Annual Professional Performance Review (APPR)

APPR aims to help our children.
Are the standards effective? How does the nurturing relationship between teacher and student change as a result of APPR? Have teachers become more focused on drill testing and narrowing their curriculum?

Unfunded Mandates
Unfunded mandates are pushing schools
districts to the brink of educational insolvency.
What state education mandates are the most expensive? What are the least useful?

The Common Core

The Common Core was designed to ensure
our children received a sound, equitable education.
What are the strengths and weaknesses? Are standards and assessments, rather than curriculum and instruction, driving The Common Core? Has the data been used as a strategy for improvement or for accountability purposes?

Other Topics
Would extending the length of the school
day help or hurt students and teachers? Are BOCES/Questar programs beneficial for students? Is there enough communication between high schools, higher education institutions and job creators regarding curriculum? Is mandated pre-kindergarten practical?

Our Discussion
Where do we go from here? What can New York and the state

education department do better to help our teachers and students?
