Fugro Robertson Limited

Llandudno, North Wales, United Kingdom By Mike Goodrich, Lynne Hudson, Alberto Adriasola, Jim Harris, and Carl Watkins

This map displays an overview of Fugro Robertson Limiteds Plate Wizard project, which encompasses detailed global plate definitions, a dynamic model of plate reconstruction through geological time, a unique deformable plates methodology, geological control information, and a GIS front-end. The project has as its starting point detailed global plate definitions, including defined rigid cores and deformable margins. These are based on the detailed regional plate models developed at Fugro Robertson Limited (FRL) over the last ten years, together with a comprehensive analysis of the near global passive margins and oceans gravity and magnetics dataset compiled by Fugro Gravity and Magnetics. This has been used in conjunction with FRLs global geological database to define a consistent global set of continentocean boundary definitions. A key aspect of Plate Wizard is the development of a deformable-plates methodology for both convergent and divergent environments. Plate Wizard represents a major advance over the rigid plate models, with all their inherent problems, that have been available so far. The geological control information aspect of the project is feature linked in GIS to supporting databases, including geological control information and references. Finally, the GIS front-end allows full access to the plate polygons and rotation files, detailed browsing, access, reconstruction and deformation of both Plate Wizard and 3rd party data.

The City of Portland Bureau of Planning has developed a 3D land-use inventory analytical GIS model that estimates the square footage of land use by building floor in Portlands central city. The model, developed in Workstation ArcInfo using ARC Macro Language (AML), produces a single GIS dataset that is used to visualize the land-use information in 3D (in Google SketchUp, ArcScene, or Google Earth).

The Look of Maps
An Examination of Cartographic Design Arthur H. Robinson Originally published in 1952, The Look of Maps documents Arthur H. Robinsons pivotal observation that the discipline of cartography rests at the crossroads of science and art. Based on his doctoral research, this book attempts to resolve the apparent disconnect by covering a range of topics related to the visual characteristics of cartographic technique, including lettering, structure, and color. Robinson offers advice that even the modern cartographer will find relevant: adopt a "healthy questioning attitude" in order to improve and refine the graphic techniques used to present information visually through maps. The Look of Maps is a classic text and an essential component of any cartographic library.

About the Author

Gene Bauer, a native of California, first developed an interest in local flora among the flowers and trees of her childhood town of Garden Grove. While earning her degree in art education at the University of California, Los Angeles, she learned serigraphy, one of the oldest forms of print making, in order to create posters and other teaching materials. After teaching art to junior and senior high school students, Bauer moved to the San Bernardino Mountains where she became involved in a number of garden clubs and the prodigious daffodil planting (one million bulbs to date) that has become so memorable to her community. In the 1970s, her love of plants inspired her to handcraft and issue 61 unique booklets of serigraphs and writing reflecting on her observations of Californias many public gardens. In 1997, a forest fire destroyed her home and surrounding mature native trees. Since then, Bauer has spent her time repairing the damage by planting a forest of deciduous trees.
