Name of Lesson: Creating your own Algebra Book with iBooks!

Grade Level: 7 Subject: Mathematics Prepared by: Richard Jackson Overview and Purpose: Students will create a how to algebra book. The purpose of this book is to demonstrate their understanding of algebra topics covered in class and to create a book someone else could use to help learn algebra. The following topics will be covered:

Common Core Standards: Mathematics Expressions and Equations Solve real-life and mathematical problems using numerical and algebraic expression and equations. Analyze and solve linear equations and pairs of simultaneous linear equations The number system Apply and extend previous understandings of operations with fractions to add, subtract,
multiply, and divide rational numbers.

Common Core Standards: English/Language Arts Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection and research. Conduct short research projects that use sources to build knowledge through different aspects of a topic. With some guidance and support from adults, use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others; demonstrate sufficient command of keyboarding skills to type a minimum of two pages in a single sitting.

Objectives: At the end of this lesson, you will be able to: Describe certain concepts in algebra Explain how to solve equations and inequalities. Demonstrate their understanding of the concepts by creating their own practice problems and providing answer keys. Integrate what they've learned from class into their own writing and expressing.

Verification: Steps to check for student understanding:

1. Pair editing, students will critique each others work and provide feedback. 2. In-class lessons will be given for students to apply to their book with homework,
quizzes, tests, and games.

3. Students will submit rough drafts of each chapter to check for understanding.
Activity: Make sure you computer has the ibooks Author app downloaded. Students will create an iBook Algebra book that has the criteria listed in the product descriptor. Using the website, http://www.apple.com/ibooks-author/gallery.html to help guide them through the process. Before the process begins, I strongly advise creating a How to create an iBooks book together as a class. 1. Make sure the iBooks Aurthor app is downloaded from the mac app store. 2. Open iBooks and choose a template for your book. 3. Create Chapter 1, how to create a book. Show students they can drag pictures from the internet or take their own pictures using photo booth, etc. (Give credit where credit is due).

4. Section 1 (Chapter 1) you can describe how to import pictures, import interactive media or use widgits in your book so when its published, you can you finger touch and scroll on the iPad. 5. Import some interactive media from the library of virtual manipulatives to demonstrate. (http://nlvm.usu.edu/en/nav/topic_t_1.html) 6. Make sure the teacher has created a free iBooks account to publish to. For information on creating a free account, click on File, publish and click the link to get information on creating a free account. 7. Once students are familiar enough with the iBooks, they can start importing information they have learned or will learn in class to create their book. (See product descriptor below for criteria). Notes Its recommended that your mac computers and iPads are all linked to one Apple ID that you have created with a password you dont mind the kids having. If all are linked with one id, kids can then publish their books using the Apple ID and share the books to all the kids in the classroom to critique.

Algebra Project
You are going to create an algebra book using iBooks, which describes to someone who has never taken any algebra classes, all about algebra. What it algebra? Your book should have a minimum of 12 pages, set up in chapters and in the end, you will publish your book in iBooks and have it available for downloading on the iPad. How you design you book is totally up to you, however, you do need to have the minimum requirements. If you only do the basic things I ask for (which is what an average student would complete) you will only earn a grade of a C. If you go above and beyond, your grade will rise. The pages listed above will need to include the following: 12. Headline 13. Explanation of the topic on the page. 14. Examples of how to do what you are talking about (If someone had never seen this before, how would you explain it to them. 15. Page number. 16. I encourage you to add extra items to your book, such as practice problems, answer keys, etc. Look at the rubric accompanied for a grade break down. This is an excellent portfolio item to demonstrate your understanding of algebra topics.
