Historical Background

Was developed during World War 2. At that time there was a need for people to learn foreign languages rapidly for military purposes. There were at the time exciting new ideas about language and learning emanating from the disciplines of descriptive linguistics and behavioral psychology, that led to the development of the Audio- Lingual Method.

Objectives
The aim of this method is: to make students able to use the target language communicatively and automatically without stopping to think; and... to help students to acquire the structural patterns. accurate pronunciation and grammar.

Theory of learning
Behaviorism, including the following principles:

language learning is habit-formation. mistakes are bad and should be avoided, as they make bad habits. analogy is a better foundation for language learning than analysis the meanings of words can be learned only in a linguistic and cultural context .

Principles

Language skills are learned more effectively if they are presented orally first, then in written form. Using dialogues and repeat orally in order to memorize in tiny parts in form of drills.

Promoting the use of mother tongue in class. Use frequently Contrastive Analysis. Effort to prevent linguistic errors. Doesnt matter the contexts or the meaning of the language. The teacher has to handle the structures, vocabulary,etc that he is teaching. Material was already chosen.

The Methods

Dialogue, little explanation, repetition and memorization about every day situation that are imitated and drilled to make the response automatic.

What teachers do?


Class in the target language Drills focusing on gramatical concepts to avoid first language Create a lively atmosphere to keep studentss attention during drills Require students to answer in full sentences Lead students through oralpartice of dialogues Have students lead to pronunce in the target language forms, BEFORE, they write them.
