LIFE 2012 From Citizenship to Leadership

The world has never faced such a daunting set of challenges as it does today. As we have moved into a new millennium, the future looks even more uncertain. It is time to empower the young to be able to think in new ways and be ready to take bold decisions, and to develop creative leadership traits for a better understanding of a multi- faceted and interconnected world.

SMS Convention Center, Jaipur , 3-5 August 2012

Leadership Initiatives For Excellence

The global economy faces significant regional and global headwinds with a sharp rise in global risk aversion. Indias quarterly GDP growth has dropped to a 9 year low of 5.3% creating new short term challenges in its fight against poverty even as long term risks such as climate change continue to loom large. The global economic and political landscape will largely depend on how we manage many of these issues over the next decade and beyond.

Will the global financial system & its economic institutions ultimately ensure healthier, quality growth in the long term? Can these global risks be transformed into business opportunities? Does technology hold the key to mitigating risks and mobilizing community?

It is in this context that TGELF convenes LIFE this year under the theme From Citizenship to Leadership. Over three days participants will immerse themselves in workshops to deliberate issues, generate insight and guide action to mitigate and eventually overcome global risks.

Sessions in Parallel Poverty & Inequity Indias economic growth over the last decade has helped lift many out of poverty. These gains are now being threatened by the challenges of a slowing economic growth and increasing inequity in the distribution of wealth. This is evident across the globe now, spanning all continents. This constitutes one of the biggest global risks in terms of unrest and suffering. We need to debate on ways and means of creating systems which can help peoples withstand economic shocks, cope with the digital world, and be able to protect and preserve our environment. In what direction should government move: should they focus on education as the chief component to spur on growth or will schemes like NREGA be better? Why have the microfinance initiatives not been as successful as expected? What is the role that Global corporations and wealthy individuals can play in addressing and resolving these issues?

14.00 - 15.30 SMS Convention Center Ranthambhore Hall

Sessions in parallel Governance & Corruption Corruption is a deep-rooted malady, which can destabilise the economy of nations. India has had its share, with recent 3G and other scams. It is an issue that cannot be swept under the carpet and it needs to be addressed with urgency. If corruption is Global, why is India singled out? Would the right kind of education, rooted in ethics be the answer? What role does governance play here? How can civil society approach this problem? Why is black money such a destabilising economic factor?

15.00-15.45 15.45 - 17.15 SMS Convention Center Jaigarh Hall

Tea Break Sessions in parallel Environment & Sustainability We are now face to face with the stark reality of how much growth can this planet sustain. The emerging economies obviously look at great investment in industrialisation. Depleting ground water and loss of bio diversity pose a grave threat to the very existence of the human race. India is particularly vulnerable with its teeming population. What new approaches are being adopted in India and the world at large? Are investments in clean technology paying off? Are conferences and promises enough? Is it not time to put words into action?

Sessions in Parallel Demographics: Dividend or Liability? The demographic compositions vary across countries. Some, like Japan and many western countries have the problem of an aging population. But, in India, there are 350 million children in the K 12 segment alone, the largest in any nation. But a bare 12% find their way through any kind of education system. Nearly 1 million enter the job market every month, but there are not enough jobs to go around. Will this demographic statistic be our advantage or will it turn into a liability? What are the areas that can be looked at as employment intensive sectors, and what

Saturday 4 August can the government do to create more jobs? Why has vocational education proved to be a non-starter in India? Will liberalising the education sector help in bridging this skill deficit? 18.00-20.00 Video Conference with Dr Daniel Shapiro, Founder & Director, Harvard International Negotiation Program, Harvard Law School The session will discuss conflict management and its crucial role in resolving the vexing issues we face in forging solutions to todays problems. 19.00 - 22.00 Gala Soiree Sufi Gospel Project The Sufi Gospel Project is a blend of Gopsel hymns and Sufi verses set to Indian Classical music.
