anyone lived in a pretty how town

Todays aims:
To get to grips with the most challenging of the poemsand to love it as much as I do! To think about how symbolism creates meaning in this poem and to what effect. To consider the ways in which cummings explores abstract ideas through language. To consider the ways in which language and standard grammatical rules may be manipulated whilst still making sense

After watching the films:

Discuss the visual images you noticed. What does each suggest? What symbolic associations do concrete nouns such as snow and industrial building acquire in these films? What mood is established in each film & how? What narrative can you identify?

NOW READ THE POEM IN YOUR GROUP

Which video seems to you to be the best fit for the poem and why?

Now create a group storyboard

Do this stanza by stanza. Do not agonise over art work! Single or quick images are fine with captions telling the story Please dont panic if you cant make sense of something! Focus on images/impressions and some kind of progression YOU HAVE 20 MINUTES THEN WE WILL SHARE AS A CLASS

INDIVIDUAL RESPONSE
Write a paragraph which explains how you respond to ee cummings style of poetry. CONSIDER: What do you think he was trying to achieve? Select at least one specific line/image or stanza from the poem to comment upon in support of your view.

Now for the nuts & bolts

Read the critical essays in your group and build detailed annotation of your copy of the poem through discussion. Which explanation of pretty how town do you prefer? (ie, is pretty used as an adjective or a degree modifier?) Look closely at the lines they sowed their isnt they reaped their same and he sang his didnt he danced his did Although they appear nonsensical, there is a difference in meaning and tone. Explore.

Comment on the lists in the poem Look carefully at the difference between stanzas 4 and 5. What difference is cummings implying between noones love for anyone and someones love for everyones? If more by more suggests great love growing ever greater (as opposed to the familiar expression little by little), what do you make of some of the other verbal patterns in 7th & 8th stanzas? What do you make of the metre and rhyme pattern of this poem? How should it be read? What is your final response to the poem? How does it fit with the HOME theme of this anthology?
