Focusing on bringing the client up instead of down. The difference being that instead of the client being in control letting god be in the driver seat. 3. Based on all three articles, would you recommend further research is needed to show the correlation that faith assists in addiction recovery? What would you recommend? And why? I would say that there is a very strong correlation but there are always going to be disbelievers and there should always be more research. More information in any subject much less something as important as faith and our religion. Section 3 This section is intended to reflect what you have learned. 1. After taking this seminar do you feel there is validity in utilizing faith to gain freedom? From addictions? Why or why not? Yes I do. I think that faith and a higher power gives you motivation outside of yourself to work towards wanting to better yourself. Faith also gives you peace to know that youre not alone 2. Would you apply the Seven Statements of the Cross to your own life? Why or why Not?

Yes, Its focused on giving to others and treating others the way you want to be treated. Its a caring and companionate way to live. Hard but ideal. 3. Would you recommend this course to a friend? Why or why not?

I would recommend this class to others. I found it very interesting and it opened my mind to other perspectives.
