Sport marketing is in our everyday liveswe watch sporting events on TV and witness the efforts of sport marketers Topics to discuss: -what the job entails -how to get into the sport marketing business -show how sport marketing can be important to other professions

Investigate differences between sport marketing at university and professional levels Look at challenges that sport marketers face and how they overcome them Allow the target audience to decide whether sport marketing would be a good profession for them or if they could use strategies in their own professions

Sport marketing consists of all activities that are designed to meet the wants and needs of sport consumers. It can be divided up into two categories: the marketing of sport products and services directly to the consumer, and the marketing of other products or services via sport promotions (Mullin 2007, p. 11)

Conducted brief interview w/ Kalee Kopp (Sport Marketing Director at ISU)

Her duties include: promoting ISU athletics, finding

sponsors, branding the ISU Bengals as a product, writing PA announcements, and coordinating everything that goes on during a sporting event at ISU including in game promotions Raising money for the athletic dept. thru sponsorships and getting fans to attend gamesmost important aspects of her job

ISU isnt great sports school--Kalee has to come up with creative promotions to attract fans to games She also spends a lot of time coordinating w/sponsors to create promotions that meet their needs

Challenges: Coach Kramer incident coaches/players/teams attract negative attention to ISU

She has to do damage control and portray

athletics in positive way

Everything we see occur at the games outside of the game itself is the doing of KaleePA announcements, halftime shows, media timeouts, etc. There are always a million things going on at once that she is responsible forshe must rely on interns, athletic staff, and other organizations to help her out

Masters degree recommended Survey of 400 sports industry execs: 41% received traditional MBA while only 16% got a masters in a sport related field (Angst). Sport marketing companies want candidates with degree in law, business, marketing or advertising (Howe).

A lot easier to market big time teams than minor league teams or big teams with smaller fan bases. Ex: Miami Marlins had to cut payroll from $110mil to $40mil. No more star players on the teammarketers had to try to attract fans by offering buy one get one free tickets for opening day (Capozzi).

Hard for minor league teams to attract fans, so they often resort to crazy promotions. George Constanza night-everything in reverse 10-cent beer night Nobody Night-fans were locked out Used Car Night (Robeson)

Found a lot of information on sport marketing The interview I did with Kalee Kopp was very helpful in giving me a perspective on the ins and outs of sport marketing

Struggled to find articles about individual sport marketers, but did find a great deal of information on sport marketing in general

Professionals in any area of business can benefit from learning about sport marketing and perhaps even spending some time in the profession because it has a lot of similarities to fields in business such as advertising, sales, and even general marketing. Sport marketing covers many aspects of sports, not just promoting games or creating advertisements; it goes a lot deeper than that.

For someone thinking about entering the field of sport marketing, it will be important to do more extensive research on the topic. Also, it will be important to find out from potential employers what the job will entail. Some organizations definition of sport marketing will be quite different from others so it will be important to find out what you will be getting into before you accept any job offers or negotiate terms of a contract.
