DEFINITE AND INDEFINITE ARTICLES

There are two types of articles in the English language: the definite article (the) and the indefinite article (a, an).
A strawberry.

An orange.

The girl who has a camera.

DEFINITE ARTICLES
The is the definite article. It is used before singular or plural nouns that are specific or particular for both, the person speaking and the listener. Examples: 1.- The man who lives next door to my sister is really nice. This refers to a particular man: the man who lives next door. 2.- The American president is a busy man. There is only one president, so we are referring to a specific noun here.

DEFINITE ARTICLES
3.- I love the gifts you gave me. We are talking about particular gifts, the ones you gave me.

4. The dog over there is cute. We know which dog we are talking about, it is a particular dog.

INDEFINITE ARTICLES
A / an are the indefinite articles. We use a / an before general, non-specific nouns or to indicate membership in a group. A / an can only be used with countable singular nouns. Examples: 1.- Carlos eats an egg everyday. Here, egg belongs to a group: eggs. We use "an" instead of "a" because egg" starts with a vowel sound. 2.- I saw a movie last night. We aren't talking about a specific movie, as we haven't said which movie we saw. We use "a" instead of "an" because movie" begins with a consonant sound.

INDEFINITE ARTICLE
Los artculos indefinidos para los sustantivos en singular pueden ser A (se usa con sustantivos que comiencen con sonido consonntico) y AN ( se usa con sustantivos que comiencen con sonido voclico). Examples: a university a chair an orange an hour *Tambin podemos usar one ( number 1 ) en lugar del artculo A AN .
It is an egg.

DEFINITE AND INDEFINITE ARTICLES

The first time you speak of something use "a or an", the next time you repeat the same object use "the". Examples: 1.- I live in a house. The house is old and has four bedrooms. 2.- Susan ate in an Italian restaurant. The restaurant was excellent. DO NOT use an article with countries, states, counties or provinces, lakes and mountains except when the country is a collection of states such as "The United States". 1.- They live in northern Colombia. 2.- Esther lives in Huaraz near Pastoruri Snow mountain.

DEFINITE AND INDEFINITE ARTICLES

Use an article with bodies of water, oceans and seas. 1.- My country borders on the Pacific Ocean. DO NOT use an article when you are speaking about things in general. Examples: 1.- She likes reading poems. 2.- I like apples.
