Meeting 3 major global challenges

Three major global challenges

Energy Crisis (Oil = $80/barrel in midst of recession) Environmental crisis (IPCC: 25-40% reduction by 2020) Financial crisis
And a European challenge App. 350 GW of new electricity generating capacity must be constructed before 2020 (50% of current total)

2009 a turning point?

EU Directive for renewable energy sources

By 2020, 20 % of Europes energy will come from renewable sources Now in the process of implementation into 27 binding national targets Renewable electricity share increase from 15% to 34%

Wind Energy comes at the right time

Strong growth of wind energy sector 1992-2009. Annual growth rate of more than 25% to 155 GW globally (end 2009) Global market: 45 bn (of which EU: 13bn.) Wind energy is fully competitive with new conventional power technologies Cost of wind power can be predicted with great certainty Low-risk investment

IEA World Energy Outlook 2008

Electricity generating costs in the European Union, 2015 and 2030

Revised assumptions on fuel prices and power plant construction cost Expects new wind power to be cheaper than coal and gas in 2015 and 2030
