How do networks work?

Lessons from network theory

You dont need to know everyone. Knowing who the connectors are is important Be aware of what networks you are in and what ones you are not in Being part of a network takes time and energy you cant be part of everything.

Why do researchers use social media?

I think social media made me a better researcher because I find stuff out a lot quicker. I now have a network of individuals I respect and am confident in their work. The network discovers and filters and discusses. I have connected my research to the real world in a way that would not have been so easy before and maybe not possible. For curriculum development and teaching this has connected with real issues that interest and engage students and has helped them become student researchers in their own right with a broader and more critical take on issues. In summary
Reputation you must be known.
iCeGS

Relationships you must know other people and build relationships with them. The online environment provides opportunities to do this in ways that can level the playing field.

Ideas are made of writing

We write our ideas into being. They only come to life and reveal their glory and their weakness. Rewriting is the essence of good writing. Feedback can motivate and direct our rewriting.

What is a blog?
Short for Web log, blogs are websites composed of serial short or medium-length entries. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order. Most blogs are interactive, allowing visitors to leave comments and even message each other via widgets on the blogs and it is this interactivity that distinguished them from other static websites. Blogs may be maintained by an individual or collaborating group.*

A blog is the centre of a network

A blog is a communication tool

How
Some blogging tools Posterous https://posterous.com/ Blogger http://www.blogger.com Wordpress http://wordpress.org/

Writing a blog
Decide what kind of blog you are writing Remember the perfect is the enemy of the good Social presence is important make it sound like a person is talking Write for participation. Encourage others to comment using questions and posts designed to provoke a reaction. Use materials/content that you generate for other purposes. e.g. post presentations. Dont be afraid to include short posts and links.

iCeGS

Getting people to read your blog

Keep writing. There are lots of blogs with only one post. Tell people what you are doing. Link it to other social media (twitter, facebook etc) Create some posts based on current events, celebrities etc Look at what posts are most popular and write more like that.

iCeGS

iCeGS: Creative Solutions for the Careers Sector www.derby.ac.uk/icegs

Most importantly why?

Creates a repository of your work/advice/stuff for you and your students/peers. Makes your resources available to other academics and builds your reputation. Extends your reach beyond those people you can physically see/meet. A vehicle for dissemination of your ideas? A tool for engaging students It is creative and fun.
