It’s your turn to be the

scientist!
Goal: My goal is to figure out the
reasons why the dinosaurs became
extinct. I have to use my observation
skills to look at the surrounding

next
environment to find out what went
What I Already know:
vAnimals need certain things to stay
alive:
üFood and Water
üShelter 2

üPerfect Temperature Outside

vWhen animals don’t get enough of
these things, they die, and
sometimes become extinct.

next
vDinosaurs are the same way!
Solve the mystery
On the main screen there are many different
areas to explore including the volcano,
water, and soil.

To get out your virtual microscope, click on

the word. You will be able to see each area
up close.

Next, to pull out your virtual encyclopedia,

just click on the book while you are looking
under the microscope.

2
If you look at the soil, there are different
layers.
When the layers don’t match in a

perfect line, it means that an
earthquake probably occurred.
Earthquakes can be caused by asteroid

impacts.
The ground shakes, and some plants
die. Falling rocks can be dangerous.

happens when an earthquake

Volcanoes
1
Volcanoes often erupt when an impact
from an asteroid occurs.

2Hot ash and lava spread over the

land and air during an eruption.

3 The land around the volcano for

miles becomes hot. Plants can’t
survive in the intense Scientific
heat. Findings

When there is a lot of smoke coming from a

mountainous area, it usually means that a
volcanic eruption is occurring.

The ash in the smoke is very hot. When
breathed in, it can damage lungs.

Asteroids have “iridium” inside their

rocks.

When asteroids hit the ground, it creates

a crater.
Asteroid impacts often cause other natural

EVALUATION
Now that you have completed the “Science
Discovery Challenge”, you should know a lot
more about natural disasters, and should’ve
reinforce how animals become extinct.
All living things need certain things to stay
alive. Dinosaurs have similar needs to animals
from today.
CLASS DISCUSSION: Did all the dinosaurs
become extinct? Maybe some were able to find
enough food to live. Give examples of
dinosaurs that are still around today.

next
Answer to discussion
DISCUSSION ANSWERS

Not all dinosaurs became extinct.

The ones that were able to adapt to
their environment were able to
survive.
Some examples are: alligators, birds,
and lizards.

next
ASSIGNMENT
Write an short essay about the extinction of
dinosaurs. Write 2 sentences about each of the
following words.
Volcanoes
Tsunamis
Earthquakes
Asteroid Impacts
Answer the question, “How is the extinction of
the dinosaurs similar to the extinction of
animals?”
Take your essay home and study with your

next
parents! You will have a short quiz next class!
