Introduction and Definition Process of Performance Management Excellence and Performance Debate Between End and Path Excellence Needs Performance Excellence Never Seeks Excuses Excellence is Never Insecure Learning from Mistakes Talent Vs. Attitude Handouts Distributed to All Bibliography

Introduction
The word management has became modern and relevant like the mobile phones of today, and with globalization of trade and economic liberalization, the word management has altogether acquired a new significance. Performance management refers to the management of an individuals involvement in a particular task so that the result could be a sum of the best of abilities possessed by the individual and all the goals are met in an efficient and effective manner More precisely we can define Performance management asPerformance management is the process of creating an environment in which people are enabled to perform to the best of their abilities. Generally, Performance management can focus on the performance of students, professionals, or even the processes to build a career and future, as well as many other areas. Performance management is a broad term coined by Dr. Aubrey Daniels in the late 1970s to describe a technology (i.e. Science imbedded in applications methods) for managing behavior and results, two critical elements of performance. So the equation becomesBEHAVIOR + RESULTS = PERFORMANCE Or we can say our performance is judged on the basis of two aspects of performance behavior and results. And hence for improving performance, it is necessary to focus on both, on behavior and on results because If we only focus on behavior, we dont get desired results; And if we only focus on results, we dont get excellence and dont behave ethically.

Process of Performance Management

Dr. Daniels has mentioned a common process of performance management consists of five steps(1) Planning Deliberation of what to do and setting expectations; (2) Monitoring Continually checking on performance; (3) Developing Improving the capacity to perform; (4) Rating Periodically scaling performance in a summary fashion; (5) Rewarding Compensating good performance. In strategy games like Chess this process is followed.eg. In start of the game we plan that at what point should we attack, we monitor our as well as opponents moves, by the time we develop an excellence, we set our level or standard and get rewarded by winning. Besides this process a very easy way to get managed performance is Practice. Practice makes perfect. Studies have shown that the most important way to achieve excellent performance in fields such as sport, music, professions and scholarship is to practice..!!! So here we have a formula that isMore Practice Gives More Perfection. At the same time hard work is essential while practicing otherwise your practice has no meaning. When we practice, with the time we achieve a stage in which the performance is said to be managed.

Excellence and Performance

We all know about film star of the century the Big-B the Amitabh Bachchan. We all have witnessed his work many times, his excellent being is his power, and top of all he is at the top is his quest to perform consistently each and every time, again and again which makes him the busiest film star even in his 60s. He felt down lots of times but each time he felt down he came back with greater spirit and thus made his way. This is what Excellence is exactly about. Excellence is defined asExcellence is a quality which is unusually good and so surpasses ordinary standards. It is also an aimed for standard of performance. AlternativelyExcellence is about chasing the performance goal and letting the results take care of themselves. Shaquille Neal says about this"Excellence is not a singular act but a habit. You are what you do repeatedly." Man has abundant capacity to achieve excellence in any field. Excellence does not have an end. The area of management is not exception to this perception. Excellence in management adapts itself to suit the situations, circumstances, environment, targets, culture etc. It may mean many things, to many people but the underlying theme is always the same - quest towards perfection. So we can say that both excellence and management have a huge co-relation. We should focus on achieving the Excellence for managing our performance. Here a discussion comes across that What is important the end or the path; the results or the means. Eventually this discussion became a debate among philosophers in the name of Debate between End and the Path. Our believes about this debate may expressed by the following quoteThe important thing in life is not the victory but the contest; the essential thing is not to have won but to have fought well. .

Debate between End and the Path

Let us start by the classic question of the perennial debate between end and path with a nice quote said by Henry Van Dyke Some succeed because they are destined to, but most succeed because they are determined to." A lot of us believe that the end is more crucial. The end gives us the vision and the end is the driver of ambition. The end at all cost attitudes pervades a feeling of great anxiety, and then the goal becomes the ultimate target and you forget to believe in the today. Many young players set up such goals which sometimes choke them up. They say I must get 500s in this series or 300s in this one an getting this then starts becoming rather than an ambition a feeling of great anxiety. Sandy Gordon , a sports psychologist at university of Australia met some of our young players, he met Yuvraj Singh who complained that he got anxious about the fact that he is not scoring 100s, they both worked together and gave him a different set of goals, he said that rather than scoring huge scores he should try to play the winning role by batting consistently when he is at no. 5 or no. 6 and that eventually led his name come in the eyes of selectors for the first T-20 world cup where he came out with tremendous results.

Excellence Needs Performance!

Many of the young cricketers nowadays being outrageously talented chase the rupee and lost the runs. On this once Allen Border, the famous cricketing short once said that Take care of the runs and the dollars would take care of them themselves. We think we all should follow this rule. We believe that the path is more important than the end and therefore plays a crucial role in order to establish a successful career. Many of the Australian sport coaches are nowadays focusing on perfecting the process of performance and dont allow the pressure of performance choke your thing. The key is that one should always frame up process of result achievement more supreme than the result. Always focus should be on giving the best that one could give becauseMatches are not won or lost because one team plays better than the other one rather it happens when that team doesnt perform as much as it could. So whatever comes out in the finals is the end result of all that has gone in before. In the nets you cant score 130 runs out of 100 balls but you can bat as well as you could. You can give 100% to each moment of preparation. We all are familiar to the famous punch line that comes from one of our favorite movies 3 idiots. That baccha kabil bano kabil, kamyabi jhak mar ke tumhare piche aayegi. And thats what we call a golden rule.

Excellence Never Seeks Excuses

Winners make goals, losers make excuses. Australian Cricket Team is a great example of this quality. They came to India in 1999 and 2001 but they lost. But they never gave silly excuses. They just said that theyll be come back soon. When they came in 2003 they came near the success but lost. Finally in 2005 they won. This quality made them three times world champion in cricket.

Excellence is never insecure

Sometime when people reach a level of excellence, they become insecure of their knowledge or their skill and then they proceed towards wrong steps. Once a young bowler approached Shane Warne to learn a slider from him; no being insecure of his knowledge taught him his craft, believing that its not a problem that the young bowler would come tomorrow and prove himself to be better than him Always one should try to look up to people who are better than you. Not necessary that they belong to your profession. For example: lets see around us! The Bus Drivers of our college. Lets check out their schedule. They collect at a place where the bus is parked in the morning 6:30 for which they have to start their day in the morning at 5. They have a continuous driving work for the whole day running 6 rounds. They work till 7 in the evening i.e. a 12 hr. job for a day. And besides this see their regularity. Every morning it might be a case that you are not present for the bus but that driver meets the stop every day, every shift for weeks and months. Man! These guys are really working their backsides off very hard and thats great. These could be people who are better than many of us.

Excellence is about learning from your mistakes

When you make a mistake whats your first reaction you say that nobody looks at me - dont you? Mistakes can be your best friend. They simply give you the best learning. Because Mistakes tell you what not to do. Excellence as much knows what to do as knowing what not to do. And the more you know what not to do the road to what to do open up doesnt it. One can learn a lot from his mistakes. Many people think that a mistake is a crime youre not allowed to make a mistake. No, everybody is allowed to make the first mistake. its the second and the third mistake which you are not allowed to make. So it is said thatWhen you lose a couple of times, it makes you realize how difficult it is to win. When bowlers are planning for a match they actually look at batsmans week links. Its because the batsman is getting out every time committing the same mistake, thats why bowlers are able to plan out against him. The more one knows that where he is falling the more he is away from the fall. In the world of excellence if you have ego and anger on your side than you dont need an opponent.

Excellence Is Not About Talent It Is About Attitude!

We place a lot of emphasis on talent. Talent dazzles. And we say wow I wish I couldve been like that. But according to us talent has a very small part of excellence. And in course of time you find that ability or talent is the most useless word that you possess. Beyond a point talent does not solve problems. What actually matters is that what you do with that talent. And here comes in the picture what we call Attitude. That counts for far far more than anything else. Vinod Kambli is a prime example of this. When Courtney Walsh started throwing bouncers to him in Bombay he was 22 years old, didnt know what to do. Dropped off from playing test cricket, played his last test match when he was 22. Because talent had solved everything for him before. Talent breeds an ego. It makes you stop caring about your mistakes. Its not that if a bowler comes to you will deliver a slow ball saying that- ohh you are a genius so Ill give you a slow ball. Talent may open the first door, might be the second door but its not going to open the last door. Its the attitude what drives you till the end and not talent.

Sachin Tendulkar: A great example of what is attitude

When he was born it was not that the nurse picked him up and said that here Mrs. Tendulkar your 100 centuries for you. Your work ethic and attitude counts far more than anything else. Tendulkar is the best example for this. When we talk about Tendulkar the first word that comes to our mind is talent. But its not like that; he played 55 games back to back, as a 14 year old, 55 days continuously. He practices for two hrs. Plays a game, practice 2 hrs. And then fall asleep at the dining table. It was his attitude and passion to perform which took him there. He definitely fell down at many places he got stumbles but he bounced back and made his way again all through. He just didnt stopped at the roadblock, he struggled and gave his full to cross over that. And this is his quality of what makes all of us to salute him. In Australian army when they are building an elite core team they look at your career record and if you have never failed they dont pick you up, they dont pick you up because they say that if this guy experiences failure what is he going to do. They pick people who have failed and bounced back.
