Introduction About Juran

Joseph M. Juran was born in Brailia, Romania in December 24,1904. In 1924, Joseph graduated from the University of Minnesota with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. Emperor Hirohito recognized Jurans contribution to the development of Japans quality control and was honored with the highest award.

According to Juran
Juran defines quality as "fitness for use Juran goes on further to quantify "fitness for use" in two different categories : 1. Product features that meet customer needs 2. Freedom from deficiencies

Juran : Quality Trilogy

Managing for quality consists of three basic quality-oriented processes : Quality Planning, Quality Control, Quality Improvement.

Quality Trilogy
The role of quality planning is to design a process that will be able to meet established goals under operating conditions. The role of quality control is to operate and when necessary correct the process so that it performs with optimal effectiveness. The role of quality improvement is to devise ways to take the process to unprecedented levels of performance.

Juran Trilogy 1. Quality Planning

Quality planning stems from a unity of purpose that spans all functions of an organization.

The subject of planning can be anything.

Eg : An engineering process for designing new products, a production process for making goods, or a service process for responding to customer requests.

Quality Planning
Quality Planning involves :
Identifying customers, both internal and external Determining their needs Specifying the product features that satisfy those needs at minimum cost. Designing the processes that can reliably produce those features. Proving that the process can achieve its goals under operating conditions.

Juran Trilogy 2. Quality Control

The process of managing operations to meet quality goals. The process of Quality Control involves:
Choosing control subjects Choosing units of measurement Establishing a measurement procedure Measuring Interpreting differences between measurement and goal. Taking action to correct significant differences

Juran Trilogy 3. Quality Improvement

Assuming the process is under control, any waste that occurs must be inherent in the design of the process.
The object of quality improvement is to reduce chronic waste to a much lower level.

Ten Steps to Quality Improvement

1. Build Awareness of need and opportunity for improvement

2. Set goals for improvement

3. Organize to reach goals 4. Provide training 5. Carry out projects to solve problems

Ten Steps to Quality Improvement

6. Report Progress 7. Give Recognition 8. Communicate Results

9. Keep Score
10. Maintain Momentum by making annual improvement part of the regular systems and processes of the company

Examples
MOTOROLA -- (reduced defects in manufactured products)

SHELL -- (41% maintenance cost reduction)

DUPONT -- (reduced cost, increase sales and working capital; $175,000 pre-tax earnings) Government Agencies -- (e.g. U.S. Customs increased promptness of service for passengers moving through border crossings)

Conclusion
Joseph M. Juran has led a life of success and accomplishments. Using his intelligence and dedication Juran changed himself from a poor Romanian immigrant into a world renowned quality control expert. He has had a varied successful career as an engineer, as a writer, as an educator and as a consultant. Juran has been called the father of quality, a quality guru and the man who taught quality to the Japanese.
