Definition of Juncture

Juncture is pause in utterance, but it is something more than merely a pause. It is accompanied by slowing the rate and changing the pitch of the voice immediately preceding the pause The transition or mode of transition from one sound to another in speech

 A pause in speech or a feature of pronunciation that introduces, accompanies, or replaces a pause

the set of phonological features signalling a division between words, such as those that distinguish a name from an aim

KINDS OF JUNCTURE
Plus Juncture ( + ) or sometimes called Internal Open Juncture Level juncture ( / ) or sometimes called Sustain Juncture or Single Bar Juncture Rising Juncture ( // ) or sometimes called Double Bar Juncture Rising Fall Juncture ( # ) or sometimes called Double Bar Cross Juncture

1. PLUS JUNCTURE | + |
o Plus Juncture : A kind of pause that helps distinguish between such similiar phoneme sequence. o Example : 1. New deal VS Nude eel /nju/ + /dl/ VS /njud/ + /il/ 2. A name VS An aim // + /nem/ VS /n/ + /em/

LEVEL JUNCTURE | / | :

o SINGLE BAR JUNCTURE | / | : This is a terminal juncture that is marked by a sustention of the voice. This pause determines a change in the sense or meaning of the expression. It is used in long sentences. Long sentences are broken up into rhythm units. A rhythm unit may end in a pause that is preceded by rising normal intonation.

3. Rising Juncture | // |
o It can be used in the mid of utterances and at the end of utterances. o This junctures mainly used in yes or no questions. o This is external junction that means A RISE IN PITCH, also called Double Bar Juncture.

4. Rising-falling Juncture ( # ) or Double Bar Cross Juncture

It is used at the end of utterances that terminate in rising-falling intonation, between sentence in a text and as fullstop. It indicates a fading away into silence. For example: This suitcase is awfully heavy. s + su:tkes + z + :fli + hevi ( # ) Lets go. lets + g ( # )
