- (National Research Council 1975 cited in Phillips and Pitman (2009).

A combination of social units and systems which perform the major social functions and the organization of social activities - (Waren 1963 cited in Phillips and Pittman (2009)

institution, and activities, close living together on the basis of kinship and organic
interdependence, and common life based upon the mutual correspondence of interests. Basic factors of community - Social unity, physical unity, commonness and common possession Social interaction - developed from interpersonal discourse based on shared experience, which shape values and attitudes and create a group of people residing in close mutual proximity and who come to identify themselves as a social grouping.

LITERATURE
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT (UN)
Community development is a process during which people in the small community first thoroughly discuss and define their wants, and then plan and act together to satisfy them. Community development is the process by which the efforts of the people themselves are united with those of the government authorities to improve the economic, social and cultural conditions of the communities, to integrate communities into the life of the nation, and to enable them to contribute fully to the national progress. - (UN in Somashekharapa and Gurumurthy, 1993:51-52)

LITERATURE
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
Community building in all of these efforts consists of actions to strengthen the capacity of communities to identify priorities and opportunities and to foster and sustain positive neighborhood change - (Chaskin 2001 cited in Haines, 2009). Community development is defined as a planned effort to produce assets that increase the capacity of residents to improve their quality of life -(Green and Haines 2007 cited in Haines, 2009) Community development is asset building that improves the quality of life among residents of low to moderate income communities, where communities are defined as neighborhoods or multi-neighborhood areas - (Ferguson and Dickens 1999 cited in Haines, 2009). Community development is a place-based approach: it concentrates on creating assets that benefit people in poor neighborhoods, largely by building and tapping links to external resources - (Vidal and Keating 2004 cited in Haines, 2009)
