Sports Management

Introduction The Sports Management Collection offers materials primarily focused on the undergraduate, B.S. degree offered at ABC in sports management, but the collection is available to all students, faculty, and staff. Items in the collection include materials such as professional research journals, scholarly journals, books, databases, films, and a bibliography of well-maintained and informative websites, all dealing with some aspect of sports management. The materials are divided into three categories: print materials, web materials, and audio and video materials. Those items are then subdivided by material type and then listed in alphabetical order. I. Print Materials Books Andrew, D. P. S., Pedersen, P. M., & McEvoy, C. D. (2011). Research methods and design in sport management. Champaign, IL: Human Kinetics. According to a review by Reference and Resource Book News, This resource provides extensive coverage of the numerous elements of sport management, including design, implementation, analysis, and assessment. In addition, this title is owned by over 80 libraries worldwide. DeSensi, J., & Rosenberg, D. D. (1996). Ethics in sport management / Joy T. DeSensi, Danny Rosenberg. Morgantown, WV : Fitness Information Technology, c1996. According to a review found on ProQuest, this unique text showcases an extensive examination of moral and ethical concepts, principles, and issues in the administration, organization, and operation of sport. Furthermore, This book was awarded most outstanding book published worldwide on sport management by the Fourth International Congress on Sport Management. Dolles, H. (2011). According to Reference and Resource Book News, This textbook describes the skill sets needed by the professional sports manager, and surveys the various subdisciplines within the sports management field. In addition this book is owned by over 400 libraries worldwide. Pedersen, P. (2011). Contemporary sport management (4th ed.). Champaign IL: Human Kinetics. This book is included for sports management students in introductory courses who are considering the field as a career. A review of this book in Reference and Resource Book News writes that this book describes the primary settings of sport management position, the types of work performed by sport managers, and the challenges that sports managers encounter (2011). Thousand Oaks [etc.: Sage Periodicals Press] Betsy Park, in a review from Ulrichs, says that this interdisciplinary quarterly serves as a forum for research and opinions on the interrelationship between sports and sociology, economics, history, psychology, political science, anthropology, and media, gender, and ethnic studies. American City Business Journals *Street and Smith According to the SportsBusiness Journal website, the journal covers everything from sports marketing, sponsorships and media to in-depth analysis of the latest trends in the business (2011). A review found on Ulrichs says that libraries that support advertising agencies, marketing firms, professional teams, and sports associations will want to subscribe. This journal is subscribed to by eight North Carolina Universities (NCSU, ASU, UNCA, WCU, ECSU, FSU, UNCP, and WSSU) and over 150 universities total. Journal Articles Gill, J. L. (2011). The Rutgers Women's Basketball & Don Imus Controversy (RUIMUS): White Privilege, New Racism, and the Implications for College Sport Management. Journal of Sport Management, 25(2), 118-130. This article is published in the Journal of Sports Management. It discusses Don Imus comments on the Rutgers Womens Basketball team and the implications this event has had on the sports management field. Rapley, M., & McHoul, A. (August 01, 2002). Self-Glorification and Its Others: The Discursive-Moral Management of Sports Management. Journal of Sport & Social Issues, 26, 3, 269-282. This article discusses the relationship between sport and everyday life by taking the position that sports help build moral character. This article can be found in Journal of Sport and Social Issues which is subscribed to by six North Carolina state universities and over 700 universities across the country. II. Web Materials Blog

The posts cover a wide range of topics, including ticket sales, marketing, social media, corporate sponsorships, fan loyalty, brand management, sports media, finance and more. It contains scholarly writings and research findings in sports management and can help sports management students keep up-to-date on developments in the field. The website offers a subscription to their journal which is available through eight North Carolina Universities.
