WHAT IS AN ATM?
The Automated Teller Machine is a computerised

telecommunications device
that provides a financial institution with access to financial transactions in public space without the need of a cashier, human clerk or a bank teller.

THE FIRST ATM

Invented By American inventor Luther George Simjian in 1939.

City Bank of New York installs one of his ATMs for a six month trial.
At the end of the six month trial the ATM was removed as the customers were hesitating to believe this new technology.

THE SOFTWARE

ATMs use Microsoft OS - Windows XP


Professional or Windows XP Embedded.

Windows Vista wasnt that popular. Linux OS is gaining popularity.


A Wincor Nixdorf ATM running Windows 2000.

ATMs keep the PIN and other information safe by using


encryption software such as Triple DES (Data Encryption Standard).

An ATM running Microsoft Windows that has crashed

Even though the ATM has been a boon to us , it does have few disadvantages that include -

If someone forgets the pin number he or she will not be able to withdraw money from their account.

There is a daily cash withdrawal limit. Moreover small amount of money cannot be withdrawn.

Highly prone to card forgery and robbery.

Sometimes the money receipt after a transaction shows incorrect balance, leading to confusion.

To

help guard against fraud, keep your ATM receipts until you check them against your monthly statement.
When

selecting a PIN, avoid numbers and letters that relate to your personal information. For example, don't use your initials, birthday, telephone or vehicle number etc..

SAFETY TIPS FOR USE OF ATM CARD USEFUL TIPS: Protecting The Card :
Keep

your card in a safe place to avoid damage.

Memorize

your Personal Identification Number

(PIN).
Immediately

report a lost or stolen card to your financial institution.

SAFETY TIPS AT THE TIME OF WITHDRAWAL :

surroundings before using an ATM. Avoid using ATM with obstructed view
Take Have

a friend with - especially at night. the card out and ready to use.

Shield

the screen and keyboard so anyone waiting to use the ATM cannot see the PIN or transaction amount.
Put

your cash, card and receipt away immediately. Always keep your receipt.
When

using an enclosed ATM that requires your card to open the door, avoid letting strangers follow you inside.
Use

Your own Bank machine ,where ever possible .
