Publishers Note
Thank you for your interest in ESRI Press books. Below is an overview of what you can expect from us in 2010. New Books to Support GIS Professionals Lining Up Data in ArcGIS (page 4) and The GIS 20 (page 5) offer best practices that will help geographic information system (GIS) users successfully accomplish common GIS tasks with ArcGIS software. These are two books that you will want to keep on your desk, although it may become difficult once your colleagues find out about them. ArcGIS 10 Software Workbooks In conjunction with the highly anticipated software release of ESRI ArcGIS 10, weve enhanced and structured the GIS Tutorial series to offer a gradual progression of GIS software skill development for beginning, intermediate, and advanced users (pages 1315). The series will also have an updated look; however, you will find that it still offers the solid GIS training foundation that youve come to trust. Getting to Know ArcGIS Desktop (page 11), an ESRI Press best-seller, also has a brand-new look, with software updates for ArcGIS 10, including new exercises and graphics. Getting to Know ArcGIS ModelBuilder (page 12) will be a brand-new title for the Getting to Know series and will provide exercises to help GIS users work effectively with data models. ESRI Press Academic Imprint The ESRI Press Academic imprint continues to grow this year with the release of two new titlesLand Administration for Sustainable Development (page 9) and Ocean Globe (page 10). Books published under the ESRI Press Academic imprint offer strong materials and resources to augment college and university courses. Most ESRI Press book titles, including those under the ESRI Press Academic imprint, are available as desk copies for qualified faculty. Visit www.esri.com/deskcopy to learn more about our desk copy program. Cartographic Classics In 2007, we reprinted Eduard Imhofs classic Cartographic Relief Presentation (page 19), making it more widely available and affordable for professionals, scholars, and cartographic audiences. This year, we plan to reprint two more volumes significant in the cartographic canon: The Look of Maps by Arthur H. Robinson (page 6) and Semiology of Graphics by Jacques Bertin (page 7). Not surprisingly, these books are still relevant when applied to modern technology and will be staples in any cartographic library. Books for General Audiences Filled with vivid and engaging images, Children Map the World, Volume 2 (page 2), and Botanical Serigraphs (page 8) are books suitable for any private collection and will make great gifts. We welcome your questions, comments, and suggestions for new books or book proposals. You can e-mail us at esripress@esri.com. Happy reading!

This map displays an overview of Fugro Robertson Limiteds Plate Wizard project, which encompasses detailed global plate definitions, a dynamic model of plate reconstruction through geological time, a unique deformable plates methodology, geological control information, and a GIS front-end. The project has as its starting point detailed global plate definitions, including defined rigid cores and deformable margins. These are based on the detailed regional plate models developed at Fugro Robertson Limited (FRL) over the last ten years, together with a comprehensive analysis of the near global passive margins and oceans gravity and magnetics dataset compiled by Fugro Gravity and Magnetics. This has been used in conjunction with FRLs global geological database to define a consistent global set of continentocean boundary definitions. A key aspect of Plate Wizard is the development of a deformable-plates methodology for both convergent and divergent environments. Plate Wizard represents a major advance over the rigid plate models, with all their inherent problems, that have been available so far. The geological control information aspect of the project is feature linked in GIS to supporting databases, including geological control information and references. Finally, the GIS front-end allows full access to the plate polygons and rotation files, detailed browsing, access, reconstruction and deformation of both Plate Wizard and 3rd party data.

Contact The results are also used to generate total square footage statistics by land use for any geographic area within the central city. The two main inputs to the model are a database containing the percentage of land use by individual building floor, and a GIS-based 3D model of the city, both of which were created and are maintained by the Bureau of Planning.

The City of Portland Bureau of Planning has developed a 3D land-use inventory analytical GIS model that estimates the square footage of land use by building floor in Portlands central city. The model, developed in Workstation ArcInfo using ARC Macro Language (AML), produces a single GIS dataset that is used to visualize the land-use information in 3D (in Google SketchUp, ArcScene, or Google Earth).

The Look of Maps is the most extensive analytical study of the visual aspect of cartography in American literature. Although the book is provocative rather than conclusive, it tells us what is not known and suggests important lines of investigation.
