Modals (Obligation and Advice)


SHOULDused for suggestions: You should study. MUSTused for obligation (often internal): I must find a new apartment. HAVE TOused for obligation (often external, i.e. rules, etc.): You have to pay your fine. Not a true modal, has other forms. MUSTNTused to prohibit: You mustnt park here. (cant is also possible) DONT HAVE TOused to express something is not necessary: You dont have to bring food to the party. The action is still possible.

MUSTexpresses something the speaker believes to be true based on evidence SHOULDexpresses something the speaker believes is supposed to be true, but with an element of uncertainty MAY / MIGHTexpress something the speaker believes is possibly true CANTexpresses something the speaker believes is impossible

Modals (Ability and Possibility)


CANexpresses ability and possibility COULDexpresses remote ability and possibility BE ABLE TOexpresses ability and possibility, and is NOT A MODAL, so it can take any form.

TRUE MODALS HAVE NO PAST OR FUTURE TENSE!!!! This means should, must, can, could, may, and might cannot change forms. They can be used with a future meaning.
