Introduction

Petroleum Engineering?
Petroleum Latin 'petra' (rock) + Latin: oleum (oil)/ crude oil is a naturally occurring Flammable liquid

Petroleum is recovered through Drilling

Petroleum is used in manufacturing a wide variety of materials and it is estimated that the world consumes about 88 million bbls each day Petrol (or gasoline) and kerosene to asphalt and chemical reagents used to make plastics & pharmaceuticals

Petroleum Engineering?
Petroleum engineering is a field of engineering concerned with the activities related to the production of hydrocarbons which can be either crude or natural gas. Exploration and Production are deemed to fall within the upstream sector of the oil and gas industry. The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is the largest professional society for petroleum engineers and publishes much information concerning the industry

Petroleum Engineering?
Types
Petroleum engineering divided into 3 main types: Reservoir Engineering Drilling Engineering Production Engineering

Reservoir engineering applies scientific principles to the

drainage problems arising during the development and production of oil and gas reservoirs so as to obtain a high economic recovery.

Reservoir Engineering
The working tools of the reservoir engineer are subsurface geology, applied mathematics, and the basic laws of physics and chemistry governing the behavior of liquid and vapor phases of crude oil, natural gas, and water in reservoir rock.

Reservoir Engineers often specialize in two areas:

Surveillance (or production) engineering, i.e. monitoring of existing
fields and optimization of production and injection rates. Surveillance engineers typically use analytical and empirical techniques to perform

their work, including decline curve analysis, material balance

modeling, and inflow/outflow analysis.

Reservoir Engineering
Simulation modeling, i.e. the conduct of reservoir simulation

studies to determine optimal development plans for oil and gas

reservoirs. Also, reservoir engineers perform and integrate well tests into their data for reservoirs in geothermal drilling.

So
Reservoir Engineers work to optimize production of oil and gas via proper well placement, production rates, and enhanced oil recovery techniques.

Drilling Engineering
Drilling engineering is a subset of Petroleum Engineering Drilling engineers design and implement procedures to drill wells

as safely and economically as possible

Designing well programs (e.g., casing sizes and setting depths) to prevent blowouts (uncontrolled well-fluid release) while allowing adequate formation evaluation Designing or contributing to the design of casing strings and cementing plans, directional drilling plans, drilling fluids programs, and drill string and drill bit programs

Drilling Engineering
Specifying equipment, material and ratings and grades to be used in the drilling process. Performing cost estimates and analysis. Developing contracts with vendors.

Production Engineering
Production engineering is a subset of petroleum engineering Production Engineers, including Subsurface Engineers , manage the interface between the reservoir and the well, including perforations, sand control, downhole flow control, and downhole monitoring equipment; evaluate artificial lift methods; and also select surface equipment that separates the produced fluids (oil, natural gas, and water).

Production Engineers' responsibilities include:

Evaluating inflow and outflow performance between the reservoir
and the wellbore.

Production Engineering
Designing completion system, including tubing selection,
perforating, sand control, matrix stimulation, and hydraulic fracturing.

Selecting artificial lift equipment, including sucker-rod lift (typically

beam pumping), gas lift, electrical submersible pumps, subsurface hydraulic pumps, progressing-cavity pumps, and plunger lift.

Selecting equipment for surface facilities that separate and

measure the produced fluids (oil, natural gas, water, and impurities), prepare the oil and gas for transportation to market, and handle disposal of any water and impurities.
