What are Wastes?

Basel Convention Definition of Wastes Substances or objects which are disposed of or are intended to be disposed of or are required to be disposed of by the provisions of the law Disposal means Any operation which may lead to resource recovery, recycling, reclamation, direct re-use or alternative uses (Annex IVB of the Basel convention)

Kinds of Wastes
Solid wastes: domestic, commercial and industrial wastes
especially common as co-disposal of wastes Examples: Plastics, Styrofoam containers, bottles, cans, papers, scrap iron, and other trash

Liquid Wastes: wastes in liquid form

Examples: Domestic washings, chemicals, oils, waste water from ponds, manufacturing industries and other sources

Classification of Wastes according to their Properties

Bio-degradable
Can be degraded (paper, wood, fruits and others)

Non-biodegradable
Cannot be degraded (plastics, bottles, old machines, cans, Styrofoam containers and others)

Hazardous wastes Substances unsafe to use commercially, industrially, agriculturally, or economically that are shipped, transported to or brought from the country of origin for dumping or disposal in, or in transit through, any part of the territory of the Philippines

Integrated System For Waste Management

Agenda 21 addressed the problem of waste

management stating that sound management of waste is among the major environmental issues for maintaining the quality of earths environment and achieving sustainable development .

Waste Management is to be done through the systems

Minimum production of waste. Maximising reuse of waste and recycling. Promoting environmentally sound waste disposal

practices. Extending waste services.

10

Minimum production of waste.

Consumption patterns and waste production are linked as also the life style. If consumption is more production will increase resulting in increased waste production. Identify and adopting clean technologies. Encouraging industry to change product design and reduce industrial process waste. Producing products which have longer life, thus cutting down total production.
11

Maximising reuse of waste and recycling.

The reuse of product means using same product over and over in its original form.
To encourage the use of recyclables. Identify potential markets for recycled products.

12

Promoting environmentally sound waste disposal practices.

Recycling and reuse. Landfills. Composting Incineration

13

Extending waste services.

Establish financial mechanisms for waste management

services in deprived areas. Apply polluter pays principle by setting waste management charges for those who generate the wastes.
