Company Profile

NTPC at Parvada Simhadri is the ambitious project of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) intended to provide the ever growing power needs of the state of Andhra Pradesh. With the completion of the project, the total power generation capacity of NTPC will reach to 3600 MW in Andhra Pradesh with NTPC Ramagundum already generating 2100 MW a day. after taking baby steps into power transmission and distribution in 2002, is making efforts to enter the retail distribution segment in a more aggressive manner, both in the national and international market.

The company, which has 500x4 MW units as part of Stage-I and II of the Rs.10,000-crore project, is set to overcome coal shortage with the State government agreeing to supply 7,000 tonnes per day in addition to the early availability of 3,500 tonnes from Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL). It is one of the prestigious Navratna companies and is also identified as Maharatna among the remaining Navratna companies.

At present the government holds 89.5 % of the total equity shares of the company and remaining by domestic banks, public and others.

Purpose of Project
To enhance the power generation capacities For further expansion purposes To avail benefits of the PARVADA zonewhich has led many pharma companies, industries and steel plant to choose this location Proximity to availability of resources

Location details of plant 3384 acres of land was allocated for the construction of the Thermal plant. The height of the Chimeny is 275-feet - a record in Asia for being the tallest factory chimeny. Near to this is the 165-meter two cooling towers.

From where does the plant obtain resources for operations?

NTPC Simhadri which signed an agreement with suppliers in Indonesia for purchase of coal to meet part of its requirement, will blend Indian and imported coal in the ratio of 80:20. NTPC Simhadri has signed agreement for purchasing 4.5 lakh tonne of low caloric coal from Indonesia for a period of three months.

Also Coal for the project will be coming to the plan with a special rail line setup for this. Coal will be drawn from the Mahanadi Coal Fields in Orissa drawing over 6 Million tonnes of coal every year

The water intake for the project for cooling is done by sea water drawn from 8.9 kms away from the Bay of Bengal through an intake-well sized 9100 cubic meters. This intake-well is again the biggest well constructed in the entire India. The project also gets Sweet water from the Yeluru canal.

The supply of electric products is also done by BHEL, which is a government owned company.

How is the power distributed?

The power generated at NTPC Simhadri will be bought by AP Transco - the power distribution arm of the Electricity Board in the state. The approximate selling price of power is expected to be at Rs. 2.10 as against to the price from private power generation companies which was at Rs. 3 - 4 per unit.

Environmental Impact
To save the environment from pollution, NTPC Simhadri has taken ample steps. Towards this is the project of planting trees and maintaining greenery around the site. The main by products released are ash Which must be handled with care.

The NTPC Simhadri Super Thermal Power Project has been presented the Safety Award-2007 of Indian Institution of Industrial Engineering, Visakhapatnam Chapter in recognition of its best practices in the field of safety management and accident prevention activities.
