The Practice of Tratak

The technique of tratak remains much the same, whatever the target of you gaze is, though naturally you will have to adapt it slightly when meditating outdoors. 1. Place the object at eye level, three feet (90 cm) away from you. 2. First regulate your breathing, then start to gaze at the object without blinking. 3. Don't stare or gaze vacantly - just look steadily without straining. 4. After about a minute, close your eyes, and keep your inner gaze steady, visualize the object. 5. When the after-image vanishes, open your eyes and repeat. A candle flame is the most widely used object for Tratak, as it easy to hold an after-image of the bright flame when you close your eyes. You should place the candle at eye level in a darkened, draught-free room.

Tratak Meditation is a traditional basic exercise to acquire concentration and control the mental waves. Tratak (fixed gazing) is an ancient yogic technique that concentrates the mind, opens the psychic centers and awakens the force of kundalini (Divine energy) latent in the Muladhara chakra (first psychic center) at the base of the spine taking one deep into meditation. With this meditation you stare steadily at a single point or object without blinking. Where the eyes go the mind follows. With your eyes you lead your mind into "One-Pointed Meditation". By staring steadily at an object, closing your eyes and then visualizing the object alternately, you train the mind to focus its awareness. Any object maybe used as long as it remains still and is relatively small to the gaze. A candle is the most recommended object as it is easy to evoke its image when you close your eyes. Stare at the object without blinking as long as you can then close your eyes try to see the image. When it fades open your eyes and stare unblinkingly at the candle. Start with 5 min., then gradually increase the time to half an hour and then up to an hour. In Hatha yoga, tratak constitutes one of the six exercises of body purification (Kriyas: dhauti, basti, neti, nauli, kapalabhati and tratak) Tratak is an important exercise to control the mental . There are different types of tratak: - Tratak on the external objects (a point, a flame of candle, an object shining... - Tratak on a point on the external surface of the body (end of the nose: nasagra drishti, third eye: bhrumadhya drishti). It is preferable to control the normal tratak before being exerted in Bhrumadhya Drishti or nasagra drishti. The object can be also an idol, masters picture, waterfall, river flow, tree; it can be anything of nature. But if it is a masters picture or if possible the presence of the guru is more than perfect. The Meditation technique of mirror gazing is also possible it is a very powerful method for encountering one's unconsciousness. There is also the antar tratak, which means directing one's attention within oneself, e.g., closing the eyes and keeping the

consciousness on the space between the eyebrows i.e., seat of the third eye or on the heart center seat of the spiritual heart At the beginning, practise this exercise only for short periods, and increase the duration of practice gradually. Effects of tratak: The objective of tratak is the control of the mental subconscious. One cannot immobilize the mental if the eyes are not motionless. This exercise acts on the centers olfactive and optical, it stimulates the nervous system. It brings: - Controls of ciliarys Reflex -Excitation of lachrymal glands -Stimulation of pineal glands - Relieving of body, interior peace - Improvement of the sight - Fortification of the will - Improvement of the memory and the concentration Benefits It corrects defect of the eyes. The mind becomes steady. Improves eyesight. Rate of breathing is slowed down. Sufferers of insomnia and mental tension should do Tratak 15 minutes before sleeping at night. Memory power and concentration increases. Eyes become powerful. The power to control one's emotion and the decision making power increases. It is one of the powerful methods of controlling our mind. Though Tratak is simple to perform, regular practice reaps results for the well-being of your eyes and mind. The exercise will sharpen your vision, and, according to Deshpande, even remove the elementary stages of short-sightedness. Besides that, it cleanses your eyes and strengthens your eye muscles. It will also reduce eye ailments, including conjunctivitis. If you blink excessively or have restless eyeballs, these too will be resolved. Because Tratak requires concentration, it is beneficial for your mind too. It encourages you to focus only on one thing, which means that your mind relaxes and becomes indifferent to other stimuli. Your mind becomes more stable and calm, and will be able to focus on things a lot better.
The first thing is to stare without any blinking, continuously for thirty minutes; and the whole consciousness must come to the eyes. You must become the eyes. Forget everything - the whole body; just be eyes and continually stare without any blinking. The consciousness centered in the eyes leads you to the peak of being tense - the climax of being tense. The eyes are the most delicate. That is why they can be more tense than any other part, and with the eyes in a tension, the whole mind is tense. The eyes are just doors to the mind. When you BECOME eyes, the mind goes up and up to the climax, and from that climax to fall down, is to fall down into the abyss of relaxation. So Tratak is to create one of the most tense peaks in the consciousness through the eyes.

Thinking will stop automatically, and by and by, as you proceed further, the consciousness becomes more centered in the eyes. You will just be aware. There will be no thinking, because eyes cannot think. No thinking is possible with the eyes. When the whole consciousness is centered in the eyes, mind has no energy left for thinking. Mind just stops thinking; and the moments your eyes want to blink, these are the moments to be avoided, because the mind is trying to get energy back to think. That is why constant string, fixed staring, is needed. Even a movement of the eyes gives energy to the mind. So, do not move the eyes. FIXED STARING! When you are staring with no movement of the eyes, the mind is also fixed. The mind moves with the eyes, and the eyes are the outer parts of your face; the other extreme which goes out. Eyes are just part of the brain, the other extreme. Eyes are the doors - the doors that belong to the inside mind and also to the outside world. If the eyes are totally fixed, the mind really stops. It cannot move. The best time to perform Tratak, say masters, is in the early hours of 4.00 to 6.00 am, when the mind is most receptive. If those times are inconvenient, you might want to perform it before going to bed. Try to perform Tratak alone and undisturbed, in a dark and silent room.

OSHO Mirror Gazing I am very suspicious of anything to do with Osho. I include this as it demonstrates quite simply that the face-changing mirror exercise is not something unique to MB.
Close the doors of your room and put a big mirror just in front of you. The room must be dark. Then put a small flame by the side of the mirror in such a way that it is not directly reflected in it. Just your face is reflected in the mirror not the flame. Then constantly stare into your own eyes in the mirror. Do not blink. This is a forty-minute experiment. Within two or three days you will be able to focus your eyes without blinking. Even if tears come, let them come but persist in not blinking. And go on staring constantly into your eyes. Do not change the stare. Go on staring into the eyes - your OWN... And within two or three days you will become aware of a very strange phenomenon. Your face will begin to take new shapes. You may even get scared. The face in the mirror will begin to change. Sometomes a very different face will be there

which you have never known as yours. But, really, all these faces belong to you. Now the subconscious mind is beginning to explode these faces. these masks are yours! Sometimes even a face that belongs to your past life may come in. And after one week of constant staring for forty minutes, your face will become just a flux, just a film-like flux. Many faces will be coming and going constantly. After three weeks you will not be able to remember which is your face. Your own face, you will not be able to remember, because you have seen so many faces coming and going. If you continue anyway, then after three weeks the strangest thing happens. Suddenly there is no face in the mirror. The mirror is vacant. You are staring into emptiness. There is no face at all. This is the moment! Close your eyes, and encounter the unknown. When there is no face in the mirror just close your eyes. This is the most significant moment. Close the eyes, look inside and you will face the unknown. You will be naked, completely nothing, as you ARE. All deceptions fall. This is the reality, but the society has created many, many layers, not to be aware of it. Once you know yourself in your nakedness, your total nakedness, you begin to be a different person. Then you cannot deceive yourself. Now you know what you are, and unless you know what you are you can naver transform, because any transformation becomes possible only in this naked reality. This naked reality is potential

for any transformation. No deception can be transformed. Your original face is now here, and you can transform it. And really, just a will to transform it, will affect the transformation. But you cannot transform your false faces. You can change them, but you cannot transform them. By change I mean you can replace them with another face. So, a thief can become a monk. A criminal can become a saint. It is very easy to change, to replace the masks, the faces. These are no transformations at all. Transformation means becoming that which you really are. The moment you face the unconscious, encounter the unconscious, you are face to face with the reality of your authentic being. This encounter is basic, foundational, for any religious happening. So, many many methods have been invented. There are sudden methods. There are gradual methods. I have told you about a gradual method.

Tratak or Meditation on Light

Tratak, also called candle gazing, is a method of concentrating on a point of light; serving as a visual reminder to use lighthearted attitudes in living.

To begin: In your meditation place, sit up straight facing a low table and light a candle. Fold your hands in your lap.

Take some moments to just look at the flame, letting your eyes almost shut. Begin to feel the warmth of light emanating from the candle flame. It can be a reminder that even a little kindness, from lighthearted actions, makes another's day warmer and brighter.

If you do close your eyes you will probably see the reverse color of the candle flame in your vision. Focus on that for a minute or as long as you can.

Now, begin to breathe evenly: breathe in counts 1, 2; breathe out counts 3, 4; breathe in counts 5, 6, and go on for another minute.

Let go of counting but continue to breathe evenly. Reflect on how you could add one form of lighthearted activity to your life, such as: showing patience; being kind; allowing another to express themselves without interruption; adopting an attitude of seeing a glass half full rather than half empty; doing a volunteer activity; helping a person in need.

Finish your meditation with a prayer or affirmations of well wishes for family, friends, community and world peace.

Take a deep breath, stand and stretch.

SELF DEVELOPMENT
Exercises (I) Keep the picture of Sri Krishna, Rama, Narayana, Devi or Lord Jesus or any picture, in front of you. Look at it steadily without winking. Gaze at the head; then at the body; then at the legs. Repeat the same process again and again. When your mind calms down look at a particular spot only. Be steady till tears begin to trickle down your cheeks. Then close the eyes and mentally visualize the picture. Gaze on a black dot on a white wall or draw a black mark on a piece of white paper and hang it on a wall in front of you. Gaze at this black mark steadily for sometime. Draw the picture of OM on a piece of paper and have it before your seat. Do Tratak on this. Lie down on an open terrace and gaze at a particular bright star or on the full moon. After sometime you will see different colours of light. Again sometime later, you will see only a particular light throughout, and all other surrounding stars will disappear. When you gaze at a moon you will see only the bright moon on a black background. At times you will see a huge mass of light all around you. When the gazing becomes more

intense, you can also see two or three moons of the same size and at times you cannot see any moons at all even though your eyes may be wide open. (V) Select at random any place in the open sky in the morning or evening hours and gaze at it steadily. You will get fresh inspiration. Look at a mirror and gaze at the pupil of your eyes. Some persons do Tratak on the space between the two eyebrows or at the tip of the nose. Even while walking some persons do Tratak on the tip of the nose. Advanced students can do Tratak on the inner Chakras or Padmas. Muladhara, Anahata Agna and Sahasrara are the important centers from Tratak. Keep a ghee lamp before you and gaze at the flame. Some astral entities give Darshan through the flames. Very few Yogins do Tratak on the sun. it requires the help of a man of experience by their side. They begin to gaze on the rising Sun and after gradual practice they do Tratak on the Sun even at mid-day. They get some special Siddhis (psychic powers) by this practice. All are not fit for this Sadhana.

All the first nine exercises will suit everybody and they are quite harmless. The last one, sun gazing, should not be attempted until you get the help of an experienced man. Instructions When you do the practice in your meditation room, sir on your favorite posture. At other times, standing posture will do. Tratak can be profitably done even when you walk along the streets. As you walk along, do not look higher and thither. Gaze at the trip of the nose or toes. There are many persons who do not look at the face when they talk to others. They have their own gaze at a particular spot and talk. No particular Asana is required for this Sadhana. When you gaze at a picture, it is Tratak. When you close your eyes and mentally visualize the picture, it is Saguna Dhyana (meditation with form). When you associate the attributes of omniscience purity, perfection, etc., the name and the form of the object of Tratak will automatically disappear and you will enter in to Nirguna Dhyana (abstract meditation). Do Tratak for two minutes to start with. Then cautiously increase the time. Do not be impatient. Gradually steady practice is required. Gazing at a spot even for three full hours continuously counts for nothing if the mind is wandering. The mind also must be on the spot. Then only you will advance in this practice and attain many psychic

powers. Those who cannot gaze for a second in spite of several attempts need not worry themselves much. They can close their eyes and gaze at the imaginary spot in the space between the two eyebrows. Those who have very weak eye capillaries should do Tratak after closing their eyes on an imaginary spot within or without. Do not tax your eyes by over-practice. When you feel tired, close the eyes and keep the mind on the object of Tratak. When you sit and do Tratak, do not shake the body. Tratak improves eyesight. Many who have eye trouble have realized valuable benefits by Tratak. Going beyond ones powers gazing at the Sun without any help may produce some trouble. For gazing at the sun you must have your guide by your side. The Guru will prescribe some oil to rub on your head, to avoid such serious trouble as may arise, to cool the system. You should apply honey to the eyes at night when you do sun gazing. By the practice of Tratak, many eye diseases are cures. Eyesight improves. Many have thrown away their eyeglasses after taking to this practice. WILL-power is developed to a marvelous extent. Vikshepa (tossing of the mind) is destroyed. It steadies the mind. Clairvoyance, though-reading and other psychic powers are obtained very easily. Once again, I will have to tell you that Bhakti Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Karma Yoga and Gnana Yoga are not incompatibles, like acid and alkali. They are not antagonistic to each other. Do not neglect this exercise for the mere reason that it comes under Hatha Yoga practices. Even though you may claim to be a student of Gnana Yoga or Bhakti Yoga, you can take to this practice. It is very effective and powerful remedy for the wandering mind. It prepares the mind undoubtedly for perfect Dhyana and Samadhi. This is assuredly for perfect Dhyana and Samadhi. This is assuredly a means to the end. You should ascend the Yogic ladder step by step. Several persons have been benefited by this useful exercise. Why not you also, dear friends? I have given you different exercises for Tratak. Select any one methods that suits you best and realize the spiritual benefits. Do this for one month regularly and let me know your experiences, benefits and also troubles, if any. Practice of Meditation Concentration is fixing the mind on one point. It is called Dharana in Yoga philosophy. Concentration is collectiveness of thought. It is said to be the placing, settling of mind and mental properties fittingly and well on a single object. That state, by the strength of which mind and mental properties are placed in one object fittingly and well, without wavering, without scattering, should be known as concentration. Meditation follows concentration. There is a continuous flow of idea only. The characteristic of concentration is not wandering. Its essence is to destroy wavering. Its manifestation is not shaking. The mind of the happy man is

concentrated. Happiness or ease is its proximate accompanied by ease, even-mindedness and raptures.

You must be regular in your practice of meditation. You must sit daily both morning and night and at the same hour. The meditative mood or Sattwic Bhava will manifest by it self without any exertion. You must sit in the same place, in the same room. Regularity in meditation is a great desideratum and a sine qua non. Rapid progress and great success can be attained if the practitioner maintains regularity. Even if you do not realize any tangible result in the practice, you must plod on in the practice with sincerity, earnestness, patience and perseverance. You will be crowned with sanguine success after some time. There is no doubt have this. Do not stop the practice even for a day, under any circumstances, even if you are ailing. Meditation is a first class tonic. The wave of meditation will remove all sorts of disease. It will infuse spiritual strength, new vigor and vitality. It will renovate and completely overhaul the different systems and constitution. Meditation will give real rest to the body. Be on the alert to catch the Sattwic wave or the meditative mood. If the meditative mood manifests, stop at once work of any kind, regarding, etc. sit for meditation in right earnest. Pride self-sufficiency, arrogance, self-assertive Rajasic of other people, and hypocrisy, are all obstacles in meditation. Subtle forms of these Vrittis lurk in the mind. They operate as oceanic under-currents. Under pressure of Yoga and meditation, various sorts of dirt in the mind come out, just as dirt of a room that is shut up for six months comes introspect and watch their minds. They should remove them, one by one, by applying suitable, effective methods. Pride is inveterate. Its branches ramify in all directions in the regions of the Rajasic mind. Again and again it manifests, although the wave subsides temporarily for some time. It asserts when opportunities crop up. If the aspirant has the nature of being offended easily for trifling things, he should cultivate amiable, loving nature and adaptability. Then this bad habit will vanish. Some aspirants get easily offended if their bad qualities and defects are pointed out. They become indignant and scorn the man who indicates the defects. They think that the man is concocting them out of jealously and hatred. This is bad. Other people can very easily find out our defects. A man who has no life of introspection, whose mind is of out-going tendencies (Bahirmukha-Vritti) cannot recognize his own mistakes. The self-conceit acts as a veil and blurs the mental vision. If an aspirant wants to row, he must admit his defects when pointed out by others. He must thanks the man who points out his defects. Then only he can grow in spirituality and meditation. It becomes a difficult task to eradicate the Self-assertive nature. Every man has built his personality from beginingless time. He has given a long rope to the Rajasic mind to have its own ways. This personality has grown very strong. It becomes difficult to bend this personality and make it pliable and elastic. The man of self-assertive nature wants to dominate over others. He does not want to hear the opinions and reasons advanced by others, even though they are sound, logical and tenable. He has a pair of jaundiced eyes with timira also. He will say: Whatever I say is correct; whatever I do is correct; the action and views of others are incorrect. He will never admit his mistakes. He will try his level best to maintain his own whimsical views by crooked arguments and reasoning. If arguments fail he will take to vituperation and hand-tohand fight. If people fail to show respect and honour, he is thrown into a state of

fury. He is immensely pleased if number of lies to justify himself. Self-justification goes hand in hand with self-assertive nature. This is a very dangerous habit. He can never grow in meditation and spirituality so long as he has self-assertive nature with the habit of self-justification. The self-assertive man should change his mental attitude. He must develop the habit of looking at matters from the viewpoint of others. He must have a new vision of righteousness and truthfulness. An aspirant should treat respect and honour as offal and censure and dishonour as ornament. Man finds it difficult to adjust to the ways and habits of others. His mind is filled with prejudice of caste, creed and colour. He is quite intolerant. He thinks that only his views, opinions and ways of living are right, and the views of others are incorrect. The faultfinding nature is ingrained in him. He jumps at once to find the faults of others. He has morbid eyes. He cannot see the good in others. He cannot appreciate the meritorious actions of others. He can brag of his own abilities and actions. That is the reason why he has no peace of mind even for a second. That is the reason why he disagrees with all people and cannot keep up the friendship with others for a long time. Aspirants do not make progress in the path, because they should eradicate them completely by developing tolerance, pure love and other Sattwic qualities. If there are hindrances or obstacles in the path of Yoga, it is difficult, it is a little unpleasant to carry on the practice of concentration and meditation. It is easy in some aspirants as there are no such oppositions. Obstacles can be removed by sincere prayer, japa of OM or any other Mantra, divine grace or the grace of Guru. Patanjali Maharishi prescribes Japa of OM with Bhava and meaning. Tajjapastadartha-bahvanam for the removal of obstacles. Sri Krishna prescribes the remedy Ma Chitta Sarva Durgani Matprasadat tarishyasi- fixing thy though on Me. Thou shall surmount every difficulty by my grace. Gita: Ch. XVII.-58. Is an aspirant in Kashmir meditates upon his Guru or spiritual guide at Uttarakashi in the Himalayas, a definite connection is established between him and the teacher. The Guru radiates power, peace, joy and bliss to the student in response to his thoughts. He is bathed in the powerful current of magnetism. The stream of spiritual electricity flows steadily from the preceptor to his disciple just as oil flows one vessel to another. The student can imbibe or draw from his teacher in proportion to his degree of faith in his master. The more the faith, the greater the imbibing or drawing. Whenever the student sincerely meditates upon his teacher, the teacher also actually feels that a current of prayer (sublime thoughts) proceeds from his student and touches his heart. He who has the inner astral sight can clearly visualize a thin line of bright light between the disciple and the teacher, which is caused by the movement of the vibration of Sattwic thoughts in the ocean of Chitta (mental substance). If you look upon the world from the higher spiritual plane, you will have a clear vision of the world. In that supreme cosmic consciousness, you will have a knowledge of the whole universe. Arjuna describes this : Into Thy gaping mouths they hurrying rush, Tremendous-toothed and terrible to see; Some caught within the gaps between Thy teeth

Are seen, their heads to powder crushed and ground. On every side, all swallowing, fiery-tongued, Thou lickest up mankind, devouring all Thy glory filleth space; the universe Is burning, Vishnu, with Thy blazing rays. Just as small insects or fishes move about here and there in a small lake, just as ants crawl about in the wall of a house, so also, all these little human beings move about hither and thither within the body of the Lord. This vision is thrilling and aweinspiring. You will see millions of undeveloped souls who run about with countless selfish desires, Just as the Leucocytes and red corpuscles move about in a drop of fresh blood when seen under the microscope. Amidst this multitude of ignorant, undeveloped human beings, you will find a few fully developed human beings, you will find a few fully developed Jivanmuktas or Gnanins or Yogis, scattered in different parts of the world, who stand out as big divine flames or beacon-lights, or torch bearers to the light-house stands amidst darkness of the night to guide the captain of a steamer. You will also find some sincere, growing, and half-developed aspirants who emanate a small divine flame, who glitter like the stars on a new moon night. Wonderful is this vision! Magnanimous is this inner Yogic sight seeing with the new eye of intuition!

Feng Shui, Ch'i and Meditation There are many ways to make our lives more tranquil, but few are easier, cheaper and more fulfilling than the ancient Chinese art of meditation. Fountains of water can heighten the tranquil and calming affects of good meditation. First , a few definitions: Chi is our cosmic breath. It is the energy within the air around us, the energy used by all living things upon the earth. This energy is a positive energy and a force of life that penetrates throughout the earth and all life. Chi means breath it is the force by which all trees, plants, streams, rivers and even volcanoes are created. Positive Chi is created by the gentle flow of water. Feng Shui in Chinese means wind and water. There is an art to Feng Shui in which the Chinese use placement and balance in nature to enhance our environment. This art dates back at least 5,000 years. How we use this balance of Feng Shui is very important in creating the best possible Chi energy in our environment. According to the ancient Chinese, the Chi in our lives can be enhanced through meditation and a chosen healthy environment. Good Chi in your home that flows smoothly, improves and enhances the Chi of the humans in that home. To create a healthy environment in the home, a Ba-Gua chart is helpful in the placing of furniture in the home, however, here we would like to focus on the art of meditation to help our environmental and personal Chi. In meditation, the use of a fountain with trickling, soothing water facilitates the activation of good Chi. Fountains are a microcosm of Chi, offering protection and strength against any bad Chi in your environment. In business, the Chi from water fountains encourages profits, but here we look for the calming, soothing chi of meditation.

First, the best position for a small fountain is in the southeast or east corner of the room in which you will meditate. Placed in this area, the fountain will favor relationships, communication and creativity. A fountain with a floating or spinning sphere is particularly supportive for meditation. Crystal or natural stone agate spheres have been used as ritual objects by the Chinese for thousands of years. A crystal sphere converts light into power and energy, and while spinning in the flowing water of a fountain will fill the room and home with powerful, positive chi. These fountains and sphere are excellent with the use of the Tratak technique of meditation. To use the technique of Tratak meditation, you sit about 3 feet from the flowing fountain of water and gaze at the sphere in the water. Slowly regulate your breathing to even breaths, and begin to stare or gaze at the sphere. Relax, and blink as little as possible, dont strain to see the sphere, but just look steadily and try to dismiss all thoughts from your mind except for the spinning sphere, while listening to the trickle of water. After about one minute, you can slowly close your eyes and keep focusing on the spinning sphere within your mind. Visualize the spinning sphere for as long as possible, breathing in even breaths slowly, if the image vanishes, just slowly open your eyes, focus again on the sphere and sound of the water, and repeat back to meditation. If your fountain has no stones, just place a statue, dragon or tortoise in the water to restrain the positive Chi. May all your meditations be positive. Namaste
