A servomotor is a ROTARY ACTUATOR that allows for precise control of angular position. When the objective of the system is to control the position of an object then the system is called Servomechanism. These are used to convert the applied Electrical signal to an Angular displacement of the shaft.

A closed-loop motion system using a current amplifier, servo controller, servomotor and a position feedback device such as an encoder to precisely control speed and position of a load. The motor can be electric, hydraulic, pneumatic or even internal combustion. The feedback sensor can be mechanical or electronic, analog or digital and it can be rotary or linear.

In general ac servo motor is a two phase Induction motor. The rotor construction is usually squirrel cage type. The stator consists of two pole pairs mounted on the inner periphery of the stator such that their axes are at an angle of 90 degrees in space.

Servos are controlled by sending them a pulse of variable width. The angle is determined by the duration of a pulse that is applied to the control wire. This is called Pulse width Modulation. The servo expects to see a pulse every 20 ms. The length of the pulse will determine how far the motor turns. Servos will not hold their position forever though, the position pulse must be repeated to instruct the servo to stay in position.

The control wire is used to communicate the angle. The angle is determined by the duration of a pulse that is applied to the control wire. This is called Pulse Coded Modulation. The servo expects to see a pulse every 20 milliseconds. The length of the pulse will determine how far the motor turns.

Linear relationship between the speed and electrical control signal. Steady state stability. Wide range of speed control. Linearity of mechanical characteristics throughout the entire speed range. Low mechanical and electrical Inertia. Fast response to the signal.

It consists of rotor, control Winding, ,amplifier and Modulator.

There are a quite large applications of servo motors in the modern technology. In fact almost every new technological development uses Servo motors.

In this application, sheet material is fed into a press where it is cut off to length with a knife blade or sheer. The sheet material may have a logo or other advertisement that must line up registration marks with the cut-off point. In this application the speed and position of the sheet material must be synchronized with the correct cut-off point.

In this application 10 nozzles are mounted on a carriage that is driven by a ball-screw mechanism. The ball-screw mechanism is also called a lead screw. When the motor turns the shaft of the ball screw, the carriage will move horizontally along the length of the ball-screw shaft. This movement will be smooth so that each of the nozzles can dispense product into the bottles with little spillage. The servo drive system utilizes a positioning drive controller with software that allows the position and velocity to be tracked as the conveyor line moves the bottles.

Robotics: These motors are of the highest importance in robotics as they facilitate intelligent and natural movement. It can transmit information regarding the rotation of the motor on its axis, thus keeping the robot aware of the movement of its various parts.

Movement Control: The servo motor's capacity for sensitive operation makes it a vital component in many industries. As well as its use in remote controlled vehicles, these motors are essential for dynamic responses in commercial aircraft, vehicle cruise control, as well as machine tools and steam turbines. These motors are useful in any application in which precise movement is required. It has been used to aid the movement of antennae used in military detection systems, particularly those located in harsh environments with rough weather conditions.

Remote Controlled Devices: These motors are an essential component to anything with remotely controlled movement, from simple children's toys to more sophisticated models. Specifically, servo motors are used in remote controlled vehicles to precisely move control surfaces. These include the elevators which control the pitch of an aircraft and the rudders of a ship, submarine or aircraft which steer the vehicle through air or water. The servo in remote controlled cars, for instance, will perform throttle control, braking, steering and engaging gears in forward or reverse.

Other military applications for this type of motors include Fire-control. Marine navigation. Antiaircraft-gun systems. Servo motors facilitate the highly precise mechanisms needed in the glass industry, such as the need to cut specific amounts of molten glass to a quality finish. Servos are also used in many auto-focus cameras, to accurately position the lens and adjust the focus. The precision of servo motors is used to advantage in modern hard disk drives for the speed of the disk's rotation.
