There is something that touched me when I was in Uganda doing the story about the Uganda Martyrs. I was shocked to be told that the young men who were killed by the king was as a result of saying the Lords prayer .thy kingdom come The king asked whos kingdom they were waiting to come yet there was only one kingdom; the Kabaka Kingdom. The king was not satisfied with the answers given and ordered they persecution if they would not stop praying. But these young men instead accepted to lose their lives for the sake of Christ. Well, why am I telling you all these? Our main story takes us to the Patriarch's visit to Kibera. The patriarch came to preach the word of God to us simply because we have the freedom of worship. But I was trying to compare our church today where the pastors, the priests and the evangelists are preaching to us to pray, pray, pray each day yet we don't pray as often while in Uganda in 1887, the King asked the young men to stop, stop, stop praying each day, but they didn't stop and they were all burnt alive for disobeying the King. We must consider our selves very lucky because the Almighty God has given us the freedom of choice and regardless of our choice, we are not given an instant punishment There is also a number of selected herbs that you probably the same way King Kabaka did, instead we are given more know but have no knowledge of their medicinal benefit. time to repent. St. Michaels parish of the Charismatic Episcopal Church (CEC) in Nairobis Kibera slums had a rare guest on Sunday April 1st 2012, the bishop of Nairobi Mt. Rev. Bernard Njoroge and his wife Helen Njoroge joined the faithful in celebrating the first Palm Sunday in the slums and it was a great joy for the slum dwellers. St. Michaels parish was opened last year after approval from Mt. Rev. Bp. Bernard Njoroge when Fr. Collins Kayo (current parish

priest) and Fr. Daniel Kimuli (Parish Priest-Christ the King, city center) realized that most members of the CEC would not afford to attend the city center mass each Sunday for lack of bus fare hence starting a parish in the estate to reach out to them. There are more other parishes yet to come up in the estates of Nairobi to ensure that the Gospel is spread to each place regardless. In St. Michaels, since its opening last year, massive growth of members has been witnessed and the parishioners are hopeful that their parish will be bigger than it is today. Most of the parishioners of St. Michaels parish are residents of Kibera while others come from neighboring estates. In his homily, the bishop challenged the congregation to evangelize for the church so that the church may grow. He also prophesy that by next year same time, the church will have doubled going with the rapid and extensive growth the church has experienced since it was started last year. Its faith that moves mountains the bishop said. In her part when given time to share with the congregation, Mrs. Helen Njoroge could not hide her joy. She talked very strong on empowering women as women are the back born of families and she promised to work with the women of Kibera. Mrs. Njoroges verse of the day came from Isaiah 43; 1 I have called you by name, you are mine. She reminded the people of Kibera of Gods love for them and gave them more hopes when she said that she will work with them. The bishop and his wife contributed a percentage of the whole years rent for the hall that the CEC parish is renting 7
while the parish leadership continues looking for a larger space within the slums to construct their own house. It will cost us around Kshs. 500,000 (US $ 6,250) to have our own piece of land within Kibera and construct our own church where we will not pay any rent Fr. Collins the parish priest said to the bishop after the Sunday mass. For the parishioners, the celebrations of Jesus triumph entry to Jerusalem on the Palm Sunday came and turn to be their greatest joy and they thanked God. After the bishops car left through the tiny Kibera streets, the members had some snacks for everyone present to celebrate since to some families here, getting three meals a day still remains impossible. In Kibera slums, the Government owns all the land. And if acquired through a legal process, the titles deeds are provided to churches and NGOs by the government hence no fear of future evictions. 10% of people living in Kibera are shack owners and many of these people own many other shacks and sub-let them. All the rest are tenants with no rights. In Kibera there are no government clinics or hospitals. The medical providers are the charitable organizations: AMREF, MSF, churches plus some others. There are approximately 2.5 million slum dwellers in about 200 settlements in Nairobi representing 60% of the Nairobi population, occupying just 6% of the land. Kibera houses almost 1 Million of these people. Kibera is the biggest slum in Africa and one of the biggest in the world.
For My house will be called a house of prayer for all the peoples." Isaiah 56:7
You are most welcome to any of our two parishes for prayers each Sunday

Everyone, young and old alike came to the church hall as early as possible to witness and be part of the launching ceremony of the gospel music album and the first of its own in the Charismatic Episcopal Church in Kenya. At around 9am the St. Michaels choir had already taken its stage and was busy practicing the songs they would sing during the mass. The youths also took part in preparing the thanksgiving hymns. Everyone was very happy including the bishop who numerously congratulated Joyces achievements and asked the youths of the church to use well their talents for the greater glory of God. In his homily, the bishop said, Faith is the ..of what we dont see.. He added that Joyce had faith and believed that she would one day produce her album. Without even asking for any financial assistance from any member of the church, Joyce a primary school teacher managed to produce her first gospel music album from a scratch. When given chance to talk to the congregation, Joyce said that all is possible as long as one is focused and interested in achieving. I believe that each and every one of us has the ability to achieve what he/she wants as long as he shows the interest and above all trusts in the Lord The members of the clergy joined the faithful in congratulating Joyce and prayed for her in her dreams of becoming the Kenyan star gospel musician. On the same occasion, Mrs. Rose Ambia together with her children, not leaving her 2year old granddaughter volunteerd to offer cattery and serve free meals to all the people present for the launch of Joyces

Main Story
Word of
By Gordon Okumu t was on a hot Wednesday afternoon; a day that all members of the charismatic Episcopal church in Nairobi had been looking up to. I left my internship office in Westlands to come and meet the patriarch. My first stop was at the 5 star Serena Hotel. The shepherd of the Charismatic Episcopal Church in the world; His Eminence Patriarch Craig Bates was in Kenya and I was to take him alongside other people who travelled with him to St. Michaels CEC parish in Kibera. We got into the taxi and the hot afternoon turned to be full of adventure both for the Patriarchs team and me who was lucky to ride with the Patriarch in the same car on our first meeting. Within a few minutes, we were already out of the city center and the car was getting deep and deep into Nairobis and Africas largest slum area; Kibera. The distant drums and sound of song, What a friend we have in Jesus could
be clearly heard as we moved closer to the church. Though the road was muddy and slippery, the Bishop of the diocese of Nairobi, Most. Rev. Bernard Njoroge and his wife Hellen Njoroge lead His Eminence Patriarch Craig Bates who was accompanied by his wife Cathy Bates, Mrs. Kathie Davidson and Rev. Dcn. John Garret to St. Michaels CEC parish in Nairobis Kibera slums. I have come from the USA to tell you that the Lord loves you. These were the words of Patriarch Craig Bates when he arrived at St. Michaels Parish after alighting from the taxi and covering close to 100miters on foot in muddy corridors of the slums because the road turned narrow and narrower hence the car would not go through. The Patriarch had to fold his cassock from reaching the feet but this still did not help much because the cassock still touched down, and become dirty by the mud on the tiny muddy roads. However, his desire to bring the gospel to the people was never bothered by the difficulties he experienced
to reach the destination. In the church, the parishioners gathered together and waited patiently for the arrival of the Patriarch. I have been reading and seeing the pictures of the Patriarch online, but today, I have the opportunity to see him face to face, am very happy. said one of the faithful. On arrival, their shoes were muddy and their faces sweating due to the hot weather in Nairobi and difficulties in walking on the slippery muddy corridors. This touched the hearts of the members of the church whom the Patriarch came to visit and Robert Afwamba who is a parishioner at St. Michaels washed the Patriarchs and the whole teams shoes in reference to Jesus teaching to his disciples, if they accept you, and wash your shoes, leave a blessing, if they dont, dont leave even dust. The Parishioners could not hide their joy as they welcome the Patriarch to their shanty church. All of these members 11

faith. We get names such as Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham...verses 13 indicates that they never received what was promised, but they saw them coming. The people of Israel left Egypt under great hand of God. They believed in God. Verses 32 wrap it all by indicating that all these people archived much. Conquered kingdoms did miracles, raised the dead...all this happened because of faith. In his homily when he came to Kibera, the Patriarch said, we need also to have faith in life. Have faith that God is able to change our destitute lives, able to feed us, able to protect us from evil, able to give us strength when we are weak
To link love and faith, the patriarch mentioned on the need to keep hope alive. He felt the harsh conditions on which the people in slums leave in; poor sanity, poor health care and security. But this he indicated that we keep on hoping for good life through Jesus Christ. No one is able to bless us mightily with great goodness except Jesus. To me seeing Patriarch in our humble parish just fulfill what true hope, faith and love comes with....ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE FOR THOSE WHO BELIEVE IN THE LORD!! we welcome our patriarch again and believe that when he comes again, The bible indicates that love is Kind. Envy is the state of wishing to have a quality that one sees in another person which you actually do not have. We need to be contented with the state on which God has placed us in. He is the one who gives all good things to people. By trusting in Him on this, our heart gets satisfied in all ways. Let us always pray for all that we always need. This was also a lesson that we got from our Patriarch...it is important we keep them in our hearts for God's blessings to be achieved in our lives. ust as good food is essential for physical health, we must nourish our spirits in order to stay healthy and grow spiritually. We do that by reading or listening to the Bible and other faith-building material.
1. Pick a time and duration. Try setting aside at least 20 minutes daily for spiritual feeding through reading Gods Word. It is difficult to get much out of this time if you dont spend at least that long taking in and reflecting. If you arent able to fit it in daily, then try three or four days each week. Whatever you decide, make it a specific goal. It will be easier to follow through if you establish a definite time slot and make it part of your routine.
4. Pray before you read. Ask Jesus to help you concentrate and have an open heart so you can get as much as possible from this time. Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law (Psalm 119:18).
5. Read the Word carefully, prayerfully, and thoughtfully. If you were to gulp down a meal as fast as you could, you wouldnt get as much out of that food or enjoy it as much as you would by eating slower. The same principle applies to your spiritual food. To be nourished spiritually, you must take time to absorb what you read. 6. Apply what you read. When youre reading, often a certain point will stand out. You may have read the same passage before without grasping its meaning, but suddenly it comes to life and you understand how the spiritual principles apply to you personally.
2. Find a place. Find a quiet place to read where you will not be interrupted or distracted. You also might want to turn off your cell phone and stay away from your email.
3. Decide what to read. Its good to make a plan of what to read over a period of time, such as working your way through a book of the Bible or a devotional book, but be flexible. Some days, Jesus may direct you to something different.
The Bible was not given to increase our knowledge, but to change our lives. Dwight L. Moody
The Charismatic Episcopal Church
7. Put what you read into action. The only way you can really experience the power of the Word of God is by doing what it says to do. Be doers of the Word, the Bible admonishes us, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves (James 1:22). And Jesus Himself promised, If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them (John 13:17).
15
8. Keep a spiritual diary. Copy key points or passages from what you read into a special notebook for future reference, and make note of how it applies to you. Putting your thoughts about what you read into words serves two purposes: It crystallizes the lessons and reinforces them in your mind so you will be more likely to remember them when opportunities to apply them arise. You can also use this diary to record spiritual lessons and turning points or milestones in your relationships with Jesus and others that arent necessarily connected to your times of spiritual feeding.
10. Dont be overly concerned if you dont understand something. It is said that Augustine of Hippo (354430 ad) hit on this principle once when he was greatly perplexed about a particular aspect of faith. While walking by the seashore, he saw a little boy with a seashell repeatedly running to the waters edge, filling the shell with water, and pouring it into a hole in the sand. When Augustine asked what he was doing, the boy explained matter-of-factly that he was putting the ocean in the hole. That is what I am trying to do, Augustine realized. Standing on the shores of time, I am trying to get into this little finite mind of mine things which are infinite. Remember that the next time you come across something in your reading that you dont understand. If God wants you to understand that thing, He will reveal it to you in His time. Meanwhile, accept it by faith.
9. Memorize. For better or worse, whatever we take in through our senses, consciously or unconsciously, by choice or by chance, has an effect on our thinking and thus on our actions. But we can each choose what we want to change and motivate us most, and focus on that. If you want that to be Gods Word, commit to memory key Bible verses or points you come across in your times of spiritual feeding. Pray for those things to override all the resteverything from advertising jingles to ungodly attitudes and bad habitsand do your part by filtering your intake when possible. Your Word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You (Psalm 119:11). Scriptures that youve memorized will also be a source of comfort and strength in times of trouble or decision, as well as provide help and answers to share with others in need.
11. Dont worry about all the details of Bible history and geography. History and geography can be interesting, but spiritual principles are of far greater value. For example, when we read the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles, we see a pattern of love in action that we know we should try to follow; or when we read the Psalms and other devotional passages, we can apply thoughts and principles found there to our own prayers.
12. Spice it up. If youre new to Bible study, the Gospel of John is a great place to start, as it contains more words of Jesus than any other Gospel. The four Gospels, Psalms, and Proverbs are the most read (and most frequently reread) devotional books of all time, but dont stop there. Branch out. Variety is the spice of life and a key to making your times of spiritual feeding a cant-miss daily high point.
Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. Mark 11;24

Martyrs of Uganda
Dcn. Thaddeus and Gordon on the spot where Charles Lwanga was burned in 1886 A tour guide at the shrine by the name Michael, realized that I needed help and even without asking, he came to my aid. Hey, I am Michael the tour guide of this shrine, can I help you? he asked. This was very strange to me since in my country, we are never asked to be assisted by strangers. I was delighted. After I told him that I was a Kenyan journalist who wanted to know more about the Uganda Martyrs, Michael asked me to get into the shrine with him so that he may explain everything as it was. 17
We got into the shrine and as per the catholic customs; we dip our hands in the holy water jar right at the entrance of the shrine and made the sign of the cross on our faces before sitting. Welcome to Namugongo Shrine. He kept saying this whenever I asked a question. All his sentences started with this. According to Michael, at Namugongo, 32 young Christian con-
loyalty to work for the King. These young men believed in God after the missionaries came to Uganda and started teaching them prayers. They kept praying each day.
Michael shows us the statutes to commemorate the burning of the martyrs Michael the tour guide and my self inside the shrine
verts (Including 10 Anglicans & 22 Catholics) were martyred on refusal to denounce Christianity which was spreading like wildfire in Uganda right from 1875. This angered King Kabaka Mwanga II, prompting him to order the execution of the 32 men on Thursday 3rd June 1886. It is in the King's palace and Chiefs homes that the Martyrs began to learn religion after the coming of the Anglican and Catholic Missionaries in 1877 and 1879 respectively. The Christian Missionaries were invited by Kabaka Mutesa I, Mwanga's father, in his letter dated 14th April 1875 that was published in the Daily Telegraph of 15th November 1875 in England. Michael tells me that what angered the king the most and which caused the death of these young men was simply saying the Lords Prayer. From the Lords prayer, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done these words left Kabaka questioning who these young men were loyal to apart from him, whom they wanted his name to be hallowed, and whose kingdom to come. Kabaka believed that it was only the Kabaka kingdom that should be respected and wanted to hear the usual slogan of long live the Kabaka Kingdom and not any other Kingdom anywhere else. King Mwanga was very angry and he wanted everything about prayers to stop in Uganda. But since Christianity was spreading very fast, more people came to know God hence would not do the sinful demands of the king. From time to time he became angry with all Christians as they all refused to give in to his sinful demands and were persuading all other people to join them. On 25th May, 1886, King Mwanga ordered for a number of Christians to be brought before him and he passed on them the death penalty. Twenty of the thirty two martyrs were killed between 26th May 1886 and 3rd June 1886. Many of these young men were workforce in King Mwanga's palace while others were working in chives' homesteads. Each family was selecting very hardworking boys, well behaved too, to go and work for the King. It was prestigious and also a sign of

Some of the Martyrs were hacked to pieces like Andrew Kaggwa, Pontian Ngondwe, Mattias Mulumba and Denis Ssebuggwawo. Others were speared to death like Gonzaga Gonza. The Pavilion (Island) behind the shrine is another unique feature at Namugongo with a clear view that can be seen from all angles of the over 15 acres Shrine compound. It is inside this pavilion where the main celebrant sits on big occasions like Martyrs' day, June 3. This grass thatched pavilion, also in circular form like the Shrine is supported by 4 pillars and can accommodate more than 300 priests and a number of bishops that turn for the High Mass on Martyrs Day. Michael tells me that this lake was a small stream those days and after the kings men had killed anyone as ordered by the king, they would wash their hands in this stream to detar any bad omen that would follow them or their families. 18

NEW CEC MISSION IN WAKEFIELD MASSACHUSETTS On Saturday, February 18, Christ the King Church in Wakefield, Massachusetts became the newest mission in the CEC. The Most Reverend Craig Bates celebrated the Holy Eucharist and ordained Pastor Michael Carl to the priesthood and received the church as a mission of the Charismatic Episcopal Church. The Patriarch said in his sermon that the process has been a healthy one. I dont like to use the word journey, but it has been. Its been a long time coming and today is the fulfillment of that vision, the Patriarch said. Christ the King Church had its first worship service on Sunday, August 2, 2009 with an outdoor service at an area park. From the beginning, the church has had a youth group, a mens ministry, a womens Bible study and an adult Bible study. Christ the King Church officially began the process to join the CEC in 2010 with visits to CEC parishes in New Hampshire, Maine and New York.

The consecration of Bp. Igani created an ICCEC presence in Nigeria since he is the first Bishop in that country. The consecration of Bishop Biriki is a significant mark of reconciliation with clergy in Uganda. Finally, the consecration of Bishop Kome will provide much needed support in the Congo given the illness of Bp. Tibafa. Please keep these new bishops in prayer and they start their work.

Gardening
By Gordon Okumu o garden worth its name should be without herbs. They provide a multitude of uses and come in a wide variety. Herbs also serve medicinal, culinary and aromatherapy uses. Indeed in ancient Rome, Egypt and the Arabia, herbs were actively exploited for all these reasons. They are easy to grow. They prefer sunlight, good drainage and soils enriched with compost. If your soil is clay in nature, you can amend it by adding sand and compost. You can get herbs by taking cuttings from perennial herbs like rosemary, lavender, lemon balm, oregano, scented geranium among others and it is the easiest way to propagate. All you need is a growing medium like well drained compost and clean secateurs. Take a cutting of three leaves and on shoot from the side branches. Trim the stem to lowest leaf point and insert in into the damp compost in a pot. Since warmth is essential for germination, create a green house effect by warping the pot in a plastic bag. The moisture and heat will be trapped inside enabling the cuttings to grow for a few days without watering. Alternatively it also possible to put these cuttings directly into the soil, however this will call for regular watering and shading. Lets have a look at our all time favorable herbs: Rosemary Rosemary herb is exceptionally rich in many B-complex groups of vitamins, such as folic acid. Rosemary herb parts, whether fresh or dried, are rich source of minerals like potassium, calcium, iron, manganese, copper, and magnesium. Potassium is an
important component of cell and body fluids, which helps control heart rate and blood pressure. Manganese is used by the body as a co-factor for the antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase

Mint - The mints we are most familiar with are only a small part of a huge family of plants, many of which are quite invasive. An important source of menthol and flavoring in industry, mint is also a delight in the home garden when grown in pots or otherwise contained in the garden. This rampant grower comes in a variety of flavors from strong to mild, and lends itself well to many uses in the kitchen. Medicinally, the plant is completely safe and is best known as a digestive aid. Don't forget to pick a leaf and crush it between your fingers for some of the best aromatherapy around!

Oregano- This is a nice plant with either low, sprawling growth or an upright habit, depending on the type. The hot, peppery taste lends itself to many foods beyond the obvious Italian dishes it is best known for. Oregano has not been extensively studied medicinally, but is safe for consumption and is reported to be effective in a variety of minor medical complaints, such as digestion, bloating, flatulence, coughs, and headaches, to name a few.

Plantain - This plant is a tough survivor that most of us are very familiar with. It grows in sidewalk cracks, lawns, flower beds, Oregano roadsides and in waste areas and propagates itself very freely. It has a long taproot that will grow a new plant even if all the foliage is completely cut off. Many consider it Enemy #1 when they are doing battle with it in the middle of their manicured lawn. What most of us don't know, however, is that this is a Lavender - What can one say about Lavender? Remember that our story occurred as Jesus was making His way to Jairus house. Can you imagine how Jairus felt while Jesus spent time caring for the woman and listening to her story? He may well have had some compassion and joy for her, but his overwhelming concern was his little daughter who was dying. He knew that time was critical and he was probably desperate for Jesus to be on his way again to the house. And how terrible it must have been for him when messengers from his house arrive and shared with him the news that his daughter had died. The situation must have seemed hopeless as the messengers asked why bother the teacher anymore? (Mark 5:35). Of cause from mans perspective the situation was hopeless and it was time to begin mourning the loss of this little girl. In other words, Jesus saw the situation different than they did, and he had options beyond what they had ever experienced. The same can be true in our situation. We may think we are out of options and our cause is hopeless. But we do not reply know the truth we know how the lord sees our situation. We need to learn to trust in him with all our heart and learn not on our understanding. By his might power he is able to make away when there seems to be no way. If you are in the midst of a difficult or desperate situation I encourage you to make your way to the Lord as Jairus did. In his presence there is power and peace and possibilities far beyond your own. His solution may or may not be what you have in mind, but without adoubt you will discover that He is faithful to reward those who earnestly seek him. Be encounter with Jesus, have fresh intimacy with Christ, Take time in the word of God, time in prayer and God will speak to your heart. Eunice Msanga Pastor recently asked me what I would ask God if I had the chance of meeting with Him today. I have been thinking over and over about the best thing to ask from God if we meet face to face. Above all, Ill ask God to give more years to live so that I may change the world. I also think that Ill ask God to strengthen me to complete my studies and get a good paying job that can help me improve the life of my family. I will also ask God to cure the HIV/AIDS patients and to give us the medicine to AIDS. Another thing that I wont forget to ask God is to help our church to grow. I wish to see many and many people coming in to our church. And finally if I meet God today, Ill ask Him to after giving us all the above, to give me a good husband.

GOD IS WATCHING Children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Christian school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. Someone had written a note and placed it next to the apples. It read, "Take only one, God is watching." Moving through the line, to the other end of the table, was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. One little boy wrote his own note and snuck it next to the cookies, "Take all you want, God is watching the apples."
