Whats a Final Year Project?

The final year project is required to seek individual analysis and judgement, capable of being assessed independently from the work of others. The student is expected to develop techniques in literature review and information processing. It is recommended that final year projects should also provide opportunities to utilise appropriate modern technology in some aspect of the work, emphasising the need for engineers to make use of computers and multimedia technology in everyday practice.

Information

Pre-requisite
Part 1: 84 credit hours of core subjects (excluding arts

and humanities subjects) Part 2: EPT4046 Project Part 1 & EPT4066 Industrial Training

Objectives

Aim of the project

To expose students to the techniques and skills

involved project planning, design, implementation and management To enable students to acquire hands-on experience in fields related to their major of study so that they are able to relate and reinforce what has been taught in the class

Objectives (2/5)

At the completion of the subject, students should achieve five learning outcomes
Apply problem solving skills to solve a particular

engineering problem Demonstrate capability to work independently Carry out project planning, design, implementation and management Prepare and write a scientific/technical report to disseminate results and findings of the project Communicate results and findings of the project through oral presentation
6

Objectives (3/5)

And these learning outcomes are tied to ten programme outcomes

Capability to communicate effectively Acquisition of technical competence in specialised

areas of engineering discipline Ability to identify, formulate and model problems and find engineering solutions based on a systems approach Ability to conduct investigation and research on engineering problems in a chosen field of study
7

Objectives (4/5)

Programme outcomes (cont.)

Understanding of the importance of sustainability and

cost-effectiveness in design and development of engineering solutions Understanding and commitment to professional and ethical responsibilities Ability to work effectively as an individual, and as a member/leader in a team

Objectives (5/5)

Programme outcomes (cont.)

Ability to be a multi-skilled engineer with good

technical knowledge, management, leadership and entrepreneurship skills Awareness of the social, cultural, global and environmental responsibilities as an engineer Capability and enthusiasm for self-improvement through continuous professional development and life-long learning

Plagiarism

Definitions of plagiarize
To copy another persons ideas, words or work and pretend that they are your own
-- Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary

To steal and pass off the ideas or words of another as ones own; to use anothers production without crediting the source
-- Merriam-Webster Dictionary

19

Plagiarism (2/7)

Why do it?
Students may feel pressured to complete papers well and quickly, and with the accessibility of the Internet, students can plagiarize by copying and pasting information from other sources very conveniently. This is often easily detected by teachers because it is easy to tell whether a student used his or her own voice.

Plagiarism (6/7)

How not to do it?

When the work of another author is referred to in academic writing, there are 3 ways to incorporate this into your work:
Summary - The authors original words are rewritten into a substantially shortened form that captures the most important elements. Paraphrase - The authors original words are substantially rewritten, but the original meaning is retained. Direct quotation - Usually a short phrase where the original wording is very important; it is essential that the words quoted verbatim are clearly indicated using quotation marks () and/or by using italics, indented paragraphs etc.

Plagiarism check
The student shall submit his/her report, by the chapters, to

Turnitin.com to generate the Originality Report; refer to Section 4.2 of The Final Year Report Template And Guidelines for instructions on how this is done The similarity percentages in this report are to be recorded in the Similarity Index Form, and justifications must be provided for any chapters with similarity index above 10% Both the Originality Report and the Similarity Index Form (endorsed by the supervisor) are to be submitted separately with the softcover report during examination

the appointment if you cannot make it for the appointment

Do not hide when you hit a dead end

Quickly seek advice from your supervisor if you do not know

how to proceed with your FYP

Do not procrastinate in your FYP

It is your responsibility to set up regular weekly appointments

with your supervisor and to update him/her on your progress

And always back up your work! For more info:
