What is video telephony?

Technology overview

Introduce

Videotelephony comprises the technologies for

the reception and transmission of audio-video signals by users at different locations, for communication between people in real-time.

Videotelephony in the 21st century, as imagined in

1910

Technology overview

Motivation

The world's first public video telephone service

was developed by Dr. Georg Schubert.

Technology overview

Motivation

Nowadays, the widest deployment of video

telephony now occurs in mobile phone.

Technology overview

Motivation

As nearly all mobile phones supporting UMTS

networks can work as videophones using their
internal cameras, and are able to make video calls wirelessly to other UMTS users in the same

country or internationally

As of the second quarter of 2007, there are over

131 million UMTS users on 134 networks in 59 countries.

Technology overview

Protocol

Videoconferencing in the late 20th century was

limited to the H.323 protocol

Another protocol used by videophones is H.324,

which mixes call setup and video compression.

3G video telephony is possible using the 3G324M protocol over a circuit-switched

connection.

Technology overview
3G-324M overview

Protocol

3G-324M is based on the ITU H.324 standard

and is designed to send several different channels over low bit rate networks.

The 3G-324M point-to-point protocol is usually

used to open single audio and video channels

between two handsets. This limits the features

and capabilities of mobile video telephony.

Technology overview

Protocol

3G-324M is composed of the following sub-protocols:

ITU-T H.245 for call control ITU-T H.223 for bit streams to data packets multiplexer/demultiplexer

ITU-T H.223 Annex A and B for error handling of

low and medium BER detection, correction and concealment ITU-T H.324 with Annexes A and C for operating in wireless environment

The 3G-324M specification using the Circuit switched

network allows delay sensitive conversational
multimedia services such as: Videoconferencing for personal and business use

Multimedia entertainment services

Telemedicine Surveillance Live Video Broadcasting Cable TV On-the-Go Video-on-demand (movies, news clips)

Channels

There are 4 channel in 3G-324:

Technology overview

Channels

Control channel
It pass control commands and indications to remote counterparts. Terminal-to-modem control conforms to [ITUT V.250] Terminal-to-terminal control is according to [ITU-T H.245]

Technology overview
Audio channel

Channels

It use for tranfer audio signal

All ITU-T H.324 terminals offering audio

communication shall support both the high

and low rates of the ITU-T G.723.1 audio codec. ITU-T G.723.1 receivers shall be capable of accepting silence frames

Technology overview

Channels

Video channel
It use for traffer video signal All ITU-T H.324 terminals offering video communication shall support both the ITU-T H.263 and ITU-T H.261 video codecs There are five standardized image formats: 16CIF, 4CIF, CIF, QCIF and SQCIF

Technology overview

Channels

Data Channal
All data channels are optional. Standardized options for data applications include: ITU TT.120,ITU-TT.84,ITU-TT.434,ITUTH.224,ITU-TT.30 ,ITU-TT.140;

What is Quality of Service?

QoS

Quality of Service carries different

connotations for different people It is the end users who pay for the service, and whose perspectives matter most. From an end users perspective, QoS defines the

characteristics of service delivery that impact

most critically his/her perception of the service

Technology overview

QoS

The three main characteristics of a network delivering QoS to an end user are as follows: Availability of the service Quality of information Consistent delivery

Technology overview

QoS

At a technical level, QoS is characterized by a set of measurable parameters such as: Service availability Delay Delay variation Throughput

Packet loss rate

Technology overview

QoS

UMTS QoS Classes: UMTS define four different classes:

Conversational class. Streaming class. Interactive class. Background.

3G Video Telephony Deployments

3G VIDEO TELEPHONE DEPLOYMENTS

1. In Vietnam 2. In Foreign Networks

3G VIDEO TELEPHONE DEPLOYMENTS

In Vietnam

Now, Vietnam has 16 million 3G subscribers, representing 15% of

the national population. For those who use the non-smartphone, 14% will use data services, while 48% of smartphone users will use the registration data services. Value-added services will be difficult to develop without a device and a platform necessary to use it The basic elements: Smart: Provide different service quality with flexible service package costs so as to maximize revenue Simple: help reduce network operating costs by simplifying the network architecture and maximize the quality of the transmission network and traffic Scalable: Ensure network expansion while saving costs Superior: Ensure end network performance (for end users) always achieve the best quality. Secure: Aways be safe from external threats, the exchange of information on which to have high security.

3G VIDEO TELEPHONE DEPLOYMENTS

In Vietnam

The units granted 3G licenses: Vinaphone Viettel Mobifone EVN Telecom and Ha Noi Telecom

3G VIDEO TELEPHONE DEPLOYMENTS

In Vietnam

This is the first unit which deployed 3G service(10/2009) Coverage nationwide with 6 milion people who used 3G(35,92% of nationwide) Internet Services speed height: Mobile Internet, Mobile Broadband Three basic services: Video call, Mobile Camera Entertaiment services: Mobile TV, 3G Portal

Three basic services: Video call, Mobile Internet, D-com 3G Seven value-added services: MobiTV, Imuzik 3, Mclip, Vmail, Game... With 8,000 3G stations completed the installation Coveraged 63 provinces and cities in the country

3G VIDEO TELEPHONE DEPLOYMENTS

In Vietnam

With 3,500 3G stations completed the installation capacity to serve up to four times. Download speed up to 21 Mbps and upload is 5.76 Mbps Three basic services: Video call, Mobile Camera Entertaiment services: Mobile TV, 3G Portal

EVN Telecom will provide consumers with a number of other value-added services such as video phone, locate and find information, Internet access, large-capacity data transmission, listen to music and watch video qualityhigh.

3G VIDEO TELEPHONE DEPLOYMENTS

In Foreign Networks

In Asia, the first national 3G network is widely used in Japan. In 2001, NTT Docomo is the first company to release a commercial version of the W-CDMA network. In 2003, 3G services started in Europe. In Africa, the first 3G network was introduced in Morocco in late March 2007 by Wana Company.
