Heat vs Health
Signs & symptoms of heat related illnesses
Many of us will be heading outside to have some fun this
summer, or have to work on outside activities. It is important to
take steps to avoid several heat related health issues.
Most of the health issues caused by heat can be avoided by frst
focusing on avoiding dehydration. Dehydration is when your body
is losing more fuids than it is taking in. It is a common problem,
especially among young children.
The most common signs of dehydration are:
Thirst, cracked lips, dizziness or lightheadedness, dry sticky
mouth, extreme headache, nausea, producing less or darker urine,
fatigue, and loss of appetite.
Most of us really enjoy a nice tall glass of iced tea or our favorite
soft drink. Surprisingly, these will only add to dehydration right
along with alcoholic beverages.
Try to get into a habit of drinking a large glass of water before
heading outside or just being in the heat. Dont wait until your
body says youre thirsty. By then dehydration has already begun.
Continue drinking every 15 minutes or so. Sports drinks (such as
Gatorade) will help replenish sodium, electrolytes and potassium
that is lost when you sweat. Fruit drinks can contain too much
sugar and upset your stomach, especially if you are hot when
you drink them. Diluting fruit drinks with water will help prevent
stomach irritation.
Wear light clothing. People in the desert often wear layers of
cotton clothing covering their body. This actually helps keep them
cool by protecting their skin from the direct sun, and absorbing
sweat. As the air hits the moist clothing, it cools the skin underneath.
Dehydration can lead to kidney failure if not treated, so pay
attention to your fuid intake!
Dehydration is not the only thing that can happen when
exposed to heat for extended periods of time.
Heat exhaustion Although not the most serious problem,
heat exhaustion is the most common heat-related ailment. Heat
exhaustion happens when a person sweats a lot and does not drink
enough fuids or take in enough salt, or both.
Signs & symptoms: Sweaty, weak or tired, possibly giddy,
nausea, pale clammy skin
What to do: Rest in a cool place. Drink a sports drink to replace
electrolytes. Avoid caffeinated beverages. If the person is vomiting
or fainting, get medical attention.
Heat stroke Heat stroke is the most serious health problem
for people out in the heat, but is not very common. It is caused by
the bodys failure to regulate its core temperature. Sweating stops
and the body cannot get rid of excess heat. Victims will die unless
they receive proper treatment quickly.
Signs & symptoms: Mental confusion, delirium, fainting,
seizures, high body temperature, dry skin, possibly red or
bluish in color.
What to do: Call 9-1-1 immediately and ask for an ambulance.
Move victim to a cool area. Soak the victim with cool water. Fan
the victim to increase cooling.
Heat cramps Heat cramps are muscle spasms and can be
very painful. It happens when a person drinks a lot of water, but
does not replace salts lost from sweating. It will usually happen in
muscles you have been using and are tired.
Signs & symptoms: Muscle spasms or cramps
What to do: Drink a sports drink with electrolytes.
Fainting Fainting usually happens to someone who is not
used to being in the hot environment and is not moving around
much. You need to move around and not stand still to reduce the
chances of fainting.
Signs & symptoms: Brief loss of consciousness, sweaty skin
What to do: Lie down in a cool place. If the victim does not
recover fairly quickly, seek medical attention
Heat rash Heat rash is also sometimes called prickly heat.
It can occur in hot and humid environments where sweat cannot
evaporate easily. When the area covered by the rash is large or if it
becomes infected, it may become extremely uncomfortable. It can
be prevented by resting in a cool place and allowing the skin to dry.
Signs & symptoms: A rash, consisting of small pink or red
bumps. Itching.
What to do: Keep skin clean and dry, wear loose cotton
clothing. Air conditioning and cool baths may help. If needed,
apply an over the counter lotion to help with pain and itching.
Lets all have a safe and happy summer.
Drink plenty of fuids
Use a sun block lotion
Wear a hat and sunglasses
**WARNING**
If you stop sweating, you are in DANGER
Go drink water and cool off IMMEDIATELY!

Eagle Rock Energys 15th Annual Crappie
Tournament & Auction a Great Success
By Patty Lenderman
The lakes are bustling with various fshing tournaments,
weekend warriors, summer vacationers and families. Included
in the mix was the 15th Annual Eagle Rock Energy Crappie
Tournament on June 2nd. In an event like this, the fshing
tournament is only part of the story.
Every year for 15 years now Eagle Rock Energy has headed up this
community event that includes a crappie fshing tournament, lunch,
fsh fry for dinner, and a live and silent auction. The purpose of the
tournament is to raise much needed funds for some hard working
entities that sorely need it. They include: Lakes Area Hospice,
Brookeland Youth Baseball & Softball, Jasper Youth Shooting Sports
Association, and Vernon Parish TRIAD and Special Kids.
The crappie tournament was a team event, and a team could
consist of one or two individuals. More than one team could fsh
out of the same boat, and each person was allowed to catch the
state limit of 25 crappie, but each team could only weigh in a
total of 10.
For the second year in a row, the winners of the crappie
tournament were Joe Moorhead and Reese Sparrow. While
there have been other teams that have had the dubious honor
of winning this tournament two years in a row, no one has
accomplished three in a row. Moorhead and Sparrow looked like
they were up to the challenge to try to win it again next year!
All of the fsh brought in were cleaned on site by volunteers
and then freshly fried along with French fries, hush puppies and
coleslaw for a free dinner for everyone in attendance. Fred Rape
of Jasper Lawn Service coordinated the meals and workers to help
prepare and serve them. Nederland Sonic, Zummo Meat Company
of Beaumont, and Mrs. Bairds Bimbo Bakery of Beaumont
contributed as well. Balon Valves personnel took care of the
cooking for the fsh fry.
There were many auction items donated by companies and
individuals which were displayed and everyone had an opportunity
to bid on the silent auction items. Once everyone enjoyed a
wonderful meal, Junior Shofner took the microphone and began the

scrumptious dinner for everyone in attendance.

bidding for the live auction. By the end of the evening, $38,450 had been raised with more donors
calling in with their monetary gifts.
This annual event could not happen without the community support. We would like to thank
all of the anglers that fshed in the tournament, the men and women who came and helped with set
up, registration, cooking, and serving the meals. A very special thanks to all of the businesses and
individuals who donated the auction items, and there were many. Thank you to Junior Schofner for
handling the auction and to the generous people who bought the items. This year we topped the funds
raised last year by several thousand dollars, and there are still monetary donations being brought in.
Eagle Rock is proud to support our community and will continue to hold this annual event as long as
the community supports it. Hope to see you all next year! Peggy West, Eagle Rock Energy.
The event is held in June every year at the Umphrey Family Pavilion. For more information please

Toledo Bend catfsh regulations changed last year to no minimum length limit for channel and
blue catfsh with a bag limit of 50 fsh (no more than fve fsh may be 20 or greater). This regulation
differs from Texas statewide regulations of a 12 minimum length limit and a bag limit of 25 fsh.
Toledo Bend catfsh regulations were changed as part of an agreement between Texas and Louisiana
to make fshing regulations on Toledo Bend the same for both the Texas and Louisiana sides one set
of rules for one lake. Now fshing regulations for all species of fsh are the same for both sides. So now
that we are operating under new rules, where do we stand in regards to catfsh?
Texas Parks and Wildlife conducts creel surveys on Toledo Bend every other year to estimate overall
fshing effort, harvest, size of fsh harvested, and the amount of effort directed at certain fsh species.
TPWD just completed a creel survey on Toledo Bend that may help answer the question of whether
the new catfsh regulations are a good thing or not. We are aware that most of the catfsh harvest that
takes place is from trotlines and juglines, what we call passive gear. Our creel surveys only sample rod
and reel fshermen. None-the-less, it appears that the overall catfsh population on Toledo Bend is in
pretty good shape.
Of all the rod and reel fshermen we interviewed while fshing (> 500) only 2.5% of them were
targeting catfsh (again a lot more catfsh fshermen exists, but as passive gear fshermen). We can
infer quite a bit from these fshermen and how they did. An estimated 12,200 channel and blue catfsh
were caught during a six month period that we conducted our creel survey. Based on the amount of
fshing effort that was devoted by fshermen an estimated four catfsh were caught for every hour that
was spent fshing, which is a very good catch rate. The catch rate tells us that we have very abundant
catfsh population.
Is the part of the regulation that limits harvest to only fve fsh that can be > 20 needed?
Biologically speaking maybe not, but overall it may have some positive benefts. Based on gill net
sampling results we do not have a diffcult time catching 20 catfsh, especially blue catfsh that reach
larger sizes than channel catfsh. As of now our data does not suggest that larger fsh are in danger
of being overfshed, however with the new increased bag limit (especially for passive gear fshermen)
that case could possibly change. There is also a strong desire by catfsh fshermen to have realistic
opportunities to catch larger fsh when they go fshing, so the fve fsh > 20 helps to ensure that
expectation is there. We know that the majority of harvested rod and reel catfsh are in the 10-14
range. This is likely a function of the size of the majority of the fsh out there as opposed to what the
preferred size of fsh that is to be kept. The biggest concern that we have is the age of the fsh. On
Toledo Bend it takes an average of 4 years for both channel and blue catfsh to reach 12. That isnt
the end of the world, but it is not stellar growth rates. The increase in the bag limit and eliminating
the minimum length limit should increase harvest and reduce the population of smaller fsh,
allowing for more rapid growth to larger sizes.
We have collected some information from passive gear fshermen and so far the results are both
promising and corresponds to our gill net surveys. Passive gear fshermen readily catch catfsh >
20, in fact half of the passive gear caught catfsh we observed were > 20. Of all the passive gear
fshermen we interviewed on average each fshing party had to release on average 21 catfsh / day
due to them being over the 5 fsh > 20 limit. This tells us that there is no shortage of 20 catfsh
and quite possibly we need to reevaluate this regulation. That is not to say some protective measures
may be needed for larger fsh, but there is no need to be over restrictive. Texas Parks and Wildlife
is continuing to gather more age data for larger fsh, collecting data from passive gear fshermen
to determine catch rates of larger fsh, and evaluating the opinions of fshermen on what future
regulations will work best for them. Toledo Bend is a world class fshery and I foresee it as being one
for years to come.

questions please dont hesitate to contact me at dan.ashe@tpwd.state.tx.us or call me at

Freeman bags 68-15 to Win
FLW EverStart Series - Texas Division
By Jim Binns
The FLW EverStart Series Texas Division, hosted by Sabine-Parish Tourist Commission &
Sabine River Authority (SRA), held its third of four stops for the 2012 season on May 31 June
2, 2012 at Toledo Bend Reservoir and it turned out to be a real shoot-out. When the smoke cleared
legendary pro Glen Freeman of Converse, Louisiana fnished in the Pro-Angler top spot and Scott
Bailey of Longview won the Co-Angler division. Heres what took place ..
Thursday - It was an exciting morning at beautiful Cypress Bend Park and the area was a beehive
of activity. The American fag waved gently in the breeze, a prayer was delivered for the safety of all
contestants and the National anthem was played. It was defnitely a special moment for all. The FLW
EverStart Series Texas Division event kicked off with a 6am launch as the 113 pro anglers and their
respective co-anglers launched their colorful fshing rigs and headed for honey holes on various
parts of the sprawling 185,000 acre lake. Toledo Bend was about two feet low and rumored to be in a
typical post-spawn pattern with many different fshing techniques coming into play.
At mid-morning, Mother Nature showed us why you need a good set of raingear as a weather system
swept through the area with gusty winds and lots of rain. But the unsettled weather and dropping
barometer was a bonus for some anglers because it triggered the bass and showed just how good
Toledo Bend can be.
Pro Angler Division - Texas pro Tim Reneau, topped the frst days standings by placing a
whopping fve bass limit weighing 26-10 on the weigh-in scales. Reneaus frst bass of the day was a
9-pounder followed by a 7-pounder. WOW! It was an early bite for Reneau and most of his fsh were
caught over deep grass in about 20-22 feet on a lure he invented a 1 -ounce Lateral Perch. This
hybrid jig has a lead head and a body that sinks from side to side like a wounded bream.
Louisiana pro George Jeane Jr. placed second with a 25-12 limit and a kicker bass that weighed
a whopping 13-4. This catch is in sixth-place on the list of heaviest fsh caught in FLW competition.
The bass was caught off a brush pile at mid-day on a Texas-rigged watermelon/candy Berkley Havoc
Bottom Hopper. Jeane only had fve keeper bites all day but they were the good ones. LaMonte Loyd, of
Gilmer, Texas tied Jeane with a bag weighing 25-12 and his bass were suspended in trees on a hump
in 25 feet of water. He used a custom painted (bream pattern) deep diving crankbait. David Harvey, of
Beaumont, Texas caught a limit weighing 25-10 off main lake ledges for fourth place by using a Big
Bite Creek Creature (tilapia color) on a Carolina rig and big worms rigged Texas style. Harold Allen, of
Shelbyville, La. caught an even 24 pounds to take ffth place and in his bag was a 9-6 toad. Allen fshed
Texas-rigged 10- and 11-inch worms slowly off main lake ledges in about 25 feet of water.
Rounding out the top-10 pro leaders were: 6th: Glen Freeman, of Converse, La., 22-11, 7th: Russell
Cecil, of Willis, Texas, 20-09, 8th: Ryan Pinkston, of Center, Texas, 19-11, 9th: Bert Thompson, of
Benton, La., 19-11, 10th: Phil Marks, of Dallas, Texas, 19-8
Glenn Freeman proudly showing a nice 8 pound
kicker that made his nal day bag weigh a total
of 24-12 lbs. He had a 3 day limit of 68-15.

Co-Angler Division - Benny Aylor, of Round Rock, Texas paired with Trinity, Texas, pro David
Curtis for a limit weighing 16-4 and led the feld. Most of his bass were taken off a ledge on a
Tennessee Shad color Norman DD22 crankbait and a shaky head ftted with a 10 -inch Yum Money
Worm. Ronald Milton, of Maurepas, La. took second with 14-6 while Gary Reimers, of Taylor, Texas
placed third with 14-1. Bennie Anderson, of Grand Prairie, Texas and Kerry Barnett, of Waldron, Ark.
tied for fourth with 13-5.
Rounding out the top-10 co-angler leaders were: 6th: Steve Corbin, of Bacliff, Texas, 12-10, 6th: Buddy
Hicks, of Port Neches, Texas, 12-10, 8th: Howard Hartley, of Berwick, La., 12-0, 9th: Elton Brock, of Denton,
Texas, 11-10, 10th: Kenny Moser, of Alba, Texas, 11-6.
George Jeane Jr. took Snickers Big Bass honors with a lunker weighing 13-4. Six stringers
over 20 pounds were brought to the scales with the pros catching 61 limits and the co-anglers
adding 18.
Friday - Anglers were greeted by bright skies and strong winds that made the open water look
like the Gulf of Mexico. I was on the water and I assure you that the waves were raging white-caps
that sometimes exceeded fve to six feet in height. This severely hurt the chances of many open water
anglers and those wanting to fsh distant locations just couldnt get safely to their spots. But this feld
of anglers adapted fast.
Pro Angler Division - David Harvey caught a limit weighing 20-1 that gave him a two-day total
of 45-11. He caught his bass in open water on a Carolina rig and a drop-shot rig using a Big Bite
Baits trick worm.
Glen Freeman, of Converse, La. is always tough regardless of the weather. Freeman was the only
other pro angler to break 20 pounds on both days as he brought 21-8 to the scales for a second place
two-day total of 44-3. Freeman fshed deep ledges and points with jigs and soft plastics and his all
day bite produced about 15 keepers. LaMonte Loyd, of Gilmer, Texas fnished third with a limit of bass
weighing 18-1 for a total of 43-13. He worked humps in 22 feet of water with his custom-painted deep
diving crankbait, a Texas-rigged Berkley Power Worm and a Combat jig with a Sweet Beaver. Tim
Reneau dropped to fourth place with 13-15 with a total of 40-9. He caught his bass on football jigs
(Strike King/Rage Craw trailer) off deep water ledges. George Jeane Jr. fshed reaction baits and caught
a limit of 13-9 for a two-day total of 39-5 and ffth place.
Rounding out the top-10 pro leaders were: 6th: Russell Cecil, of Willis, Texas, 35-9, 7th: Ryan
Pinkston, of Center, Texas, 35-3, 8th: James Elliott, of Center, Texas, 34-3, 9th: Phil Marks, Dallas,
Texas, 33-10, 10th: Kris Wilson, of Montgomery, Texas, 33-10
Co-Angler Division - Scott Bailey, of Longview, Texas caught a heavy sack weighing 24-6 that
moved him from 13th place to 1st with a two-day total of 34-2. His catch included a lunker weighing
7-pound, 3-ounces. His bass were caught over ledges in 22-24 feet on a Carolina rig (4-foot leader)
with a redbug color Zoom Dead Ringer. He caught fve keeper bass during the day.
Kerry Barnett, of Waldron, Ark. placed second with 26-6, Benny Aylor, of Round Rock, Texas dropped
to third with 26-4, James Callaghan, of De Berry, Texas was fourth with 25-15, and Buddy Hicks, of
Port Neches, Texas took ffth with 22-5.
Rounding out the top-10 co-angler leaders: 6th: Mark Howard, of Mesquite, Texas, 21-12, 7th:
Bennie Anderson, of Grand Prairie, Texas, 19-13, 8th: Kenny Moser, of Alba, Texas, 18-2, 9th: Randy
Hicks, of Lumberton, Texas, 18-0, 10th: Neil Herline, of Silsbee, Texas, 17-8
James Callaghan took the Snickers Big Bass award with bass weighing 8-4. Pro anglers caught 50 limits
and the co-anglers added 16.
Saturday Only the top 10 pros and top 10 co-anglers competed on day three and the 3pm weigh-
in was held at the Many, Louisiana Wal-Mart. It was an exciting time for all as the crowds cheered for
each contestant as they weighed in their fsh.
Pro-Angler Division To be a winner in these events you need to be versatile, knowledgeable
and persistent. Glen Freeman showed all of these traits in winning the FLW EverStart Series Texas
Division in grand style by a margin of 9 1/2 pounds. Despite the bright skies, wind and changing
conditions, Freeman managed to bring in bags of bass that weighed 22-11, 21-8 and 24-12 for each
of the tournament days and had a tournament total of 68-15. Freemans fnal day bag, when all the
chips were on the line, was (1) the biggest of the day, (2) he was the only pro angler that weighed
in a 20+ pound bag each day and (3) did I mention that in that fnal bag was an 8-pound kicker?
That is impressive!
There is an old saying that the early bird gets the worm and in this case it applied to bass fshing.
Freeman caught all of his fsh on timbered ridges in the mid-lake area and the bite was basically
over after the frst couple of hours. On Day One the fsh seemed to be in the 20-25 foot depths, on Day
Two they moved to a 15-20 foot depth and on the Day Three Freeman caught them in the 8-12 foot
range. Freeman used a Shimano 7-foot rod coupled to a Shimano reel and used 17-pound Seaguar
fuorocarbon to work his Texas-rigged 10 -inch blue feck Yum MightEE worm (-oz. slip-sinker)
and a -oz. Booyah football jig (green pumpkin skirt with some strands of purple). The areas he
fshed were pure structure no grass, but having deepwater nearby was the key. Freeman also gave
much credit to his Ranger boat and Yamaha outboard motor that was able to get him safely to and
from his fshing locations. Glen Freeman is certainly one of the quality pros in our sport today.
Del Rio, Texas pro Tim Reneau made a strong comeback by weighing in a nice bag weighing 18-14
that gave him second place with 59-7. Heavy winds hampered Reneau from working his Lateral Perch
(green tail perch color) on day two, but on the fnal day he was able to use the Lateral Perch and a
football jig with a Strike King Rage Craw trailer to complete his limit. Great job Tim!
David Harvey, of Beaumont, Texas started the fnal morning in frst place after weighing in bags
of 25-10 and 20-1, but on the fnal day he had a limit of bass weighing 12-9 and took third place
with 58-4. Harvey used a Carolina rig with Big Bite worms and an Oldham football jig with a Big Bite
Creature for his fsh. Lamonte Loyd, of Gilmer, Texas caught a limit weighing 11-6 to fnish fourth
with 55-3. Baits of choice for this fne angler were the Strike King Series 6XD crankbait and his own
custom painted bream pattern crankbait. Ryan Pinkston, of Center, Texas, used a Bomber Fat Free
Shad and a Strike King 6XD to get a limit weighing 16-14 for a total weight of 52-1.
Rounding out the top-10 pro leaders: 6th: James Elliott, of Center, Texas, 52-1, 7th: Russell Cecil, of
Willis, Texas, 51-5, 8th: George Jeane Jr., of Evans, La., 49-7, 9th: Kris Wilson, of Montgomery, Texas,
48-8, 10th: Phil Marks, of Dallas, Texas, 40-11
Co-Angler Division Scott Bailey, of Longview, Texas is a quiet guy but he carries a big stick.
Going into the fnal day he led the co-angler competition by a 7-pound, 12-ounce margin. On the
fnal day he weighed in 11-15 for a total of 46-1 which was nearly nine pounds ahead of his nearest
competitor. On the fnal day Bailey used a Carolina rig on his starting spot and then he and his
partner ran to the southern part of the lake and worked grass with a Texas rig to fnish out their
limits. The Carolina rig had a 1-ounce weight, 4-foot leader and a red bug Zoom Dead Ringer for bait.
The Texas rig had a -ounce tungsten weight with a watermelon blue fake Gene Larew Salt Craw.
Benny Aylor, of Round Rock, Texas led day one with a 16-pound, 4-ounce bag, but fnished second
in the event with 37-2. Aylor fshed a Carolina rig with 8-inch green pumpkin lizards and Yum
Pumpkin Ed jigs with a 10 -inch green pumpkin worm trailer. Kerry Barnett, of Waldron, Ark.
caught 6-13 and took third with 33-3. James Callaghan caught two keepers for 3-2 and took fourth
with 29-1. Neil Herline of Silsbee, Texas fnished ffth with 27-8.
Rounding out the top-10 co-angler leaders: 6th: Randy Hicks, of Lumberton, TX, 26-15, 7th: Kenny
Moser, of Alba, TX, 26-13, 8th: Buddy Hicks, of Port Neches, TX, 25-8, 9th: Mark Howard, of Mesquite, TX,
23-8, 10th: Bennie Anderson, - Grand Prairie, TX, 22-9
A tip of the fshing cap to FLW and all of its fne folks for putting together such a great event. And a
special congratulations to all of the anglers that competed in this years event. - JB

The other day a friend said hello and that he
enjoyed the article I had written on nutria rats. I
told him that I didnt remember writing one on
that, and after checking I had not. As a result this
months article will cover some of the biology,
history and management of the nutria.
The nutria (Myocastor coypus) is a large semi
aquatic vegetarian rodent covered with a dense
grayish brown fur. It is awkward and clumsy looking
on land, but can actually move quite well. It does
not see well , and compensates with a good sense
of hearing. When scared the nutria will head to the
closest water and swim away underwater or lay on
the bottom. The nutria reproduces very quickly and
can have up to 3 litters of 1 to 13 young (called kits)
per year. For cover they will build circular platforms
of compacted vegetation or burrow into levees,
dikes, or other embankments. They live primarily in
freshwater marshes, wetlands, and water bodies.
Nutria are native to South America primarily
in Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia and Chile. They have
been introduced into many continents including
North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. They were
introduced primarily for the fur industry on fur
farms and then escaped to the wild. Nutria frst
entered the US in California in 1889. They were
introduced into Louisiana in the 1930s and escaped
as a result of a hurricane destroying pens. They can
now be found over the Eastern two thirds of Texas.
Most places in the US where they occur, nutria
are considered pests. This is due in part to their
eating habits. They eat vegetation preferring the
base, rhizomes, and roots of a plant. Nutria are
voracious eaters eating as much as 25% of their
body weight every day which can cause eat outs.
These eat outs are areas where the vegetation
has been removed creating problems for other
wildlife and humans. The other part of the pest
picture comes from the making of burrows in levees,
dikes, and embankments for dens and cover. These
diggings can undermine and cause rupture of key
water control structures.
Control of nutria is being accomplished by
several methods. More traditional methods such
as trapping and shooting are common. Louisiana
Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has even
implemented bounties for nutria tails in the past.
In addition, newer methods such as promoting
the meat for consumption and the fur for fur
industry have been used with some success. For
example the meat is sold in markets in Russia,
China, and Korea. The meat is similar to rabbit
or dark turkey. Louisiana has followed suit and
begun efforts to raise interest in nutria for meat
and fur.
The nutria has been introduced into the United
States from South America and due to the ability
to reproduce quickly and take advantage of a
diversity of habitat types has spread widely. Many
agencies and places have begun to mange nutria
populations and the situation has come full circle
with one possible solution being the cause. For
more information contact your local biologist or
consult a website created by Louisiana Department
of Wildlife and Fisheries at www.nutria.com.
I am excited to premier our new 10 BigTail Worm. It is a
phenomenally versatile bait. Made with enough fotation so that it stands
up off the bottom when fshed with either Carolina or Texas rig.
Notice the extra wide tail. It has abundant action on top or below the
water surface. The ways and conditions this bait can be fshed are so
diverse, it will quickly become a staple in your tackle box. Howard

Thibodeaux and Bennett Win
Up & Coming Outdoors night tournament
By Travis Merritt
Up and Coming Outdoors hosted its frst tournament
of the 2012 Toledo Bend Night Series June 2, 2012.
The skies were clear when the 60 boats took to Toledo
Bend from Big Bass Marina on Saturday night. As the
moon started to rise, so did the wind, which caused
some the teams to abandon their primary locations
and search for protected areas off of the main lake.
Despite the wind, the fshing was good for several teams
who brought nice stringers to the scales under the new
covered pavilion at Big Bass Marina. There were 20 plus
fsh over fve pounds weighed in, including one that was
almost ten pounds. Merritt said many teams had one or
two really good fsh in their bags but had two or three
small fsh that kept the weights down for the night.
Patience paid off for Shannon Thibodeaux and Janie
Bennett, of Hemphill, Texas. The team took the early
points lead and won $2,230.00 for their fve fsh weighing
26.35 lbs. The team fshed one location all night and
only caught 6 keepers in eight hours of fshing. It was
2:10 AM when Thibodeaux and Bennett caught their
fourth keeper of the night which was barely fourteen
inches. Then, about 2:30 AM, Shannon culled it with a
fve pounder. Thibodeaux and Bennett fshed the south
of the lake in Shannons Mercury powered Champion.
The team reported catching their fsh on black and blue
Ole Monster worms with 3/8 ounce weight in 18 to 20
feet of water. Shannon and Janie would like to thank
Busch Beer and Real Tree Energy Drinks for their support.
Thibodeaux said, The Real Tree Energy Drinks were a
key to our success. It kept us alert throughout the night
waiting on those critical bites.
Cole Stewart and Rustin McClelland took second
place honors with a nice fve bass limit weighing 20.68
pounds. Stewart and McClelland got off to a great start,
catching their three heaviest fsh before dark but things
slowed down once the sun went down for the young
team from Hemphill, Texas. Cole reported only catching
two more keepers the rest of the night. The team was
dead sticking Ole Monster worms and ounce football
jigs in 20 to 25 feet of water on points. Stewart and
McClelland reported fshing three different areas on the
south end of the lake from their Johnson powered King
Fisher bass boat. Cole and Rustin won $960.00 for the
efforts and are in position to take over the points lead
with a good fnish at the next tournament June 16th.
Fishing slow and a limited number of spots seemed
to be the secret to Saturday night and it paid off for
perennial threats Thomas Jordan and Keith Shell. The
team weighed in the only other bag over 20 pounds
and grabbed third place and $1,235.00 for the night on
the Bend. The teams 20.01 lb bag included the Busch
Beer Big Bass of the Tournament which weighed an
impressive 9.72 lbs. Jordan and Shell won $295.00 for
big bass plus $200.00 cash and a KVD mirror from
Busch Beer to go with their $740.00 for third place.
Shell said they caught their fsh on red bug brush hogs
in 13 to 17 feet of water. The team had a productive
night catching 15 to 20 keepers from their Triton
boat powered by Mercury.
The sibling team of Brent and Ryan Kegly of
Lake Charles, LA bucked the status quo and fshed
multiple locations at a faster pace to secure fourth
place Saturday night. Team Kegly started the night
off cranking Norman DD22s in 10 to 15 feet of
water and then switched to green pumpkin ounce
football jigs. Unlike most of the teams I spoke with,
Brent and Ryan caught over 30 fsh during the night.
Brent reported culling through 20 to 25 keepers to
amass their 19.92 lbs stringer. Team Kegly fshed the
mid lake area of Toledo Bend out of Brents Yamaha
powered Skeeter ZX250. 5th Aaron Wilson/Joe Paddy
- 19.66; 6th Dustin Robinson/William Doodle
Dowden 18.53; 7th Gary Glende/Bobby Feazel
18.27; 8th Tim Merriman/Roger Twig 16.47;
9th Tony Coburn/Shane Cormier 16.34; 10th Brian
Core/ Tom Roberts -15.45.
Up and Coming Outdoors would like to thank all
the anglers who fshed with us this weekend and invite
everyone to fsh our next tournaments on June 16, June
30, July 7, July 28 and August 4 at Big Bass Marina. For

muscADINe - AmerIcAs FIrst grApe
By Bill Talcott
Jasper Master Gardener
Bill Talcott has the largest muscadine vineyard in the state
of Texas, about halfway between Jasper and Kirbyville. All
Jasper master gardener classes get a practice lesson in pruning
every January. Anyone with more questions about growing
muscadine grapes is welcome to call Master Gardener Bill
Talcott at 409-382-3317.
Muscadine, Americas First Grape
How many of you have heard your grandparents talk of making
wine or jelly from the native muscadine grape found in the
surrounding forests in East Texas? Many of you have tried both
wine and jelly, and if you are a native southerner, chances are you
have shaken a vine or two to collect grapes and taste its distinct
sweet favor.
Sometimes referred to as a picnic grape because of its seeds
and thick skins (not something you would want to try in a formal
setting), muscadine is a native grape that once was found hanging
from the forests canopy throughout the Southeastern U.S. Native
Americans and newly arriving Europeans found the grape t from
Texas to Virginia.
Timber management practices over the last 30-40 years have
reduced the once abundant berry, but have no fear, the muscadine
grape still lives in small gardens, landscapes and even vineyards
throughout the south.
Currently there are over 300 different cultivars (species) being
grown in the southeast. This grape known for its thick skin but
unusual favor, and is beginning to get a lot of attention as a
super fruit. Studies by food chemists show that it is high in
phytochemicals, which are anti-cancer fghting mechanisms.
The muscadine grape contains a suffcient amount of resveratrol,
widely thought to be an overall health-promoting compound, and
one of natures richest sources of polyphenolic antioxidants.
How can you grow your own muscadine grapes? The
vines are fairly easy to grow once you get them started. There are
two ways to plant the grape: bare-rooted or a potted plant. Both
ways can be successful if a few guidelines are followed.
Muscadines need full sunlight so pick your site so that it
receives full sun most of the day. Soil should be well-drained sandy
loam. Muscadines do not like to have their feet wet so the soil must
not hold water for even a short period of time.
Soil pH should be around 6. If in doubt, check with your
local extension agent about a soil test (also available at most local
feed stores) which will give you the necessary steps to correct any
soil nutrition defciency.
If planting a potted plant, dig the hole about twice the size of
the container and plant the vine about the same depth as the pot.
If planting a bare rooted plant, dig a trench about 6 deep, lay
the bare roots within the trench, cover and pack the soil around
the roots. Most planting should be done in the dormant season
(winter), but a potted plant can usually be replanted successfully
almost any time of year if watered regularly.
Several things you need to keep in mind when planting
muscadines: they are dioecious, which means they usually have
male and female fowers on different plants, but some plants have
both male and female fowers (self-pollinating). A female plant
would need a pollinator to product fruit. Check the variety of
plants you plan to grow and make sure you have either a self-
fertile plant or plant a male plant close to the female plant
to act as a pollinator.
Muscadines are generally pollinated by the wind so insects do
not play a big role in the pollination process. Planting spacing will
be determined by the amount of space you have in your landscape.
The plants need room to grow and a spacing of at least 10-20 ft
apart is desirable with at least 6 ft. between rows.
They can be put on an arbor, but the maintenance required
in accessing during pruning may limit productivity; therefore
trellising is the more common way of growing the vine. This can
be accomplished by stretching a wire (12 gauge or larger) between

posts about 5 off the ground, which gives the vine something to grow and run on. Planted at the base
of the post give it something to attach to.
Once the plant has reached the top of the post and the wire, the tip should be cut to force the vine
to produce lateral shoots which can be trained to grow both directions along the wire. Train by tying
vines loosely along the wire, keeping any lateral shoots from the ground to the wire pruned off as
the vine grows.
Once the vine has been trained, each dormant season the lateral shoots along the wire should
be pruned back to about 4-6 inches, or 5-6 buds. This allows next years growth to produce fruit for
harvest. Failure to prune each year will result in a reduced crop.
Fertilize by applying a well balance blend of fertilizer (13-13-13) through June, somewhere
between to lb of fertilizer per plant, each month during growing season, in a two foot area
around the plant, increasing the radius as the plant gets older.
Water should be applied on a regular basis after planting. The muscadine is fairly drought
resistant even when we had drought conditions as we did in 2011. The plant will start budding in
early March, start to fower in early May, and fruit begin to ripen in August. One caution is that the
grape does not continue to ripen after it is picked. What you pick is what you get.
Yields are 20 to 70 lbs per plant on a mature 6 year old plant. Plant life expectancies are from 20 to
50+ years. The muscadine is relatively insect and disease resistant so spraying is usually not necessary
unless there is some small leaf insect problem, then a generic insecticide (labeled for edible crops)
can be used.
The muscadine is also a wildlife food so you may have to make necessary precautions against deer,
raccoons, possums and birds. The fruit is formed in clusters and ripens at various intervals; therefore
you may have to pick the fruit over several weeks as each individual grape ripens. Overall the plant is
fairly maintenance free except for annual pruning and general care.
There are many recipes for the muscadine including wine, jelly, jams, and juice. So grow, pick and
enjoy, and who knows you may be the next individual to appear on Dr. Oz giving your testimony
about the beneft of Americas First Grape, the muscadine.

Flutter Spoon And Jig Take
Chapman To Bassmaster Elite Title
When it comes to winning techniques of the Bassmaster Elite pros, you can usually expect the
unexpected, which was exactly how veteran Brent Chapman won the Toledo Bend Battle Elite event on
Toledo Bend June 7-10. The Kansas angler used a
1-oz., 5-in. futter spoon like those made famous on Lake Fork several years ago; what made
Chapmans pattern unusual is that he fshed the spoon in thick timber 25 feet deep and creeled 83
pounds, 9 ounces during the four-day event.
What makes Chapmans win more intriguing is that on Sunday, the fnal day of competition, his
bass stopped hitting the spoon entirely. On the verge of leaving the spot, located several miles south of
the Cypress Bend launch ramp, Chapman made a last desperation cast with a homemade football jig
adorned with a Tightlines UV Hog trailer, and caught a fve-pounder. Half a dozen casts later, he added
a 6-7, and just that suddenly the tournament was his. Those two fsh anchored his 23-11 catch that
day, but no more came from that week-long honey hole or from the spoon.
Cliff Pace fnished in the runnerup position with 79-5, while Marty Robinson claimed third with
77-11. Fourth and ffth were taken by Louisiana pro Greg Hackney, who weighed in 76-1; and Elite
rookie Cliff Prince, who fnished with 69-9.
In a week that saw many of the pros struggling with deep, stubborn bass in 20 to 25 foot depths,
Chapmans heavy spoon pattern appeared to be the anomaly of the week, even though the pros were
keying on huge shad schools rather than actual bass on their electronics. Chapman wasnt fshing
vertically, he was casting and then hopping the spoon back through trees and brush; when he did get
snagged, which was fairly often, he trolled over it and jiggled it free. During the frst three days of the
event, he boated just under 60 pounds of fsh, and he only lost a single spoon the entire week.
Of course, old hands on Toledo and Rayburn can relate to how the bass abruptly stopped hitting
the spoon, since most have experienced this at different times. Many believe bass actually become
accustomed to repeatedly seeing a lure wobbling, hopping, or spinning through their midst and
decide it isnt natural afterall. In Chapmans case, even changing to a usually reliable Carolina rig did
not help.
When I threw the jig out, it was like somebody fipped a switch, he explained afterward. The
Carolina rig had produced a little two-pounder, but that was all and I was getting ready to leave when
I picked up the jig. A fve-pounder hit on the frst cast as the jig was falling. The spoon has always been
my favorite go-to lure in deep water, and Id been using it since practice began, but if I hadnt caught
those fsh that quickly on the jig, Im sure I would have just kept using the spoon in another area.
For years, Chapman has been using Tightlines UV plastics, believing the ultra-violet baits offer
additional visual attraction normal soft plastic lures dont have. He won a Southern Division
Bassmaster Open on Lake Lewisville earlier in 2012 using the UV lures, and also attributes his 5th
place fnish in the 2011 Bassmaster Classic to them.
Despite winning by more than four pounds, however, the Kansas pro had little breathing room
throughout the week. His main challengers included Mississippi pro Cliff Pace, who took the frst day
lead (23-2); Matt Herren; and Marty Robinson. Indeed, when B.A.S.S. cut to the top 12 for Sundays
fnal round, all were within 10 pounds of the leader.
Staying in the hunt and
making the nal cut on
Sunday, Chapmans
spoon bite quit entirely.
Switching to a V&M
football jig, he found
the nal days sh he
needed to win.

Pace, whos one of the best in the business when it comes to deep structure fshing, caught his bass
on a -oz. V&M football jig, alternating occasionally with a
Carolina rigged V&M Super Finesse Worm. He stayed in the mid-lake area fshing the ends of long
ridges where he found bass 24 to 30 feet deep. Keeping his boat in deeper water, he was casting to the
tops of the ridges and crawling the baits down the slope.
I only had three little places where this pattern worked, Pace laughed afterward, so thats where
I stayed. Its a well-known summer pattern on Toledo, but even though I tried it all over in practice, it
never worked anywhere else for me. I probably had less than 10 total bites during the entire three-day
practice, but fortunately, I caught three over six pounds and one over eight during the tournament to
keep me in contention.
Robinson likewise fshed the ends of ridges with a jig, in his case a -oz. Buckeye Mop football
head; he also added a few with a Strike King 6XD crankbait. While Pace worked deep water, however,
the South Carolina angler fshed the far upper end of Toledo where the water had more color and the
bass were 12 to 14 feet deep. Overall, he had about a dozen different spots that held bass; making a
daily milk run, he could catch 15 to 20 fsh each day.
Louisiana pro Greg Hackney, by his own admission, came to Toledo determined to jig bass out of the
deep hydrilla on Toledos lower end. Its a pattern that has won previous tournaments here, but of the
several pros who tried it, only Hackney made it work. Despite catching at least one fsh over six pounds
each day, he fnished more than seven pounds behind in fourth with 76-1. Using his Strike King 1
-oz. Hack Attack Jig with a Rage Craw trailer, he fshed eight different spots, none much larger than
his boat. The hydrilla grew to within about fve feet of the surface, but he concentrated along the
deeper edges or on isolated hydrilla patches in 19 to 20 feet of water.
I needed the fast-falling heavier jig to fre up schools of fsh, and when I got one to bite, I just
threw fsh and rod in the bottom of the boat and grabbed another rod as fast as I could, said Hackney.
I kept fve rods rigged identically on the deck, and once I actually had all fve with bass fopping in
the boat at the same time. Getting another jig down to those fsh as fast as possible was critical.
Still, despite such unusual tactics, the week belonged to Chapman, whose Sunday total of 23-11 was
one of the heaviest of the tournament. It started with a spoon and ended with a jig, a combination
now worth remembering when Toledos bass suddenly and unexpectedly turn stubborn.

Summer fun begins here, on Lake
Sam Rayburn! Add water and youve got
fshing, swimming, waterskiing and all
kinds of fun in the sun. Then there are
picnics, barbeques and setting around the
campfre talking about old times. Forget
the worries for a little while. Sight seeing
can be loads of fun, cruising the lake
checking out the many types of wildlife
that call Sam Rayburn home this time of
year. Now that youve had a small taste of
what you can do, here a few things you
need to bring with you when youre out
and about. Sunscreen is a must - to keep
sunburn down. Have plenty of water and
other liquids to keep stay hydrated. Dont
forget the sunshades and maybe a big hat
to help with the rays. If you fnd yourself
getting hot, a cold towel around the neck
can really help to cool you down. Be
prepared for the sun and heat and keep an
eye on everyone around you!
This time of year can be very exciting
with the schoolies chasing shad
throughout the day. That can be a lot of
fun for everyone. Keep a topwater bait;
like a Pop-R or spoon handy, and be ready
when they bust the surface. The early
morning and late evening bite is very
important, but dont think you cant fnd
fsh on offshore structure in the middle of
the day. You may even fnd a few that will
move up and hide under the lily pads in
the middle of the day. The topwater bite is
just one way to catch a few fsh here on
Big Sam this time of year. Stanley Ribbits
can be an awesome bait to cover the grass
and pads that grow around the edges of
the shore. The grass has been on the thin
side this year but if you can fnd some, the
bass should be there. There are three types
of structure to look for here, Pepper Grass,
Hydrilla and Lily Pads. All of these are bass
magnets this time of year. Now that weve
covered the topwater, lets look at getting in
there with Stanley spinner baits. Chunking
into the pockets around the grass and lily
pads can get some fsh to come out and
play. Or try pulling a few crankbaits in the
same area. If you can fsh slowly, throwing
senkos, or wacky worms in there can get
some nice action.
Now for the guys that want to get down
and dirty, if the grass mats over anywhere
break out the Stanley grass jigs and get
to work. This isnt for everyone and can
be a lot of work pitching the grass edges
till you run across a small group of fsh.
Some guys go out there looking for 5 bites
a day but they are looking for big fsh.
Remember jigs catch big fsh, and thats
what a lot of folks are looking for. Ok, now
for the deep plastic baits, big worms and
creature baits on a Carolina or Texas rig
off long points and humps. Working water
depths from 10 to 25 feet off the edges is
a lot work. Finding bait or some cover the
bass are using to hide is the frst thing to
look for. Now you get to work and see if the
fsh are home and in the mood to play.
Crappie fshing on Sam Rayburn can be
a lot of fun with some slabs going as much
as 2 lbs. Crappie fshing is for anglers of
all ages and skill levels. These little critters
are about the best tasting fsh you can get.
Fishing around the bridges under the shade
can put a few fsh in the box. The other way
is to fsh the stumps on the lake. Even better,
put out a few brush tops around some
of these stumps. Yahoo! Youve created
a brand new fshin spot. Brush piles are
very important to fshing for crappie at
this time of year and learning how to build
them and getting them to work is tricky. If
you build them close to trees or stumps you
can just tie up and fsh. If youre building
them in open water you have to use your
trolling motor to hold you in position.
Now, for the guys that dont have a trolling
motor you have to be very careful because
getting the anchor hooked into the brush
pile is bad business. Not only will it mess up
the fshing, but when you start to haul up
the anchor, you tear up the pile and make
it useless. What you want to do is anchor
up wind, say about 50 ft. or more, make
sure the anchor is holding and youre not
dragging it into the pile. Then drift back to
the pile. If you swing around a lot you can
get one of the mushroom anchors and let it
out straight down to help slow the drifting.
It wont tear things up like the ones with
the blades and will usually help slow the
swinging around. I have put two of them
down with one on each side to help hold
the boat still. Remember it isnt any fun
to build a good brush pile and then tear
it up the frst time you use it, I know. I had
some good piles out there and came back
to fnd that someone didnt use his head
and destroyed them.
For those that dont have a boat and
would like to do a little Crappie fshing
I have a new Pontoon boat that can
handle up to 8 anglers. It has a changing
room and port-o-potty. Grab the kids,
your friends, and come out and have
some fun. Ive been fshing with a young
couple for a few years now they brought
another couple with them, split the price
and saved a chuck of money.
We have plenty of shade to get out of
the sun so get your trips booked. Come on,
get in on the fun.
HOT TIPS are generally free at the
local tackle stores.
HOT and SLOW for some - that
describes the fshing in July! One time
you go out you may have a great day
fshing and the next time not so hot.
BASS: Early morning you can
catch fsh on a Yellow Magic around
the needle grass.
Also, as the sun comes up fsh a Texas
rigged red bug or plum apple worm.
If you can fnd some hydrilla in 9- 15
foot of water you may hit a gold mine
of fsh. Fish a Santone jig in the grass
or a Texas rig worm. Look for lily pads
and throw a Scum Frog, there are some
nice fsh hanging out there. The local
tackle stores have a good selection of
these lures so stop by, check it out and
see whats new!!
CRAPPIE: The crappie have slowed
down as the water has warmed, deeper
brush piles are your best bet for catching
crappie. Shiners are working best.
CATFISH: The catfsh are biting good
- over your favorite chum. Also noodles
baited with live perch are catching good
cats. Mike & Cathy

SUMMERTIME FUN ON THE BEND
plus VITAL SPONSOR SUPPORT
by Pro Guide, Joe Joslin
Hello, outdoor lovers and anglers. July brings one of the biggest
holidays of the year, especially when it comes to the number
of people who use the lake the week of July 4th. The Fourth,
as it is often called, is a day when we Americans celebrate our
independence from our Mother Country, Great Britain. Like
every freedom we have as American citizens, many of our fellow
countrymen died for us to have such awesome freedoms. The older
I get the more I realize how precious these freedoms are to each of
us. May we never forget and may we never take these for granted.
Happy Birthday America! We are blessed!
THE SONG CONTINUES: Things continue better on My Favorite
Fishing Hole. One theme I have been writing about the past few
months is the improvements I have been observing around the
Toledo Bend lake area. As we head into the heart of summer I
can see no reason to be less optimistic as lake use is defnitely
increased with high numbers of families that are fshing,
camping, boating, swimming and skiing. I also observed high
numbers of pontoons and jet skis who are making good use of
sandy beaches all around the lake. This has to be good for the
local economy as there have been several occasions the past few
weeks where we have had to wait several minutes to gas up as well
as to stand in line at local bait and tackle stores to check out.
This report had to be submitted to editors prior to July 4th week
but my guess is that retail traffc will be up this year over the same
week last year.
We continue to have good lake levels which makes boaters feel
much more secure when navigating big and beautiful Toledo
Bend. Lower gas prices also is a huge plus to the over-all outlook
of local economies. Summer 2012 looks very promising.
PRO ANGLERS AND SPONSORS
I have made most of my living since 1998 as a pro angler which
has been challenging as well as a rewarding experience. One
thing I realized early on was the importance of major sponsors.
While I do fsh some area bass tournaments each year and love
to compete, I have put most of my efforts these 14 years on our
guide service, outdoor writing and promoting of our sponsors.
I have discovered that there are ways to make a living as a pro
angler without having to leave your family for months at a time
and log 100k miles a year on your tow vehicle with endless nights
in motels and camp grounds. Those guys who solely tournament
fsh for a living, year after year, have my highest respect. I know
several of them personally and they sacrifce so much to pursue
their dreams. Pro anglers who fsh the BASS Elite and FLW Tour
spend $125,000 each year in entry fees and expenses. 90% of these
cannot compete year after year without major sponsors. Some
attain many of their goals while others are disappointed and have
to fnd another way to make a living as there can only be a certain
number (top 20-25%) of tournament anglers who fnish high
enough in the events to pay the bills. One thing that has helped
the upper level tier of pro bass anglers is the increase of money
that major corporations are now investing in competitive bass
fshing. This increase in sponsor dollars has made it possible for
more pro tournament anglers to make a living doing what they
love to do.
While I basically approach being a pro angler from a different
direction, one thing we have in common is the importance of
sponsors. Good sponsors are hard to come by and in the tough
economical season we have been in for 3-4 years, they have been
even more important yet harder to acquire. Yes, and yet even
tougher to retain year after year. Getting major sponsors are not
free gifts and involves a 4-letter word... WORK! Along with a boat
sponsor, a tow vehicle or truck sponsorship are the two most
diffcult to attain because of the costs involved. Tow vehicles/
truck sponsorships may be the toughest to land. It took me
nine years to get a truck sponsorship which fnally happened in
2007 when Toyota introduced the full sized Tundra which is an
awesome tow vehicle. Lake Charles Toyota(my local dealership)
and owner Philip Tarver were vital in making this happen for me.
Sponsorships are all about people and relationships and you have
to have people who believe in you and what you can do for their

The D-Shad is a new breed of soft plastic jerk bait. It has a
streamlined body designed to give that side-to-side twitching
action, but the tail is thicker and heavier so when you kill the
bait it sinks level and gives a little shimmy.
It will work great by itself weightless for twitching, but also
give it a try on your Carolina Rig, or behind your
Chatterbaits or Scroungers. However you use the
new D-Shad you are sure to catch them!

Wells & Cooper win Bass N Bucks
Summer Series kick-off on Sam Rayburn
By Patty Lenderman
Bass N Bucks kicked off their Sam Rayburn Summer Series June 9 at the Umphrey Family Pavilion.
The fsh were hard to fgure out for most of the competitors, but Jason Wells and Vic Cooper put it all
together for a dominating win.
The morning started out cool and calm with overcast skies. By afternoon temperatures were
tickling the 90 degree mark and the cloud cover totally dissipated with relieving spurts of wind.
Fishing has been tough on Big Sam for weeks, and there is no apparent sign that the big bite is back
quite yet. Anglers worked hard for their catches and surprising weights took top spots on the leader
board.
Jason Wells and Vic Cooper, 2011 Summer Series Anglers of the Year brought in the heaviest sack by
far with an 18.26 pound limit. It was tough out there, the team explained. We probably didnt boat
two limits worth all day. They started their day heading to deep lily pads on secondary points. Using
shad colored Badon-ka-donk topwater baits, they managed a small limit. Once that bite played out,
we headed to a few brush tops using Carolina rigs. It was there, in 22, that Vic caught their big bass
on an Ole Monster worm in their new color California 420 on Lews rods and reels and made their frst
cull. Her air bladder was full, and we didnt have a needle on us to relieve her. They fagged down a
friend, Scooter Clark, who loaned them one to let the air out of her. We culled a couple of more times
after that then our day was done. Their kicker weighed in at 5.84 pounds, just overtaking the closest
competitor for the Big Bass race by .02 lbs. Their total weight gave them a 1st place fnish leading the
pack by more than fve pounds. Wed like to thank Town & Country Marine, AFI Unlimited and Shelby
Savings Bank for their support.
Bill Burns does not normally fsh by himself, but his partner Corey Stanley could not make it to this
tournament. I started out with a Zara Spook in shallow water with pepper grass. That yielded him
three good keepers, but he had to switch gears to fnd the rest of his limit. I decided to head to the
north end of the lake and work brush piles on my way back to the weigh in. He allowed 15 minutes
per brush pile then moved on to the next. I probably hit 25 piles or so. It was a fun day, but I missed
my partner being there. His limit weighed in at 13.13 pounds for a 2nd place fnish. Id like to thank
my wife for her support for me to fsh these tournaments.
3rd place winner Joe Leyton said he had a lot of fun on the lake even though fshing was tough. I
had about two miles of shallow grassy shoreline picked out to hammer. My frst fsh bit at 8:00, and I
lost her. Probably would have weighed 7 or 8 pounds. He used a combination of frogs and swim baits
and had all of the fsh he weighed by 10am. One shy of a limit, his creel weighed in at 12.06 pounds
which included a 4.88 lb kicker. Id really like to thank my wife Rochelle, shes a great supporter for
me to fsh. Id also like to thank Robin and Stephen Johnston at Needmore Tackle.
Rounding out the top fve includes 4th place Dwight Rose & Jason French with 11.77 lbs and 5th
place winners Mark & Gay Norton with 10.64 lbs.
We decided to have a separate Summer Series for each lake, Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend. Also
to make it more effcient and convenient for our participants we scheduled them back to back on the

Going into July were
almost three feet below
high pool with plenty of
water and the lake is in
great shape. If the lake
gets to 168 msl, which is
four feet below high pool, SRA will cease generating.
Summer arrived early this year and in fact, we
recorded the warmest spring season on record. The
record was shattered by six degrees. You have to wonder
if there may be something to all this global warming. It
looks like we might be in for a long hot summer.
As most people know the B.A.S.S. Elite series was held
on Toledo Bend in early June and the top anglers caught
the majority of their fsh in deep water. The winner, Brent
Chapman, hauled in 83.9 lbs in four days throwing a 1
oz. futter spoon and a jig in 25 to 30 feet of water.
Most fsh caught this time of year will be caught in
deep water, other than early morning, late evening or at
night. Your sonar is your best friend in locating fsh when
they move deep.
As reported in prior reports, an understanding of the
thermo cline will help you catch more fsh.
The thermo cline is a thin layer of water in a lake
that is sandwiched between the upper layer of water
(the epilimnion) and the lower, colder layer of water
(hypolimnion). Between these two layers you have a thin
layer in which the water temperature drops substantially.
This is known as the thermocline. Below this layer the
water has very little concentrations of oxygen. Fish will
suspend just above the thermocline where the water is
the coolest and has plenty of oxygen. Wind speeds and
ambient temperature readings have a large effect at what
depth the thermocline is located. A deep diving crank
bait that runs along the thermocline can be the key to
catching bass this time of year.
Early morning, late evening and on cloudy days work
the edges of the pepper grass, duckweed, and lily pads
growing close to deep water with top water plugs, buzz
baits, spinner baits, frogs, shallow diving crank baits,
traps, soft plastics and fnesse plastics. When the sun gets
overhead and the shallow bite slows down, back out to
deeper water and work deep diving crank baits, spoons,
tail spinners and Texas or Carolina rigged plastics.
Nighttime is the right time to catch numbers and size
as the bass feed more at night and the water cools down.
Large noisy top water plugs, buzz baits, spinner baits and
large dark plastics work well.
The White Bass will be moving all over the lake
this time of year chasing shad. Watch for schooling
fsh along boat lanes, timber lines, main lake points
and fats close to the river channel. Keep a Rat-L-Trap,
shallow diving crank bait or top water plug handy
when they start schooling. When they go down, throw a
slab spoon or tail spinner.
Crappie are holding in 12 to 25 ft of water over and in
brush tops and main lake humps.

BASS ~ Good. Early
on topwater baits like
a Tiny Torpedo, clear
in color, around the
shoreline grass. After
the topwater bite dies,
move out to 18-25 ft. of water and throw a Talon 3/4oz.
football head jig in the 330 color with a Zoom speed
tail worm trailer in junebug or you can go with a 12
redbug worm Texas rigged with a 1 oz. weight fshed
on a TFO rod and 20# fuoro carbon line. The night
time bite is excellent on big worms in black neon or
black grape colors.
CRAPPIE ~ Slow. Fish are being caught over brush
in 20-30 ft. on shiners.
** Look for schooling fsh during the mid-day time.
Could be Black Bass, but lots of whites and bar fsh.
Use a topwater or Little George.

Joejoslinoutdoors@yahoo.com 337-463-3838 409-565-1288
Hello, Anglers. As
we are now into July
My Favorite Fishing
Hole looks a whole
lot different than it did
this time last year. We
basically still have a full lake (just under 170) with
plenty of grass, both shoreline as well as submerged
vegetation. The summer patterns are multiple and
also very different.
BASS: Night fshing is on the table as a lot of quality
bass being caught after dark with buzz baits, Stanley
Ribbits plus Texas rigged soft plastics including 6 inch
Berkley Power Lizards and 10 Power Worms. Top
night colors are plum and red bug (on bright nights
will big moon) and black/blue tail on dark nights.
Daytime patterns include topwater early and late
but very early and very late are best. My suggested
topwater tools are Norman Pro Pop(an awesome cost
friendly popper), Yellow Magic (everything magical
but the cost...it is a good bait), Pop R and Chug Bug.
We are also fnding some schooling fsh that have been
unusually aggressive with mid-morning schooling
times most days. Other patterns include soft plastics in
both mid and deep areas. In the mid-depths (8 to 16)
I like to work main creek and main lake points with
submerged hydrilla. On cloudy days this pattern can
last till almost noon but on sunny days it slows around
9 a.m. You then need to think deeper anywhere from
18 to 30 ft with deep diving crankbaits(DD22s), TX rig,
Stanley Football Jig (1/2 or 3/4 oz) or Carolina Rig
with Havoc Bottom Hopper or Power Worms.
This time of year I will always have a jigging
spoon and drop shot tied on. I am using the spoon
for several applications including schooling bass
as well as fshing for suspended schools of yellows,
whites, striper and largemouth that I fnd along main
creeks and the Sabine River bed. We also use the drop
shot almost every day to catch bass in 15 to 30 feet.
Most fsh now are no deeper than 30 ft because of the
thermocline that has developed with water temps in
mid-to upper 80s.
CRAPPIE/BREAM/YELLOWS: A brief report for each
has the crappie holding on brush at end of deep piers
and docks as well as man-made brush on points and
drop offs. Also under bridges early, late and night. Live
shiners and jigs are catchinem. Yellow Bass are both on
the main river as well as on main creeks and cau usually
be found underneath or close to schooling largemouth
and will hit both tailspinners (Road Runners by
Blakemore) as well as jigging spoons. The bream mostly
have moved deeper and can be caught in 15 to 20 on
crickets, Berkley Power Maggots and earthworms.

The frst of the Bass N Bucks Toledo Bend Summer Series 2012 kicked off at Big Bass Marina on
June 10. As each team brought their creel to the scales, the top mark kept increasing until Joe Setina
and Lamonte Loyd brought their 25.07 lb limit in to win 1st place anchored by the big bass of the
tournament!
It was a hot day on the lake but the nice breeze under the shaded dock at Big Bass Marina provided
sanctuary for everyone present. It was a great day to be on the lake as several chunks were caught and
brought in.
For Joe Setina and Lamonte Loyd, the plan was simple: Our goal was to catch a bunch of big bass!
They had eight different spots picked out to hit in deep water, and as they started their milk run, it
started out a little slow. We caught a couple in our frst spot, but it didnt take long to decide to head
to our next area. They were fshing offshore structure such as humps, drop-offs and points in depths
up to 24. Their three main lures of choice were jigs, Carolina rigs and crank baits. Our second fsh
was our big one, fshing with a jig about 8am. Their big one won Big Bass honors weighing in at
9.08 lbs! We wrapped up a limit pretty quick after that, and kept moving to some of our other spots.
We found the Elite guys on some of them, so left those areas alone. They culled six times throughout
the day, ever increasing their weight. Most of our fsh were caught on the Strike King 6XD crank bait.

We have a lot of confdence in this bait. We have fnished well in many tournaments on it. Their plan
worked out well, winning the tournament by well over four pounds. Wed like to thank Strike King
and Joe Tex for their help and support.
The day started out pretty slow for 2nd place anglers Johnny Franks and Chet Slayton. We didnt catch
any at our frst couple of spots. Around mid morning we pulled up to a point just off of a creek channel
and caught a limit that weighed around 15 pounds. They were using ounce Strike King football head
jigs with green pumpkin Rage Craw trailers in 25 of water. We kept moving, and hit about four more
holes. They culled four more times before their bite quit again. The frst and last parts of the day we
didnt catch anything. It was all from mid morning to just after noon. Their limit weighed 20.84 lbs for
a 2nd place fnish. They would like to thank Sun Tubular Services, BioBor, and BLV Enterprises.
Keith Combs and Jennifer Reid teamed up to win 3rd place overall with 19.66 lbs. It was a good
day! We caught quite a few fsh. Their bait of choice was a Zoom Old Monster green pumpkin worm,
Texas rigged. We started out in a good spot, then left it to try another. Greg Hackney with the Elite
tournament was there so we kept moving to try a few other areas. We ended up going back to our
original hole and fnished our limit. They were pleased with the quality bites they got which included
their 5.60 lb kicker. Jennifer is a great partner!

Area Club Updates
Louis Lee continues his winning ways with another 1st place win in the
Many Bass Clubs June 2012 tournament. Lee, fshing north near Solans camp,
bagged a very impressive 5 fsh limit weighing 18.59 lbs. Lee caught his fsh
using deep diving crank baits and Carolina rigged lizards in 15 to 22 feet of
water. Lee also claimed Big Bass honors with a 5.07 lb lunker. Jimmy Campbell
fnished in second place with a fve fsh limit weighing 13.78 lbs. Derek Mong
was the third place winner with a 5 fsh limit weighing 13.37 lbs.
A total of 76 fsh were caught weighing 163 lbs for an average fsh weight of
2.10 lbs.
Two things that are
extremely important and
much too often taken
for granted: infatable
life jackets and sun
protection. A life time non
wearer of life jackets,
I now wear an infatable
life jacket all the time
Im on the water, with no
discomfort they are very
comfortable. Second, sun
protective covering and
sun screen - wear it!
For the May tournament, we had 19 teams comprised of 34 members and a guest that weighed in 67 bass
weighing a total of 164.05 pounds, which is an average weight of 2.45 lbs.
Brian Carpenter fshed all by himself, possibly to
keep his honey hole a secret... he brought in 14.57
lbs with no help from a teammate to take frst place.
He won the Lews rod and reel door prize from the
club as well! Nice payday for Brian. Husband and wife
team Buddy and Sharon Ellis raided a few good spots
and put 13.83 lbs on the scales for second place.
Doug Smith showed his usual strength, capturing
third place with 11.97 lbs, fshing with guest Jeff
Smith. Jim McDonald and Stan Verret stepped up for
their second payday of the season at fourth place
with 11.07 lbs. Cliff Callender may have been in 8th
place overall, but he took home money for Big Bass
of the tournament, 5.61 lbs, the same amount second
place took... and he didnt have to share since he
fshed alone!
As for our Top Six, we have a new leader! Brians
stringer put him on top of the hill, in the current AOY
spot. Bubba Courts took Brians spot at second. Buddy
Ellis moved from sixth to third. Steven Desormeaux
stayed strapped in at fourth. Jim McDonald stays in
the Top Six at ffth place, and Leslie Woodall made a
huge jump from eleventh place to sixth!
Remember to thank our sponsors for their donations
to our club by visiting them and patronizing their
businesses! These sponsors include Simon Outftters,
R1-Bass, Daleys Hunt and Fish, and Bass Kandi.
Speaking of Bass Kandi, for those anglers that did not
receive their Bass Kandi lures in the April tournament,
please let Eric Van Horn know - you can pick them up
at the next tournament.
The next tournament is June 27th and 30th at Six
Mile Public Ramp on Toledo Bend. The tournament
hours are 6am - 2pm. NOTE THE 2PM END TIME;
the summer heat can be brutal, so were going to let
everyone wrap it up an hour earlier than usual.
Be safe out there & we hope to see you at the ramp!

Littleton & Chambers bring in over 27 lbs
to win Bass Champs season finale on Rayburn
By Patty Lenderman
On the eve of summer and embarking on hurricane season, Bass Champs East Region wrapped
up their regular season on Sam Rayburn June 16, 2012 at the Umphrey Family Pavilion. Many big
bass were brought to the scales and several good stringers were seen, but Daniel Chambers and Todd
Littleton was way ahead of the 181 contending teams bringing in a 27.11 lb sack to win over $20,000.
Final points were tallied of all fve tournaments, determining the winners of the Angler of the Year race.
The morning started out cool and calm, but gulf weather patterns were trying to move in causing
isolated showers in the afternoon and increased wind. Rayburn anglers have been on a dry spell for
good catches, so maybe the big drop in the barometer helped with their catches.
As the frst teams began making their way to the scales, Danny Cherry and Buddy Bumstead
established a good mark on the leaderboard with their 23.97 lb sack and their kicker lead in the Big
Bass race weighing 8.46 lbs. Right behind them their Big Bass was challenged when Ed Pulda put his
biggest on the scales that tallied 8.32 lbs. No other teams had sacks weighing over 20 pounds until
Daniel Chambers and Todd Littleton brought their catch in.
They were frst spied coming up to the holding tanks, each holding a side of this obviously heavy
sack. When the water and fsh were poured out at the check in sinks, they knew they didnt have a fsh
that would take over Big Bass. All fve chunks were weighed and the scales locked in at 27.11 lbs, far
ahead of the pack for a dominating win.
We didnt get to do any pre-fshing. All the time we have spent on the lake has been taking our
families out and having fun. They headed to main lake points using crank baits and Carolina rigs.
We caught a lot of two pounders right off then we lucked up and caught a six pounder. From then
on it just kept getting better. By 8:45 we had a limit in the boat. When one spot would slow down,
wed head to another one. They kept with their same pattern all day and hit fve selected points. We
caught about three or four fsh from each spot and had several quality bites. We did lose one other
that felt pretty nice. As it turned out they didnt need the fsh that got away, winning the tournament
by nearly four pounds. Bass Champs presented them with the guaranteed $20,000 1st place check, and
they added to their winnings using the Sure Life product in their livewell for an additional $200. Wed
like to thank H & W Marine, TRITON boats, Mercury and Kistler rods.
Danny Cherry and Buddy Bumstead won 2nd place with their 23.87 lb limit. Starting out using
topwater lures, they boated one keeper then quickly switched gears heading to deeper water. We hit

brush piles about 25 deep with Texas and Carolina rigs at a spot we found last weekend. Not catching
many keepers, one by one they worked on putting a limit together. With four in their livewell, Danny got
their big bite. We knew it was a good fsh, and it fought coming in. They had a marker buoy thrown
out and the fsh wrapped around it and got hung. Thankfully we got her in. It made our limit. Cherry
and Bumstead only caught six keepers all day, but they were good quality fsh. They won $3,000 for their
2nd place fnish and would like to thank Jordan Marine, Bass Cat boats and Castaway rods.
3rd place was won by Nick LeBrun and Chris Lee with 18.77 lbs. We started out in shallow water,
but were only catching little fsh. Around 10am we went deeper, 10-15 around offshore structure. We
werent catching a lot of fsh one here, one there but they were good keeper fsh. Nick gestured
toward Chris and added: I have the privilege of fshing with a Ninja. He has a really neat hookset!
They enjoyed a $2,000 payday.
Several bass in the eight pound class were brought in and the Big Bass race was tight. Bret Stafford
caught the biggest of the tournament weighing 8.53 lbs, anchoring a 4th place overall win for him
and his partner Phil Marks. It was our frst fsh of the day. She was in about 8 of water, and I caught
her on a Series 5 Strike King crank bait. We were fshing a secondary point just outside of some baby
willow trees. They won $1,000 for that single catch plus another $1,200 for their 4th place fnish.
They also cashed in on the Costa Del Mar and Line-X bonuses for another $450.
It has been a good run for Anglers of the Year as each team accumulated points in each of the fve
tournaments in the East Region. Cory Rambo and Rusty Clark have been staying strong and steady,
consistently widening the gap and surging farther and farther ahead in points after each event. As the
2012 Bass Champs East Region Anglers of the Year, their entries will be waived for the 2013 season.
Congratulations to them!
Anyone who has entered all fve events in any region qualifes to fsh all four
championships! 1st place winner at each championship will receive a Skeeter ZX20 bass boat powered
by a Yamaha 225 SHO, equipped with Minn Kota and Humminbird a $55,000 retail value!
On another note, each year Chad Potts and Jeff Welch hold a Presidents Challenge tournament
between each other. This challenge is now in its 10th year. While Chad has a few wins behind him,
Jeff has held the trophy for most of the challenges. The golden icon sits in the winners offce as a
reminder of Champion status from one challenge to the next. For the past four years running it has
been in Jeffs offce. This year Chad regained the trophy to be displayed in his offce. Rumor has it that
several pictures were made of Chad with his trophy and put in many places around the Bass Champs
complex. Oh, its on now! Jeff declared. Ill have that trophy back in its rightful offce next year!
Bass Champs television shows air on the WFN Network. Dont miss a single one! Also stay tuned to
www.BassChamps.com for the 2013 season schedules. Join Bass Champs as they host the 7th Annual
Berkley Big Bass event on Lake Fork October 20-21.

Impressive 10 + pounder that Mark caught on Toledo. Seems
that these nice catches never come on tournament days any
more!!
This is the frst trotlining experience for Carson Downey on
the left and Jacob Bowman on the right. They were extremely
excited and cannot wait to run trotlines again on their next trip
to Toledo Bend.
James Frazier, also known as Tater went fshing with his
paw paw and on this trip, he caught the biggest bass that
he has ever caught!! This is a great way to start summer
vacation.
You may recognize this happy man Scott at Pleasure
Bend General Store on Toledo Bend couldnt take watching
everyone else getting to go fshing and played a little
hooky himself. My lovely bride and I fshed with Stephen
Johnston (Guide). Went on a crappie trip and happened to
catch a 6 1/2 bass. Caught it on an ultra light rod with 6
lb. test line. What a blast.
Tommy Driscoll is proudly showing his latest catch on Sam
Rayburn!! This is a NEW Junior Lake Record Fresh Water Drum
it weighed 1.14 lbs.

Curtis Bailey from Jasper, Texas
just recently returned from Alberta,
Canada from a week long Black Bear
Hunt. Burnt Lake Outftters was his
guide during this once in a lifetime
adventure. He brought home two
Black Bears that he killed with a
Mathews bow. The bears were both
just over 5 feet in size.
Trey and friends went to Sam Rayburn to Noodle the
old fashioned way - by hand! Here are two of their great
catches, a 65 lb and a 15 lb catfsh. They caught them near
Colemans Cove then brought them to Powell Park for a
picture of their success.

Up & Coming Outdoors night tournament
One Spot One Kill Cline and Cooley Win
One spot seems to be the reoccurring theme of the 2012 Up and Coming Outdoors Night Series on Toledo
Bend. The June 16th event held at Big Bass Marina saw two of the top three teams catch their stringers while
staying in one location all night. Tournament director Travis Merritt reported that the 59 boat feld took to
Toledo Bend with little to no wind and clear to partly cloudy skies at 7:00 PM but the dark moon created some
lulls in the fshing throughout the night. Many teams commented on a lack of bites for the frst few hours
after dark Merritt said, but big fsh and big bags were caught none the less by the time the 3:00 AM weigh
rolled around.
The team of Connan Cline and Joe Cooley took frst place honors and $2,690.00 for their fve bass limit
weighing 26.15 pounds that included the Busch Beer Big Bass of the Tournament. Cline and Cooley fshed
the south end of Toledo Bend in a Mercury powered Triton. Connan and Joe reported catching their fsh in
16 to 22 feet of water along a ridge. Like the winners from the June 2 event, Cline and Cooley stayed in one
location all night but unlike Thibodeaux and Bennett they caught over twenty keepers. Cline and Cooley fshed
Carolina and Texas rigged worms in black emerald and candy bug. The Busch Big Bass weighing 8.14 was
caught on a Texas rigged candy bug worm with a 3/8 ounce weight. Colley reported catching most of their fsh
between 7:00 and 10:00 PM and then from 1:00 AM to 2:00 AM. The team won $2,200.00 for frst place and
$290.00 for big bass plus the $200.00 cash Busch Beer Big Bass Bonus and a prize package from Busch Beer.
Congratulations to Connan and Joe for their victory.
The second place team of Robert and Jason Craft fshed three locations in the midlake area of Toledo Bend
to put together a nice stringer of bass weighing 21.88 pounds. The brothers from Leesville and Anacoco fshed
black emerald worms with 3/8 ounce weights around shallow humps. The team reported catching six keepers
casting up to fve feet of water and working the big worms down the drops on humps. Team Craft fshed from
a Yamaha powered Ranger to win $930.00 and moved up to ffth place in the team of the year standings. Like
the winners, Jason and Robert did not catch any fsh for the frst couple of hours after dark.
Big black worms were also the key to success for the third place team of Mike Ingram and Jacob Johnson
of Lake Charles, Louisiana. Mike and Jacob fshed Texas and Carolina rigged black worms in 12 to 25 feet
of water. Unlike the frst and second place teams, Ingram and Johnson mixed in a little crankbait action to
secure third place with 20.43 pounds of bass. Jacob reported catching two of their six keepers on a Strike King
5 XD in citrus shad. Mike and Jacob fshed one location all night in the midlake area from their Yamaha
powered Stratos. Mikes blue heeler, who accompanied them for the evening, added some excitement to
the night by stepping on the trolling motor button just to make sure they were still awake. The trio (dog
included) won $730.00 for their night of fshing on Toledo Bend. Rounding out the top ten for the night were
Tony Clemens/Robert More 19.14 in 4th, 5th Tommy Rascoe/Alton Powell 17.23, 6th Michael Page/
Johnny Ford 16.82, 7th Tim Merriman/Roger Twigg 14.24, 8th Pete Lowe/Jerry Strother 14.18,
9th Shane Rogers/John Deon 13.66, 10th Cole Stewart/Rustin McClelland 13.42.
Cole Stewart and Rustin McClelland took over the points lead in the Team of the Year race with their
tenth place fnish Saturday night. The team has 290 points followed by Thomas Jordan and Keith Shell
288, Tim Merriman/Roger Twigg 287, Tony Coburn/Shane Cormier 285, Jason Craft/Robert Craft 284.
The 2012 Up and Coming Night Series Team of the Year will receive free entry into the 2013 Night Series,
boat number one for every tournament of 2013, and prizes from our sponsors. We would like to thank
all of our sponsors for this year: Busch Beer, RealTree Energy drinks, V&M Baits, Cyclone Lures, Big Bass
Marina, Southwest Beverage Company, Fontenot and Fontenot Law Firm, ProScreen, and Power Pole
Shallow Water Anchors.
Up and Coming Outdoors will host its next night series event on Toledo Bend June 30 at Big Bass Marina.

19th Annual Dr. Sheltons Totally
Awesome Fishing Adventure
By Gay Norton
Cassels-Boykin hosted another event for the Dr. Sheltons Totally Awesome Fishing Adventure on
May 26th. This event is not just a fshing tournament, but an opportunity for family and friends to
invest themselves into a greater cause. This tournament began when Dr. Bill Shelton, a radiation
oncologist at the Arthur Temple Sr. Region Cancer Center saw a need for some type of event that
would help raise money for the patients of the center. Therefore, the money that is raised is donated
to Memorial Health Systems in Lufkin to help cancer patients pay for transportation and medications
and any other needs that they may have.
This year the event was held on Memorial Day weekend. Tournament directors Jeff & Heather
Buchanan, wanted the event to be even more than a fshing tournament, they wanted it to be a family
event; therefore, they added the Dr. Bills Kidz Zone.
The Kidz Zone was a huge success! The kids and families started coming down the hill from the
campsites around 10:40 with huge smiles on their faces and ready to play! What was really cool is that
many of them were wearing their Dr. Shelton shirts from last year. We couldnt have done the Kidz
Zone without A-1 Party Rental because they sponsored the entire thing stated Buchanan. They provided
cotton candy and snow-cone machines with the ingredients, they provided a bounce house and an
obstacle course. We also had the Wilmons, who do exceptional face painting, come out and help as well.
What was also such a huge excitement was that Chick-fl-A donated a huge stuffed Chick-fl-A
Cow. EVERY child who came to the tournament that day had their name put into the free drawing.
The little girl that won spent the rest of the day carrying the cow like it was the greatest thing on
earth! She loved it and enjoyed playing with it.
Many thanks go out to the overwhelming generosity of our community because they are the ones
who helped raise nearly $10,000 to help support the local, indigent cancer patients:
A-1 Party Rental - donated the Kidz Zone
Brookshire Brothers - donated BBQ and supplies
Port-A-Cool - donated (2) industrial size fans to cool the pavilion.
Wilmons Face Painting - donated their time and supplies
Coca-Cola - provided all drinks for the day
Chick-fl-A - donated the fshermens dinner and the stuffed cow

Of course the event COULD NOT have been possible without the help of our many, many
volunteers!!! All of them went above and beyond the call of duty and worked very hard to make the
tournament a success.
Jerry & Lynda Crain, tournament anglers, came up to the weigh-in and said, we are gonna
need 2 bags. Everyone thought they were joking, but when they weighed their days limit, it was
an impressive bag of fsh that weighed 20.14 lbs. This bag of fsh earned them 1st place of the
tournament and also 2nd place big bass honors with their nice 6.98 pounder. Their earnings for the
day was $2,917.20
Johnny DeWald and Brandon Walden won the Big Bass honors with their nice Rayburn sow that
weighed 7.54 lbs. They earned $595 for this fsh.
Three places were paid for the top three big bass brought in to the tournament. John Hatton and
Marc Shaw got the last of the big bass checks winning $238 with their 5.81 lb catch. It also helped to
anchor their 7th place overall fnish.
The raffe also went exceptionally well. As a result of everyones excitement about the raffe items,
all of the tickets were sold and we had to fnd more because people still wanted to buy them up until
the drawing. Many businesses in Lufkin and Zavalla were more than willing to donate to support Dr.
Sheltons tournament:
Best Buy: iPad3 with Apple Air printer KSWP: 4 tickets to Schlitterbahn
Blueberry Bogg: 2 custom made cedar benches Beards Fine Jewelry: Nominations Necklace made in Italy
Buchanan Realty: Free weekend stay at a waterfront lakehouse
This family event was a huge success. For more information or to fnd out how you can become
involved in next years tournament, call Jeff or Heather Buchanan, Directors at (936)632-7700.
Having fun on the equipment that A-1
Party Rental donated for the Kidz Zone.
The Kidz Zone was fun!!!

To compete in bass tournaments it is essential to have a good
grasp of fshing techniques at different times of the year. Donnie
& Juanita Robinson are a couple who have a great grasp on
catching bass no matter what the lake or the weather throws their
way. Winning the Southeast Regions opening tournament of the
season on Sam Rayburn in January; and this weekend - they took
1st Place at Toledo Bend in the fnal tournament of the season!!!
From cold water to hot water, shallow water to deep water, and
everything in-between the Robinsons are more than capable.
Bringing a nice bag of summer-time fsh to the scales weighing
13.56 pounds enabled Donnie & Juanita to claim their second
victory of the year. Another trait the Robinsons portray is care for
the fsh they catch. The weigh-in bag they presented at weigh-in
held nice cold water with Catch & Release formula added to
give their fsh an excellent chance at survival once returned to the
waters of Toledo Bend. Thank you to Donnie & Juanita for your
experience and professionalism.
Another couple always capable of winning a tournament that they
enter is Johnny & Jolyne George. Their stringer of fsh pushed the
scales to 11.02 pounds to claim 2nd place. Johnny & Jolyne missed
the opening tournament of the 2012 Southeast Regions season but
came back to fnish the year in the top ten. We expect they will be
contenders at this years C.A.S.T. Classic Championship in Del Rio,
Texas in October. Congratulations guys, well see yall in south Texas!!
Taking down 3rd place were a couple who are no strangers to
fshing C.A.S.T. but they are new to being married. We want to
congratulate Mr. & Mrs. Dean & Debbie Perkins on their recent
wedding, many well wishes from everyone! Dean & Debbie
brought a nice sack of bass in weighing 9.41 pounds. Not a huge
bag but under the tough conditions that Toledo Bend presented
our couples, very respectable! After all, there were three major
professional tournaments on the lake in the weeks prior to our
scheduled event. Great Job Guys and Congratulations once again!
Perseverance is an attribute all fshermen and women must
possess. Without a strong sense of patience and the willingness to
keep at it, anglers would never fsh more than once or twice a year. A
couple who exemplifes patience and perseverance are Billy & Mary
Ingram. With taking a year off for health reasons and competing
in one of the most competitive regions of C.A.S.T., Billy & Mary
have what it takes. Weighing in frst at Toledo Bend they claimed
the lead as well as Big Bass for the moment. Couple after couple
brought their fsh to the scales and took over the tournament lead
but the Big Bass of the tournament held fast throughout leaving the
Ingrams to claim the honors with a very respectable 3.96 pound
bass! Billy caught the fsh early on a Yellow Magic then worked hard
the rest of the day to improve their stringer. Congratulations!
Besides qualifying for the 2012 C.A.S.T. Classic this tournament
also meant some couples would also qualify for the annual TOP
SIX Invitational Tournament in September. Over 80% of the
Southeast Region couples are now eligible to participate in the
Classic Championship in Del Rio, Texas the fnal weekend in
October. Those couples who qualifed to represent the Southeast
Region at the TOP SIX event are:
We want to congratulate these couples on realizing their goal of
fnishing the entire season strong. We know the Southeast Regions
TOP SIX Invitational Team will be real contenders!

Butler and Butler pull out a Win
for an ultimate Fathers Day
By Jodie Warner
The Bud Light Spring Team Series (Toledo Bend/Rayburn and Shreveport combined) held their
last tournament of the year on Sunday, June 17, 2012 and better known as Fathers Day. The team
of Butler and Butler pulled out the win with a slightly early weigh in of fve fsh at 29.14 lbs. Their
biggest threat though was the team of Jason Kezerle and Rich Remedies who weighed in about 25
lbs with only four fsh around noon with a 9.13 lbs big bass in the bag. The third place team of Glen
Freeman and Jeff Rice won their spot with 24 lbs even.
Arva and Mark Butler said that they started their day off not knowing where to fsh as they hadnt
fshed Toledo Bend very much, being more accustomed to Lake Sam Rayburn. They said they practice
fshed the evening before but didnt fnd too much luck; however, visited the areas again on Sunday
and found great success. The eldest Butler, Arva, said that Mark hung the biggest fsh, which weighed
7.76 lbs, and they had a limit by 9 a.m. at a total of about 12 lbs. Butler said they fshed until about
12:30 before heading in with their sack. They said they fshed with V&M Pork Shad on a drop shot
over brush tops and caught their biggest ones around the Six Mile area. He would like to thank V&M
Cyclone Baits, Ranger boats, Denali, Lews and Shimano.
The only difference between second place and frst place was less than a pound with second place
pulling in a total of 28.29 lbs, and the 2nd spot goes to Jason Kezerle and Rich Remedies. They said
that after weighing in the four fsh about noon, they went back out and managed to cull, but overall
had a slow day. They said that they only got about 10 or 12 bites all day and were fshing in 15-25 feet
of water with a shaky head worm north of the bridge in wooded areas in their Basscat and Mercury
rig. They caught their biggest fsh, 9.13 lbs, on a Net Bait in Watermelon Candy on Vicious line. They
would like to thank their wives Roxanne and Stephanie.
Third place went to Glen Freeman and Jeff Rice who said that they caught fsh all day, about 25-30
and culled throughout the day. Freeman said that they had a limit by 7:30 a.m. and were fshing deep
ridges in the mid-lake area in 15-25 feet of water using worms and jigs; they caught their biggest fsh
around 2 p.m. right before weigh-in. They would like to thank Ranger boats, Yamaha motors, Seagar
line, Lews reels, and Lowrance.
