Cognitive

Knowledge To be able to define distance learning.

Comprehension

Distinguish the difference between the synchronous and asynchronous type of classes.

Analysis

Examine the advantages and disadvantages of distance

learning.

Psychomotor

Demonstrate understanding of the discussion in terms of answering the quiz to be given afterwards.

Affective

Appreciate and understand distance learning and its

application.

Distance learning, sometimes called e-learning, is a formalized teaching and learning system specifically designed to be carried out remotely by using electronic communication.

"a process to create and provide access to

learning when the source of information and

the learners are separated by time and distance, or both.

It began over 150 years ago in the form of

correspondence, or home study courses (Reinert & Fryback, 1997) and has evolved to its newest form of Web-based courses.

Popular distance learning technologies include:

Voice-centered technology, such as CD or MP3 recordings or Webcasts Video technology, such as instructional videos, DVDs, and interactive videoconferencing Computer-centered technology delivered over the Internet or corporate intranet

Greater

access

to

information

and

to

higher

education those people in rural areas or in those homebound

Learners who travel for hours to attend classes can

now receive information in their homes

Accessibility to a larger variety of courses Ability to learn in ones own time frame and own pace,

self-directed nature of the learning experience Opportunity to learn more about technology Cost-saving for institutions providing the educational material

Lack of in-person face-to-face contact with the teacher

Technology glitches
System shutting down and being inaccessible May not be able to access the hardware and

software they need

Learning struggle to use the technology at the

time they require to be learning content

Less structure in the educational

experience Feelings of alienation

Roles of Site Coordinator Varies by Program

a. Site coordinator in program using off-site telecommunications

They encompass student recruitment, advisement and testing. Facilitator becomes a major source of professional and

emotional supports for the learners.

They hired to seek out and make formal arrangements with

preceptors.

Orientation of preceptors and evaluation of student learning is also part of the role.

b.

Some undergraduate program conducted via iTV.

They hired to teach the clinical courses.

Typical ITV Classroom contains:

-podium with control panel -large monitor in front -VCR attached to the front monitors

Compressed video technology is less expensive to install but is not as good like full motion video.

INSTRUCTOR

-may be intimidated -must be oriented to the equipments -must wear appropriate attire -avoid very light and very dark colors

-no shiny jewelry

STUDENTS

-need to be oriented to the equipments

Feelings of Alienation

trying to develop rapport with students

Learners are asked to state their names Addition of jokes Instructors should visit at least once,

each remote site

Involve students in group projects

Class Management

Plans must be made

mail course materials to all students

before the first class

single hand outs be faxed at remote sites

written exams must be prepared

Problems
presence of technician is essential classes should be videotaped

Uses of Interactive Television Interactive Television technology or iTV can be used to deliver information because it allows exchange of ideas between the teacher and the learner. It increases the students ability to control the learning process by taking an active part in the discussion.

Expand the access of learning

iTVs can be use to reach graphically dispersed populations or a remote group of people.

It provides information to the marginalized sectors

Promotes efficiency

It increases learning in just a short span of time

Improves the quality of learning

Motivates and engage the students to take part in the

learning process
Fosters inquiry and exploration

Develops skills that are necessary for the learners future

Technological Literacy Information Literacy

Communication Skills
Problem Solving Skills Ability to handle situations

Ability to work with others

Improves the quality of teaching

Teachers creativity, innovativeness and resourcefulness

Synchronous vs. Asynchronous Classes

Synchronous
Occurs when people interact in real

time electronically via the internet or an intranet. Asynchronous

Materials and prescribed activities are

located on a Web page or a podcast that can be accessed at anytime.

Webcasting

Newer and less expensive alternative to ITV technology. Synchronous Web-based, one-way au dio, streaming video, and multimedia technology.

Requires

personal

computers

for

instructor and students.

Requires Web-based software.

Podcasting

Asynchronous Web-based broadcast capable of conveying audio, picture and video files.

Course information is distributed over the Internet and then downloaded to a portable device or a desktop computer.

Online Courses

The theoretical framework often used is Constructivism. Constructivism is a cognitive learning theory

Learners build their own knowledge

from the information they encounter. The teacher serves as facilitator.

Advantages of Online Courses

Access to classes is even greater than with

telecommunication classrooms.
Learner does not have to leave home

Convenience is maximized in asynchronous learning formats.

Learner can learn anywhere and anytime

They cause the participants to be active constructivist learners.

Learners can use all of the modules, can skip

over familiar material or can choose the sequence that fits his/her learning style

Disadvantages of Online Courses

Some courses are totally learner controlled

Lower retention rates among students

Problems with generating interaction among learners. Visual cues and body language are absent Clarifications and feedback are not immediately given Technology can also be a drawback in learning

Some students do not own or have ready access to computers Old learners may not have enough computer literacy Problems in uploading files or compatibility of the computers

Teachers spend more time in typing comments in their students work Writing e-mail messages for instructions take longer than face to face discussions

Technology Glitches add more workload

Development of Online Courses

Higher Education institutions involved in Online Education:

WebCT Blackboard eCollege Lotus Learning Space

These system provide a platform or structure into

which course documents, activities, discussion

questions, and support tools can be inserted.

The Course content should begin with:

Welcome note from the instructor Information about the instructor Goal for the course Overall picture of course organization Contact Information Technical Help

The Course content can be delivered by:

Textbooks Online periodicals with reading guides Summaries Questions Power Point Presentations Digital Pictures

Different Teaching Strategies:

Simulations Debates Problem based learning exercises

Logs and Journals

Quizzes and Examinations may also given via the

Website

Discussion forums are important part of online methodology.

Good online discussion require planning. They must decide whether the course discussion are going to be Synchronous or Asynchronous.
