Sector Overview

The cement industry is the building block of the nation's construction industry.

Few construction projects can take place without utilizing cement somewhere in the design.
Annual cement industry shipments are currently estimated at $10.0 billion for 2008; down from $15.0 billion in 2006. U.S. cement production is widely dispersed with the operation of 113 cement plants in 36 states. The top five companies collectively operate 54.4% of U.S. clinker capacity with the largest company representing 15.9% of all domestic clinker capacity. An estimated 80.0% of U.S. clinker capacity is owned by companies headquartered outside of the U.S.

KEY IMPACTS, RISKS & OPPORTUNITIES

Risks and Opportunities Ambujas Initiatives

Energy Securing energy resources, primarily coal, remains critical in view of availability per se, quality and substantial cost impact The Company has taken up projects like Geo20 to increase usage of alternative fuels, Waste Heat Recovery (WHR) systems to improve fuel utilization efficiency, etc. to mitigate the fuel associated risks. Renewable energy sources for power, such as wind and hydro, are also becoming increasingly important.
The Company recently commissioned its first wind power project in Gujarat. Water availability With increasing global pressure on the available water resources, there is strong need to exercise maximum conservation efforts. ACLs focuses on water management with this it makes efforts for giving back to nature and society by increasing water credits through conservation, water harvesting and recharge.

Risks and Opportunities Climate change

Ambujas Initiatives

ACL sees both risks and opportunities due to climate change. The Company is exposed to physical risks. Rising sea level create problems in port Operations. The Company also has two large manufacturing facilities in water scarce region

The Company has a Climate Change Mitigation Policy and has embraced the Reduce Engage Influence concept. The impact minimization strategy involves: I. Reduction in Clinker factor; II. Improving thermal energy efficiency and process technology; III. Optimizing fuel composition, including the use of wastes as fuel and IV. Waste Heat Recovery.

Mining The key challenges associated with the mining operations are land acquisition, mineral distribution, ground water table intersection and mine rehabilitation It adopt state-of-the-art mining techniques with due regards to pollution control, environment preservation and safe mining. Eco friendly mining is being undertaken at mining sites of ACL

Measures adopted by ACL

Innovative practices and technology in production process Use of selective mining techniques Use of alternate raw materials and natural cementing material Whole of life approaches Environmental friendly movement of cement consignments Water management Water treatment measures Sewage water reclamation plant Recycling and reuse of materials Using alternative fuels and reusing waste materials Energy conservation

Use of selective mining techniques

Conventional method Deep hole drilling, blasting and vibration Measures adopted by ACL:

Adoption of field research blast design, use raydents and noiseless trunk line detonators Measurement of ground vibrations with seismographs Dust separation Constructions of check dams, toe walls, settling tank and garland drains Land use / land cover monitoring

Use of alternate raw materials and natural cementing material

Replacement

of primary raw materials Supplementary cementatious materials and mineral additions Power station fly ash and granulated blast furnace slag or limestone fines These mainly substitute for clinker in cement

Whole of life approaches

Many stages in limestone mine life time From exploration and development to continuous operation to closure and restoration Rehabilitation activities need to be integrated into ongoing operational activities Restoration also extends to biodiversity and wildlife habitats Created habitat for migrating Siberian cranes in India Leftover mining basins sanctuary Fodder fields, rock gardens

Environmental friendly movement of cement consignments

Conventional

transportation of cement Roads

and Rail Diesel High emissions of nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and particulate matter Innovated use of sea route Efficient, environment friendly and effective means of transporting cement

Water management
Domestic Sewage water from colony treated through septic tank soak pit or by conventional activated sludge treatment system Treated water discharged in receiving systems like nalla, river, land etc. For further refinement implemented Sewage Water Reclamation Plant (SWRP) philosophy Taken a leadership role and set up the trend for complete treatment of water and 100% recycling

Water Treatment Measures

Measures

taken to use water efficiently Invested heavily in reverse osmosis process, both in terms of designing and operating the plants Ultimate objective of separating the pure water from a concentrated solution Also the objective of dust suppression at limestone mines and increasing the green cover

Sewage water reclamation plant

Installed a sewage water reclamation plant of 1500m3/day capacity Treated water is recycled for plant cooling, irrigation and dust suppression

Recycling and reuse of materials

Uses fly-ash, environmentally dangerous by-product of thermal power plants Also succeeded in engineering modifications in the plant to use agricultural waste and industrial waste

Using alternate fuels

Necessity of a cement industry to source alternative fuels as substitutes for fossil fuels such as coal and gas Alternative fuels includes used tyres, solvents and used oil Maximum recovery of energy from industrial byproducts and wastes- major factor of cost reduction Further leading to the elimination of the need of disposal of slag and ash

Efforts for energy consumption

Energy efficient equipments are selected along with implementation of various energy saving measures A Development and Energy Cell has been set up Some of the activities carried out by the cell - continuous monitoring of heat and power consumption - conducting regular energy audits - conducting regular meetings with all the departments - formulation of proposals for energy saving
