AmendmentsThis standard differs from the October 1988 edition in that it has been editorially revised and the specifica-tions ford1and the number of turns for sizes M14 and M16 have been harmonized with internationalstandards.Previous editionDIN8140-1:1988-10. All dimensions are inmm.1ScopeThis standard specifies dimensions and technical delivery conditions for wire thread inserts (thread inserts, for short) which serve to produce high-strength, wear-resistant internal screw threads in metallic and non-metallic components. They are also used to repair damaged threads and to replace threads worn in service.Thread inserts reduce the susceptibility of bolted connections to cold welding. They are resistant to theeffects of high and low temperatures and to corrosion and ensure a constant coefficient of friction.2Normative referencesThis standard incorporates, by dated or undated reference, provisions from other publications. Thesenormative references are cited at the appropriate places in the text, and the titles of the publications arelisted below. For dated references, subsequent amendments to or revisions of any of these publicationsapply to this standard only when incorporated in it by amendment or revision. For undated references, thelatest edition of the publication referred to applies.Ref.No.DIN8140-1:1999-07English price group09Sales No.010906.00DEUTSCHE NORMJuly 19998140-1{Continued on pages 2 to 13.No part of this translation may be reproduced without the prior permission ofDIN Deutsches Institut fr Normung e.V., Berlin.Beuth Verlag GmbH , D-10772Berlin, has the exclusive right of sale for German Standards(DIN-Normen).Translation by DIN-Sprachendienst.In case of doubt, the German-language original should be consulted as the authoritative text.Wire thread inserts for ISO metric screw threadsPart1:Dimensions and technical delivery conditionsSupersedesOctober 1988 edition. They are classified into type A inserts, for M2 to M39 and M81 to M393 screw threads (cf. figure1), and type B inserts, with the internalcross section taking the form of a centric polygon and with a locking function, for M2,5 to M24 and M81 toM332 screw threads (cf. figure2).NOTE:Locking is achieved by an increased frictional contact in the thread, preventing the bolt in the connec-tion from working loose, this resulting in an increased torque when screwing in the bolt.Thread inserts shall be provided with a notch (as shown in figures1 and 2) permitting removal of the tang afterfitting.*)At present at draft stage.1Notch2TangFigure1:Type A thread insert1Notch2TangFigure2:Type B thread insert, with lockingfunction3.1Nominal lengthThe recommended nominal length of a thread insert is a function of the workpiece material, and the propertyclass of the bolt or the yield strength of the bolt material (cf. table 1). DIN962).EXAMPLE:Thread insert DIN8140 A M6 LH12 A26Service temperaturesThread inserts as specified in this standard are designed for use at temperatures in the range from 40C to+300C.7User information7.1Core holeCore hole diameters ( d2 ) are given in tables 2, 3, 4 and 5. The core holes should not be countersunk, since tappedholes without countersink facilitate the introduction of the thread inserts.Where countersinking is indispensable (e.g. in the case of sealing faces that cannot be finished), the maximumcountersink diameter shall be equal to the major diameter of the tapped hole.7.2Tapped holeThe dimensions and limits of size of the tapped hole shall be as specified in DIN8140-2. For the manufactureand gauging of tapped holes, special screwing taps and plug gauges shall be used.7.3Internal threadThe internal thread provided by the thread insert shall have class 6H tolerances. Special tools are required forintroducing the thread insert. For *), see page 2.5 )No prevailing torque has been specified for coarse pitch threads of sizes M2, M2,5 and M3,5 and fine pitchthreads of sizes M121, M141,25, M241,5, M261,5, M301,5, M362, and M392. However,in DIN8140-2, the

tolerance class for the pitch diameter of the tapped hole has been denoted as 6Hmodtoindicate that the tolerance values deviate from those given in DINISO965-1. These modified values arealso specified in other national standards and works standards.b)Although tolerance class 4H fine is specified in aerospace standards for thread inserts, such narrowtolerances are both impractical and unnecessary for general applications.c)Tables 3 and 5 of this standard include a number of screw threads which do not conform with series 1threads as specified in DIN13-1 and DIN13-3 and the use of which is not recommended. In DIN8140-2, theassociated tapped holes, the use of which is also not recommended, have been listed in a separate table. This table also specifies a number of tapped holes for which no inserts have been standardized, as they arenot commonly used. These tapped holes have nevertheless been included in DIN8140-2 in order to providespecifications for the user of such screw threads.d)This standard gives examples for the indication of thread inserts and tapped holes on drawings. Inter-national Standard ISO6410-2:1993, which has been approved as a European Standard, also deals with thissubject.Other relevant standardsDIN65536-1Aerospace Screw-locking copper alloy wire thread inserts rated for 1100 MPa and 425CDIN65536-2Aerospace Screw-locking copper alloy wire thread inserts Assembly and toolsISO1502:1996ISOgeneral purpose metric screw threads Gauges and gaugingLN 9039-1Aerospace Wire thread inserts rated for 1100MPa and 235C or 425CLN 9039-2Aerospace Wire thread inserts Assembly and toolsLN 9499-1Aerospace Screw-locking copper alloy wire thread inserts rated for 1100MPa and 235Cor 425CLN 9499-2Aerospace Screw-locking wire thread inserts Assembly and tools of 13 Leave a Comment Comment must not be empty.
