Background on Student

Student Z is in 5th grade at Hiawassee Elementary School.

(Name changed for confidentiality.)

Student Z is taught in an I.N.D. classroom. He has cognitive

delays that interferes with his ability to function academically on the same level as his peers.

Student Z enjoys video games, music by Bob Marley,

playing on the computer, and any conversation with staff or peers.

Student Z enjoys coming to school and showing off what he

knows.

How Cognitive Delays effects Student Zs Performance

Student Z requires constant supervision and

redirection to complete classroom assignments.

Need rewards to help keep him motivated to complete

tasks.
Has trouble with his memory which interferes with

his ability to remember blended letter sounds.

Goals and benchmarks

The student will manipulate individual phonemes to

create new words through addition, deletion, and substitution.

Identify and blend phonemes in selected VC and CVC

words.

Plan
To help student Z remember and correctly pronounce

CVC AND CC letter blends.

To generalize this ability during other activities and

lessons throughout the day.

To create opportunities for student Z to utilize his new

skills in real world situations.

Assess Student Progress

The student progress is monitored daily by teacher

supervision during class assignments and once a month through informal testing.
A informal test was created using an Apple iPad and app

called Bitsboard.
This test is completed without the teachers interference

and at the students comfortable pace.

Assessments

Assessments created with iPad App Bitsboard.

Progress
Student Z is very easy to work with. Has no severe

behaviors and is easy to redirect with off task.

Student Z focus is improving. He especially likes to read

the letter blend stories that I have created for him.

Student Zs memory of letter blend has improved

substantially since our fist lesson.

Student Z show interest in mastering his current goals.

What I Learned
I have learned that students are more likely to learn

when activities are enjoyable.

I have learned that students need opportunities to

watch someone model correct production of letter blends.

I have learned that when students have difficulty with

rough learning, It is best to create funny or lesson that connect with real world situations to help them learn and retain information.

Future Classroom
In my future classroom I will continue to create stories to help

student understand how to correctly blend letter sounds.

I will continue to use an iPad in my future classroom to assess

the students performance levels and progress to master goals.

I will always provide time so each student works one-on-one

with me, because I believe that most students learn better one-on-one.

I have learned that student performance (monthly informal

assessments) should drive my instruction for future lessons.

Conclusion
Never judge a book by its cover. Students may try to fake

their academic ability.

One-on-one instruction is vital for each student. Always leave room to be creative. Create informal test that are quick and accurate. Always utilize my current skills, passion, and creativity to

help students achieve.
