Critical Thinking
Critical thinkers are skeptical - even about what they agree or have had success. Critical thinkers are flexible - able to examine all sides of an issue and learn from valid sources of information. Critical thinkers are able to identify inherent biases and assumptions. Critical thinkers are able to separate facts from opinions. Critical thinkers don't oversimplify. Critical thinkers use logical inference processes. Critical thinkers examine available evidence before drawing conclusions.
The Dilemma
1. Goal Displacement describes what happens when complying with bureaucratic processes becomes the objective rather than focusing on organizational goals and values. 2. When that happens, systems take on a life of their own and seem immune to common sense. 3. Thoughtless application of rules and procedures can stifle innovation, hamper adaptivity, and dash creativity. 4. Wholesale disregard of rules and procedures, however, can be equally disastrous.
