Introduction of Image compression

Image compression is an application of data compression on digital images. Image compression is minimizing the size in bytes of a graphics file without degrading the quality of the image. The reduction in file size allows more images to be stored in a given amount of disk or memory space. It also reduces the time required for images to be sent over the Internet or downloaded from Web pages. There are several different ways in which image files can be compressed. Mainly two broad categories: Lossless compression. Lossy compression. Lossless compression is preferred for artificial images such as technical drawings, icons or comics. Lossless compression methods may also be preferred for high value content, such as medical image. Lossy methods are especially suitable for natural images such as photos in applications where minor loss of fidelity is acceptable.

Why Medical Compression?

Medical science grows very fast now a days and hence each hospital needs to store high volume of data about the patients. And medical images are one of the most important data about patients. As a result hospitals have a high volume of images with them and require a huge hard disk space. Estimate of 1 million images per annum, 2 terabytes storage capacity. To solve this problem Image compression is useful because it helps to reduce the consumption of expensive resources, such as hard disk space.

SPIHT
Set partitioning in hierarchical trees presented by A. Said and W. A. Pearlman, offers an alternative explanation of the principles of its operation, so that the reasons for its excellent performance can be better understood. SPIHT is the wavelet based image compression method. It provides the

Good image quality. High PSNR. Exact Bit rate. Image Size is Reduced.

Region of Interest
ROIs medical image compression algorithm includes following steps: Choose ROIs by hand. Image data separation: After choosing ROIs, image is divided into ROIs and non-ROIs. Image compression: After the separation of image data, the coefficient matrix of image data is send to SHIPT and get the compressed Image.
