2 | MISSION SAN LUIS REY PARISH, Oceanside, California July 1, 2012

From Fr. Adrian

Shirley, our Parish Secretary, has warned me not to take up too much room in the Parish Bulletin this week as we are filled with news and information not a bad complaint! Thanks to all who contributed towards the new icons in the Parish Chapel. We just have six and they were snapped up quickly. To those of you who wanted to have an icon and couldnt we are putting icons of St. Francis, St. Clare and St. Anthony in the Serra Center also, so if youd like to buy one of these you are most welcome. Good religious art is important and necessary both for devotion and to remind us that the saints, our sisters and brothers, pray for us in Heaven and point the way to God for us on earth. The new shrines in the Parish Chapel will have on the left side, a shrine to the Family showing an icon of Jesus, Mary and Joseph; an icon of Jesus with Children and an icon of the Guardian Angel with a boy and girl. On the right side there will be a Franciscan Shrine with icons of St. Francis of Assisi, St. Clare of Assisi and St. Anthony of Padua. The wall hanging at the back shows an image of Our Lady of the Angels, the title of the very first Franciscan church in Assisi called the Portiuncula (Little Portion) the little chapel St. Francis loved so much and which is the mother church of all Franciscan Churches in the world. It was a sad day for us all on Tuesday when Jorge Ponce, Rebecca and their family said goodbye to their daughter Gina who died at the young age of 24. Jorge has been a leader in the Hispanic Community and a dedicated member of our parish. We extend to him and his family our sympathy on their loss. May Gina rest in peace! Hope you are enjoying the beautiful weather and getting down to the ocean. Have a blessed week.

DIRECTORY UPDATE
Dear Parishioners: As you know, our parish directory for the year 2012 has been seriously delayed. There were concerns and corrections that needed to be addressed before releasing the directory for publication. Were sorry for the delay, but we think youll be pleased with the final up-to-date results . The good news weve been given a ship date by the publisher of no later than July 6th. As soon as the directories arrive in the parish office, the Directory Ministry will notify parishioners through the bulletin, parish e-newsletter, website and FACEBOOK. Everyone who sat for a picture will receive a free directory. There will be a limited amount of directories for sale for those who may want additional copies or those who are not receiving a free directory at this time. We share your disappointment for the delay in publication and look forward to the upcoming distribution dates. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Ray and Marta Werner - Directory Ministry

Message of St. Francis for Contemporary Society July 6 8, 2012 With Brother Mark Schroder, OFM
The relevance of St. Francis and the actions of Franciscan women and men for over 800 years can help us address the challenges that modern society brings to us. Political advertisements and media hype as elections near can confuse us. Franciscans (and others) cry out for us to uphold the common good, to better the lives of people caught in poverty and to bring respect to our Mother Earth. We will put a Franciscanspin onto this by prayerfully using Scripture, art, contemplation and a sense of humor. Brother Mark is living at the St. Francis Friary in Sacramento. He is working at a non-profit agency that provides housing options for homeless folks. He lived for seven years at Mission San Luis Rey, moving three years ago. This retreat begins with dinner Friday at 6:00pm and ends with lunch on S unday. Check-in from 4:00pm-6:00pm.

Amn.

WE ARE CATHOLICS AND AMERICAN

Following one of the priorities of the US. Bishops, the Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty has published a declaration encouraging Catholics to speak up and denounce when they consider their freedom is threatened. The declaration begins by stating that, We are Catholics. We are American. We are proud to be both, grateful for the gift of faith which is ours as Christian disciples, and grateful for the gift of liberty To be Catholic and American should mean not having to choose one over the other. The Bishops raise the question, Is our most cherished freedom truly under threat? They responded alluding to several areas where religious freedom is threatened: The mandate from the Department of Health and Human Services. The immigration laws of several states. Altering Church structure and governance. The organization of Catholic students in university campuses Catholic foster care and adoption services. Discrimination against small church congregations Discrimination against Catholic Humanitarian services The document ends by urging Catholics toward an intensification of prayer and fasting for religious liberty.

SOMOS CATLICOS Y AMERICANOS

PRAYER FOR THE PROTECTION OF RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

O God our Creator, through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society. We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith. Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcome for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after usthis great land will always be "one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
