come up with various musical forms. Through their use of modern technology and new techniques, they brought entirely new sounds. The most notable is the use of JAZZ elements in their works.

What is the function of music in the modern times? For most, the function of music today is for ENTERTAINMENT. For a few, it means BUSINESS. For instance, riding in a jeepney or any utility vehicle is
fun and wonderful when there is music over the radio. Today music can be accessed just about anywhere because of the rapid development of the music industry. Almost anybody could hear a variety of songs in
fields and rural areas, in concert halls, in opera houses, restaurants and even in our own homes. The MUSIC INDUSTRY creates and performs music, both in the forms of compositions and
performances. The MUSIC INDUSTRY is composed of: Singers Songwriters Musicians Musician Unions
Composers Publishers Writers Right Organization Record Industry (record producers, record companies, record labels, & record distributors)
Band Managers Tour Promoters Bookers Roadies
In the 19 century, the music industry was dominated by SHEET MUSIC PUBLISHERS. The group of music publishers and songwriters which dominated popular music in the U.S. was known as Tin Pan Alley.

Western music Country music In the early 20th century, the PHONOGRAPH INDUSTRY grew greatly in importance, and the RECORD INDUSTRY eventually replaced the SHEET
MUSIC PUBLISHERS as the industrys largest force. Many colleges, universities, parks in different communities and even malls played vital roles in our musical culture. Music today was very well
appreciated by everyone because of free concerts in malls, parks and music halls. There are classical compositions rearranged, revived and adapted to fit the music preferences of the modern society. An example of
this is the famous opera written by GIUSEPPE VERDI, AIDA, which is very popular in our present time during graduation ceremonies. BEETHOVENS ODE TO JOY, was used in Whoopi Goldbergs film, Sister
Act 2 in a very modern arrangement entitled JOYFUL, JOYFUL. POPULAR MUSIC, simply called as POP MUSIC, belongs to any of the number of contemporary musical styles
accessible to the general public and mostly distributed commercially. There are two meanings for POP MUSIC. the narrower meaning covers mainstream music that
does not fall into other convenient style such as JAZZ or HIPHOP. In the broader sense, popular music means any sort of music intended for mass consumption and
propagated over the radio and similar media. It is the product of the modern business enterprise and is disseminated for the purpose of earning a profit.

ROCK MUSIC includes elements of several black and white American musical styles. This is the music of the early 50s, rock music was initially referred to as ROCK N ROLL. From the late 1950s to the
mid 1990s, ROCK was perhaps the most popular form of music in the western world. Rock n Roll is played with an electric guitar, a bass guitar, a drum set, and often a piano or keyboard. ELVIS PRESLEY
reigned as The KING of Rock n Roll in the 1950s. The term rock n roll was first used in 1951 by ALLAN FREED, a Cleveland disc jockey, who took it from the song My Baby Rocks Me with a Steady Roll.
After 1964, it was simply called rock music. The changed in terminology indicates both a continuity with a break from the earlier; rock music was no longer just for dancing. The music was
influenced then by British groups such as the Beatles. The Beatles was considered as the most famous and successful band in the world. The group sold over 1.3 million albums.
The first single of The Beatles was Love Me Do only became a minor hit in the music chart. However, in 1963, the band released its second single Please, Please Me making it straight to No. 2 in U.K. Then,
following this No. 2 hit, From Me to You and She Loves You. The song She Loves You is an example of a Rock n Roll music by the Beatles. JAZZ MUSIC originated from the city of New Orleans, Lousiana in the 19th century.
White settlers, black slaves and mixed races meet together in a place called CONGO SQUARE- this is where black music was expressed and New Orleans was considered to be the
birthplace of Jazz. IMPROVISATION (creating music as it is played) is the most important element of Jazz. It is played in syncopated patterns. Early Jazz players are Buddy Bolden, who used a cornet;
Louis Armstrong, the first Jazz soloist who used a trumpet; & James Johnson, the first virtuoso jazz pianist. FOLK MUSIC is described as traditional songs being handed down from generation
to generation. It is the ordinary peoples music played in homes and for family or community gatherings. It also expressed the values, traditions and daily experiences of the people.
WESTERN MUSIC is the formalization of improvised traditions, growth of notation, the development of tuning systems; treatment of text and innovative approach to form are the things that influenced
and resulted to music in western culture. Western music benefits from dualities like SACRED and SECULAR traditions; MONOPHONE & POLYPHONE textures; CANON & NON-CANONIC
works from the middle ages up to the 21st century music. COUNTRY MUSIC had its beginnings in the music style brought by the first European settlers. In medieval times, storytelling was a tradition that
allowed history to be recorded since only a few were able to read and write. When the first British settlers came to America, they brought this tradition with them, along with songs they have learned in Europe. The people who
settled in the APPALACHIAN Mountains & the West did not have an easy life. Their music gave them an outlet to express their hardships. One numerous protest recordings such as Johnny Cash in Folsom Prison. However he
shifted to gospel music in the 1970s. Another country singer is CELINA GONZALES who performed Cubas country music (Musica Campesina in Spanish) with her husband Reutilio Dominguez on guitar
or bongos. The Fiddle (or violin) was the most common instrument because it was easy and inexpensive to make. It is also not a major burden to carry around.
At first, fiddle was the sole lead instrument, but later, it became one of the most popular accompanying instruments. The BANJO brought by slaves became popular in the mid 1800s.
The guitar came in the early 1900s when they became mass-produced and affordable for an ordinary person. At first, it was only a rhythm instrument but later, picking and plucking of strings to play the melody
became popular. Contemporary country music often uses the electric guitar; other stringed instruments include: the dobro dulcimer
steel guitar the mandolin zither bass guitar and the autoharp In other types of country music

In the century, composers invented new ways of writing down music that brought the emergence of popular music, jazz, folk, western and country music. Popular music became

Research and give two examples of compositions of the following musical styles. a. popular d. folk b. jazz e. country c. western music Which of the musical styles you like best? Why?
ACTIVITY:
Draw lots. The leaders of each group will draw by lots which of the musical styles they will perform. Let them practice the musical style they have drawn and perform in front of the class.
